Electron spin polarization in the photoemission of NEA GaAs1?x P x

1982

Negative electron affinity GaAs1−xPx-photocathodes emit spin-polarized electrons if irradiated with circularly polarized light. The spectra of spin polarization of photoelectrons emitted from crystals with different phosphorus contentx resemble each other in shape but shift to shorter wavelengths with increasingx. Polarization values up to 40% are observed for electrons from crystals withx=0 andx=0.38. Cathodes with higher phosphorus contents increasing fromx=0.65 tox=0.87 and tox = 1.0 deliver photoelectrons with decreasing degrees of spin polarization of 17%, 15%, and 9%, respectively, at maximum.

Experimental observations of topologically guided water waves within non-hexagonal structures

International audience; We investigate symmetry-protected topological water waves within a strategically engineered square lattice system. Thus far, symmetry protected topological modes in hexagonal systems have primarily been studied in electromagnetism and acoustics, i.e., dispersionless media. Herein, we show experimentally how crucial geometrical properties of square structures allow for topological transport that is ordinarily forbidden within conventional hexagonal structures. Measurement of the Branching Fraction and Polarization for the DecayB−→D*0K*−

We present a study of the decay B- --> D*K-0*(-) based on a sample of 86 X 10(6) Y(4S) --> B (B) over bar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. We measure the branching fraction 23(B- --> D*K-0*(-)) = (8.3 +/- 1.1(stat) +/- 1.0(syst)) X 10(-4), and the fraction of longitudinal polarization in this decay to be Gamma(L)/Gamma = 0.86 +/- 0.06(stat) --> +/- 0.03(syst).

Evidence for Two-Nucleon Polarization in the π(h9/2i13/2)11- ν(j-2)0+ Level in 208Po

From in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements on the 208Pb(α, 4n)208Po reaction using the Stockholm 225-cm cyclotron, we have concluded that there is an 11-, 8 ns isomeric state in 208Po, which lies 1 175 keV above the π(h 9/2 2)8+ state and that this isomeric state should have the configuration π(h 9/2 i 13/2)11- ν(j -2)0+. Calculations based on the use of empirical two-particle interactions give a position of the 11- level which deviates by about + 100 keV from the experimentally found position. It is suggested that this deviation is mainly due to the difference in the polarization of the 206Pb-and 208Pb-cores by the two aligned h 9/2 and i 13/2 protons.

New method to observe gravitational waves emitted by core collapse supernovae

While gravitational waves have been detected from mergers of binary black holes and binary neutron stars, signals from core collapse supernovae, the most energetic explosions in the modern Universe, have not been detected yet. Here we present a new method to analyse the data of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA network to enhance the detection efficiency of this category of signals. The method takes advantage of a peculiarity of the gravitational wave signal emitted in the core collapse supernova and it is based on a classification procedure of the time-frequency images of the network data performed by a convolutional neural network trained to perform the task to recognize the signal. Dynamics of correlations due to a phase noisy laser

We analyze the dynamics of various kinds of correlations present between two initially entangled independent qubits, each one subject to a local phase noisy laser. We give explicit expressions of the relevant quantifiers of correlations for the general case of single-qubit unital evolution, which includes the case of a phase noisy laser. Although the light field is treated as classical, we find that this model can describe revivals of quantum correlations. A perfect Fresnel acoustic reflector implemented by a Fano-resonant metascreen

We propose a perfectly reflecting acoustic metasurface which is designed by replacing the curved segments of the traditional Fresnel reflector by flat Fano-resonant sub-wavelength unit cells. To preserve the original Fresnel focusing mechanism, the unit cell phase follows a specific phase profile which is obtained by applying the generalized Snell's law and Fermat's principle. The reflected curved phase fronts are thus created at the air-metasurface boundary by tailoring the metasurface dispersion as dictated by Huygens' principle. The wave propagation in helium II bounded by two plane-parallel plates forming a narrow channel is considered. The theory is based on the complete linearized set of the Khalatnikov equations. These equations are exactly averaged over the width of the channel taking into account the boundary conditions and symmetry relations. It is shown that in narrow channels three solutions of these equations exist; (a) fourth sound, (b) the so-called fifth-wave mode, and (c) another wave mode, which is very strongly damped. Structural components with waveguide geometry can be probed using guided elastic waves. Analytical solutions are prohibitive in complex geometries, especially in presence of structural discontinuities or defects. The Global-Local (GL) approach provides the solution by splitting the waveguide in “local” and “global” regions. Optimal adiabatic passage by shaped pulses: Efficiency and robustness

We explore the efficiency and robustness of population transfer in two-state systems by adiabatic passage (i) when the driving pulse is optimally designed in order to lead to parallel adiabatic passage or (ii) with a linear chirping. We show how one could practically implement the corresponding designs of the pulses in the spectral domain. We analyze the robustness of the two shapings taking into account fluctuations of the phase, amplitude, and the area of the pulse.
