Procoagulant activity during viral infections.

2017

The abundance of evidence suggest that inflammation of immune and non-immune cells may lead to an imbalance of the pro- and anti-coagulant state during viral infections. During systemic infections, the endothelium plays a critical role in regulating hemostasis, and severe imbalances of endothelial function and activation can contribute to organ failure. Viral infections may elevate plasma levels of procoagulant markers such as TAT and D-dimer TF-positive MPs as well as von Willebrand factor (vWF). Although multiple clinical studies are showing the association of viral infection and increased prothrombotic risk, the pathological mechanisms have not been fully identified for most viral infect…

Evolution of the Human chromosome 7: new information from the mapping of William-Breuren locus on non human primates chromosomes.

2004

Human chromosome 7 (HSA7) derives, by a pericentric inversion and a paracentric inversion, from an ancestral chromosome homologous to chromosome 10 of Pongo pygmaeus (the Asiatic Orang-Utan). Nevertheless the genesis of this autosome during primates evolution is not clear. Even if chromosome painting shows that HAS 7 synteny is highly conserved, GTG-banding comparison in Hominoidea and Cercopithecoidea indicates the probable occurrence of complex rearrangements during the evolution. In this study we used a single locus FISH approach, a powerful tool to detect fine rearrangements, in order to investigate the evolution of HAS 7. We report the chromosome mapping of Williams-Beuren syndrome loc…

Così vicina così lontana, New Graphic Design in Cina

2009

Evaluation of Clotting Factor Concentrates for Treatment of Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura.

2010

Abstract Abstract 3678 Introduction: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is characterized by microthrombi, hemolytic anemia as well as thrombocytopenia. These symptoms are caused by a decreased activity of the protease ADAMTS13 which cleaves the von Willebrand Factor (VWF), due to mutation of the ADAMTS13-gene or autoantibodies. At the moment, the only available immediate therapy is plasmapheresis with Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) which may induce side effects. Therefore an alternative therapy might be the treatment with clotting factor concentrates. Methods: 40 plasma samples were tested, consisting of FFP and solvent/detergent treated plasma, four batches of each blood group; VWF/VIII …

AGI and Machine Consciousness

2012

This review discusses some of main issues to be addressed to design a conscious AGI agent: the agent’s sense of the body, the interaction with the environment, the agent’s sense of time, the free will of the agent, the capability for the agent to have some form of experience, and finally the relationship between consciousness and creativity.

Identifying the Luxury Sustainability Paradox: Three Steps Toward a Solution

2017

In this chapter, we argue about a paradox of sustainability in the context of luxury goods and brands: Intuitively, luxury brands should be more sustainable versus normal brands, since consumer’s willingness to pay is high which should allow for highest standards in quality, including sustainability. However, many of the most expensive luxury products appear to exhibit limited sustainability. Examples include sports cars that typically are gas guzzlers, yachts that often carry only a few people but require a high amount of resources to be operated, or fur products that require animals to give their lives for. For example, the Hermes Birkin bag recently received a lot of negative media due t…
