Respiratory mechanics measured by forced oscillations during mechanical ventilation through a tracheal tube

The forced oscillation technique (FOT) allows the measurement of respiratory mechanics in the intensive care setting. The aim of this study was to compare the FOT with a reference method during mechanical ventilation through a tracheal tube. The respiratory impedance spectra were measured by FOT in nine anaesthetized pigs, and resistance and compliance were estimated on the basis of a linear resistance-compliance inertance model. In comparison, resistance and compliance were quantified by the multiple linear regression analysis (LSF) of conventional ventilator waveforms to the equation of motion. Evaluation of different mechanical fruit harvesting systems and oil quality in very large size olive trees

In 2006 and 2009, trials were carried out in the Apulia region in Southern Italy to evalu-ate the possibility of mechanizing olive harvesting in groves of old and very large trees. The trees belonged to the cultivars ‘Cellina di Nardò’ and ‘Ogliarola Salentina’. They were 60-100 years old and 7-9 m tall with a canopy volume of 140-360 m3. Diffusion of oxygen in cork.

International audience; This work reports measurements of effective oxygen diffusion coefficient in raw cork. Kinetics of oxygen transfer through cork is studied at 298 K thanks to a homemade manometric device composed of two gas compartments separated by a cork wafer sample. The first compartment contains oxygen, whereas the second one is kept under dynamic vacuum. The pressure decrease in the first compartment is recorded as a function of time. The effective diffusion coefficient D-eff is obtained by applying Fick's law to transient state using a numerical method based on finite differences. Soil erosion assessment on tillage and alternative soil managements in a Sicilian vineyard

Mediterranean crops favour high erosion rates. Vineyards use to reach the highest soil and water losses due to the lack of vegetation cover. A topographical approach by means of the use of vineyards poles as fixed reference point as erosion markers allowed to quantify high and non-sustainable soil erosion rates on the Sicilian vineyards during 9 years. Alkaloids Isolated from Somatic Hybrid Cell Cultures of the Species CombinationRauwolfia serpentinaxrhazya stricta

Abstract The phytochemical analyses of a somatic hybrid cell suspension culture of the genus and species combination Rauwolfia serpentina x Rhazya stricta revealed a number of monoterpenoid indole alkaloids. The alkaloids were identified as tubotaiwine, an isomeric mixture of vallesiachotamine, stemmadenine and vomilenine and were all produced in small amounts < 2mg/litre cell suspension. The hybrid cells showed a greater diversity of alkaloid biosynthesis when compared with the parental cultures.
