Power monitoring in dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides

We report on propagating mode power monitoring in dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs) by measuring the resistance of gold stripes supporting the DLSPPW mode propagation. Inevitable absorption of the DLSPPW mode in metal causes an increase in the stripe temperature and, thereby, in its resistance whose variations are monitored with an external Wheatstone bridge being accurately balanced in the absence of radiation in a waveguide. Gluten Degrading Enzymes for Treatment of Celiac Disease

Celiac disease (CeD) affects about 1% of most world populations. It presents a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from minor symptoms to mild or severe malabsorption, and it may be associated with a wide variety of autoimmune diseases. CeD is triggered and maintained by the ingestion of gluten proteins from wheat and related grains. Gluten peptides that resist gastrointestinal digestion are antigenically presented to gluten specific T cells in the intestinal mucosa via HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8, the necessary genetic predisposition for CeD. Dear Editor, We enjoyed reading the article by Fritscher-Ravens et al who showed, by confocal endomicroscopy, that candidate food antigens caused immediate duodenal mucosa damage in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients with a prolonged clinical history of symptoms after meals. Their in vivo data add evidence to the relationship between IBS and food allergy and seem to reinforce our hypothesis that a percentage of “nonceliac wheat sensitive” (NCWS) -patients with an IBS-like clinical presentation could suffer from non-immunoglobulin E-mediated wheat allergy. Non-celiac wheat sensitivity as an allergic condition: personal experience and narrative review.

Non-celiac wheat sensitivity (NCWS) is a newly described clinical entity characterized by symptoms, which can involve the gastrointestinal tract, the nervous system, the skin, and other organs. There is little data on the pathogenesis of NCWS and it is probable that different pathogenic mechanisms are involved in the different clinical manifestations of the disease. Thermal Decomposition and Combustion of Microwave Pre-Treated Biomass Pellets

The objective of the study was to investigate a more effective use of commercially available biomass pellets (wheat straw, wood, peat) using microwave pretreatment to improve heat production. Pellets were pretreated using the originally designed microwave torrefaction device. The effects of microwave (mw) pretreatment were quantified, providing measurements of the weight loss and elemental composition of pellets and estimating the effect of mw pretreatment on their porosity, surface area and calorific values at pretreatment temperatures of T = 448–553 K. Climate, soil physical–chemical characteristics, land management, and carbon (C) input from crop residues greatly affect soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration. According to the concept of SOC saturation, the ability of SOC to increase with C input decreases as SOC increases and approaches a SOC saturation level.
