Tight Link Between Our Sense of Limb Ownership and Self-Awareness of Actions

2007

Background and Purpose— Hemiparetic stroke patients with disturbed awareness for their motor weakness (anosognosia for hemiparesis/-plegia [AHP]) may exhibit further abnormal attitudes toward or perceptions of the affected limb(s). The present study investigated the clinical relationship and the anatomy of such abnormal attitudes and AHP. Methods— In a new series of 79 consecutively admitted acute stroke patients with right brain damage and hemiparesis/ -plegia, different types of abnormal attitudes toward the hemiparetic/plegic limb (asomatognosia, somatoparaphrenia, anosodiaphoria, misoplegia, personification, kinaesthetic hallucinations, supernumerary phantom limb) were investigated. Electoral Rules and Proportionality in Spain: Estimating the Impact of some Swedish Rules Through the 2011 Electoral Data

2016

In democratic countries policy making is always framed by many procedures and rules. Some of these rules are particularly critical for allowing more or less proportionality in legislative chambers, though the behavior of political actors also matter. The rules used for technically converting votes into political representatives often exercise such an important role in western countries. In this chapter we provide an estimation of the impact upon proportionality between seats and votes that might have resulted in the 2011 Spanish general elections if some Swedish electoral rules had been applied, ceteris paribus. As we are aware that electoral reforms favouring proportionality may hinder the…

Comprehensive Experimental Analysis of Handcrafted Descriptors for Face Recognition

2018

Over the past few decades, LBP descriptor, which shown its high robustness in extracting discriminative features from an image, has been successfully applied in diverse challenging computer vision applications including face recognition. The efficiency and usability of the LBP operator and its success in various real world applications has inspired the development of much new powerful LBP variants. Indeed, after the appearance of the LBP operator, several renowned extensions and modifications of LBP have been proposed in the literature to the point that it can be difficult to recognize their respective LBP-related strategies, strengths and weaknesses according to a given application, and th…

Multicriteria performance analysis of an integrated urban wastewater system for energy management

2017

AbstractThe optimization and management of an integrated urban wastewater system is a complex problem involving many processes and variables. The possible control options are defined by several management strategies that may differently impact the economic, operational or environmental performance of the system. The present paper aims to contribute to the environmental and energy sustainability of urban wastewater systems by means of a multicriteria performance analysis. The paper begins with a complete analysis of the system performance in several fields of interest (energy, environment, quality of service, operation, economy and financial resources), and it highlights the management stren…

I´m tired of being tired - Fatigue as experienced by women with fibromyalgia

2011

AbstractThe aim of the study was to explore how fatigue was experienced and explained in life stories of women with a long history of fibromyalgia to gain a deeper understanding of fatigue as a phenomenon. The data was drawn from the narrative interviews of 20 purposively chosen women with fibromyalgia. In the analysis, the ideas of episodic reading and paradigmatic analysis of narratives were used to find recurrent and repeated experiences of fatigue from the data. Five main themes emerged from the data: sleepless nights, physical weakness, loss of mental energy, social withdrawal and overwhelming exhaustion. The narratives indicated that in fibromyalgia, fatigue is a transient, extreme an…

Facial masks in children: the position statement of the Italian pediatric society

2020

AbstractFacial masks may be one of the most cost-effective strategies to prevent the diffusion of COVID 19 infection. Nevertheless, fake news are spreading, alerting parents on dangerous side effects in children, such as hypercapnia, hypoxia, gut dysbiosis and immune system weakness. Aim of the Italian Pediatric Society statement is to face misconception towards the use of face masks and to spread scientific trustable information.

Neuromuscular and Chest Wall Diseases in Pregnancy

2009

Patients with severe respiratory muscle impairment, in particular when vital capa-city is below 60% of the predicted normal values, are often discouraged frombecoming pregnant for fear of respiratory complications and the need for tra-cheostomy and invasive mechanical ventilation (1). A growing fetus can impairthe functioning of weak diaphragms resulting in lower vital capacity and respira-tory reserve and impair cough function. In addition, there is increased oxygenconsumption and ventilation requirement. Complications in pregnancy and theneed for analgesics and anesthesia during labor and delivery can also cause orexacerbate ventilatory failure.Neuromuscular DiseasesNeuromuscular diseases…

Depressed mood and body mass index as predictors of muscle strength decline in old men

2000

OBJECTIVE: To study depressed mood as a predictor of strength decline within body weight categories over a 3-year follow-up period. DESIGN: A prospective cohort study over 3 years. SETTING: Honolulu, Hawaii. PARTICIPANTS: The subjects were 2275 men participating in the Honolulu Heart Program with an average age of 77.1 years (range 71–92 years), who were not cognitively impaired at baseline (Exam 4), and who participated in maximal hand grip strength measurements at baseline and 3 years later (Exam 5). MEASUREMENTS: Hand grip strength was measured using a dynamometer. Depressive symptoms were studied using an 11-item version of Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale with 9 as a c…

Community-based oral health promotion practices targeted at children and adolescents in Finland--developing an assessment tool.

2013

Objectives To develop an assessment tool for evaluating oral health promotion practices and to evaluate community-based oral health promotion practices targeted at children and adolescents with this tool. Methods A theoretical framework about health promotion planning, implementation and evaluation was made on the basis of a literature review. Then, information about Finnish community-based oral health promotion practices (n = 12) targeted at children and adolescents was collected using semi-structured interviews. Also, related documents, for example action plans and reports, were collected when available. Next, an assessment tool based on the theoretical framework was developed, and the re…

Clinical spectrum of BICD2 mutations.

2020

Background and purpose Mutations in the BICD2 gene cause autosomal dominant lower extremity-predominant spinal muscular atrophy 2A (SMALED2A), a condition that is associated with a specific pattern of thigh and calf muscle involvement when studied by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Patients may present minor clinical sensory impairment, but objective sensory involvement has yet to be demonstrated. Methods We collected clinical data from 11 patients from five different families carrying mutations in BICD2. Genetic diagnosis was achieved using gene panel testing and skin biopsies were taken from two patients to study the epidermal nerve fiber density. Results In the studied patients, three …
