Communication apprehension, self-perceived communication competence, and willingness to communication in Singapore

2016

Based in the assertion that different cultures value aspects of communication differently, this study explored the position of Singapore on the continuum of communication apprehension (CA), self-perceived communication competence (SPCC), and willingness to communicate (WTC). Responses were obtained from 209 self-identified ethnic-Chinese born in Singapore and 105 Malay immigrants. The results revealed ethnic-Chinese to have low self-reported CA, while Malays had high CA in comparison to regional neighbors. Malays and ethnic-Chinese both had low WTC and low SPCC levels in comparison to regional neighbors. The findings show a potential “immigrant effect,” as Malay immigrants had much higher C…

The Dunkl–Williams constant, convexity, smoothness and normal structure

2008

Abstract In this paper we exhibit some connections between the Dunkl–Williams constant and some other well-known constants and notions. We establish bounds for the Dunkl–Williams constant that explain and quantify a characterization of uniformly nonsquare Banach spaces in terms of the Dunkl–Williams constant given by M. Baronti and P.L. Papini. We also study the relationship between Dunkl–Williams constant, the fixed point property for nonexpansive mappings and normal structure.

The organizational use of online stock photos: The impact of representing senior citizens as eternally youthful

2018

The digital divide due to age is declining quickly. But this does not necessarily mean that the willingness to use stock photos depicting older people accompanying digital information is the same among all senior citizens. Three research questions are at the core of this paper: (1) To which extent can various senior citizens (women and men, younger old and older old, living alone or together, full of vitality or fragile) identify with online stock photos of older people accompanying information about pensions, income, health and housing?, (2) Which are the connotations of the visual signs used in such stock photos? and (3) What are the policy implications for organizations aiming at offerin…

Umowa czy harmonia społeczna

2017

There are some well-known critiques of social contract undertaken from the traditionalist, communitarian and Marxist perspectives. This article suggests a different, rationalist approach: the return to classical rationality. I show that the idea of the social contract has its basis in the mistaken modern assertions concerning human nature, identifying human beings as individuals moved by desires and the will to power, and the phenomenon of life as an endless conflict. I argue that cooperation is essential to human life. It is cooperation and the presence of ethics in the public and private spheres that makes us fully human and civilized beings. The community organized according to the requi…

The limits of subtractive politics: Agamben and Rousseau’s inheritance

2020

The article critically engages with Giorgio Agamben’s reading of Rousseau in order to explore the affinities between the two authors’ subtractive approach to political subjectivation. In The Kingdom and the Glory. Agamben argues that Rousseau’s Social Contract reproduces, in a secularized manner, the providential paradigm of government, whose origins Agamben finds in early Christianity. This paradigm establishes a fictitious articulation between transcendent sovereignty and immanent government, presenting particular acts of government as emanating from general divine laws. We shall demonstrate that Rousseau was neither unaware of the problematic character of this paradigm nor did he venture…

Selfless or Selfish? The Impact of Message Framing and Egoistic Motivation on Narcissists’ Compliance with Preventive Health Behaviors during COVID-19

2021

COVID-19 is one of the greatest international health crises in recent years. Due to the highly contagious nature of the virus, the World Health Organization has recommended that people comply with a set of preventive measures to reduce the infection rate (e.g., social distancing, wearing a face mask, thorough personal hygiene). However, people typically differ in the extent to which they are willing to comply with such recommendations, as they imply certain personal restrictions. The present study aimed to investigate whether narcissism levels and message framing strategies affect individuals’ willingness to accept personal restrictions and, consequently, comply with a set of preventive hea…

This paper explores how …

Fast-growing willow (Salix viminalis) as a filler in polyethylene composites

2018

Abstract The study investigated the possibility of using wood flour obtained from fast-growing willow chips (Salix viminalis) as an alternative for standard hard- and softwood flours used in the production of wood polymer composites (WPCs). The composites contained willow flour and polyethylene matrix (OPCs) were prepared, characterized and compared with other WPCs which had been filled with hard- or softwood flours. Moreover, the structural and functional properties were investigated and discussed. Greater hemicellulose contents and lower lignin contents in OPCs resulted in better impact strength values of those materials. Which is interesting, the chemical composition of OPCs was found si…

Ziemie Prus w trakcie polskiej wojny sukcesyjnej i wojny siedmioletniej

2021
