Esophageal Biomechanics Revisited: A Tale of Tenacity, Anastomoses, and Suture Bite Lengths in Swine

2019

Background Anastomotic tension has repeatedly been associated with anastomotic leakages after esophagectomy for cancer or esophageal atresia repair. We therefore aimed to determine which anastomotic technique would come as close as possible to the native esophagus in sustaining traction forces. Constant traction for several minutes at esophageal remnants and large suture bites are also considered relevant in long-gap esophageal atresia repair. Methods Porcine esophagi were subjected to linear traction using a motorized horizontal test stand. We compared breaking strengths of native esophagi to simple continuous, simple interrupted, stapled, and barbed suture anastomoses. We also investigate…

Laser Welding - Suitable for Vascular Anastomosis?

1994

Carotid arteries of 21 piglets were transsected and reanastomosed either by laser welding (Neodym:YAG laser) or by conventional suture anastomosis. Histological specimens of the anastomoses obtained 2 to 32 days after the operation showed less foreign body reaction and intimal hyperplasia after laser welding than after suturing. There was, however, no significant difference when comparing occurrence of thrombosis, patency rate, or growth of the anastomosis in growing animals. Neither our study nor a review of the literature of laser-assisted vascular anastomosis in microvessels and large arteries up to 5 mm diameter could establish a definite clinical application for laser welding in vascul…

Initial topical cooling followed by backtable Celsior flush perfusion provides excellent early graft function in porcine single lung transplantation …

2013

Topical in situ cooling of the donor lungs is a prerequisite for procurement of non-heart-beating donor lungs and may be of interest for living related lung donation.Twenty-four single lung transplants were performed in 4 groups of Landrace pigs (6 per group). Control LPD, control Celsior and topical cooling in situ, followed by LPD (exLPD) or Celsior (exCel) ex situ flush, were employed. All lungs were perfused antegrade with 1 liter of solution at 4°C. Lungs were stored immersed in preservation solution for 24 hours at 4°C. After transplantation of the left lung, the right recipient bronchus and pulmonary artery were clamped.Four of 6 animals each in the LPD and Celsior groups and all 6 a…

Assessment of a Modified Acoustic Lens for Electromagnetic Shock Wave Lithotripters in a Swine Model

2013

The acoustic lens of the Modularis electromagnetic shock wave lithotripter (Siemens, Malvern, Pennsylvania) was modified to produce a pressure waveform and focal zone more closely resembling that of the original HM3 device (Dornier Medtech, Wessling, Germany). We assessed the newly designed acoustic lens in vivo in an animal model.Stone fragmentation and tissue injury produced by the original and modified lenses of the Modularis lithotripter were evaluated in a swine model under equivalent acoustic pulse energy (about 45 mJ) at 1 Hz pulse repetition frequency. Stone fragmentation was determined by the weight percent of stone fragments less than 2 mm. To assess tissue injury, shock wave trea…

Effects of Plant Density on the Number of Glandular Trichomes and on Yield and Quality of Essential Oils from Oregano.

2016

Plants yields are influenced by agronomic techniques. Plant density is a complex issue and extremely important when maximizing both crop quality, and biomass and essential oil yields. Plants belonging to the Origanum vulgare subspecies hirtum (Link) Ietswaart were grown adopting four types of plant density and were characterized in biometric and chemical terms. The samples were analyzed using the ANOVA (Principal Component Analysis) statistical method regarding biometric aspects, EO yield and peltate hair density. Essential oil (EO) was extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed using GC-FID and GC-MS. GC-FID and GC-MS analysis led to the identification of 45 compounds from the EO. Plant …

Pressurized liquid extraction combined with capillary electrophoresis–mass spectrometry as an improved methodology for the determination of sulfonami…

2007

A new analytical method, based on capillary electrophoresis and tandem mass spectrometry (CE-MS2), is proposed and validated for the identification and simultaneous quantification of 12 sulfonamides (SAs) in pork meat. The studied SAs include sulfathiazole, sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxypyridazine, sulfaguanidine, sulfanilamide, sulfadimethoxyne, sulfapyridine, sulfachloropyridazine, sulfisoxazole, sulfasalazine, sulfabenzamide and sulfadimidine. Different parameters (i.e. separation buffer, sheath liquid, electrospray conditions) were optimized to obtain an adequate CE separation and high MS sensitivity. MS2 experiments using an ion trap as analyzer, operating in the selected reaction monitori…

Evaluation of cut quality using the Amadeus microkeratome with different settings.

2004

Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the quality of keratectomy specimens created with the Amadeus® microkeratome (AMO) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Setting: Johannes Gutenberg-University Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Mainz, and the Department of Anatomy, Justus Liebig-University, Giessen, Germany. Methods: Corneal cuts were performed in freshly enucleated pig eyes using the Amadeus microkeratome with 9 combinations of oscillation rate and head-advance speed. For the cutting trials, oscillation rates of 8000, 13000, and 18000 rpm and head-advance speeds of 1.0, 2.5, and 4.0 mm/s were chosen. Fifty-four eyes were included, resulting in 9 groups of 6 eyes for each configuration…

A fact-finding investigation on Sicilian wine firms attitude towards third party voluntary certifications: motivations and alternative impact assessm…

2015

In the last few decades an increasing emphasis of public and private organization on quality and safety control, on traceability of food products and on environmental issues, has been registered. Mandatory public standards and private voluntary today drive this process in order to assure food safety and traceability standards. The aim of this work is to analyze the main reasons that drives some Sicilian wineries in the adoption of quality voluntary standards, and comparing their economic attitudes and performance with those firms not certified. Results show a very similar performance patterns among the two groups of firms, highlighting a series of differences that are not directly attributa…

THE PREMIUM PRICE FOR ITALIAN RED WINE QUALITY ATTRIBUTES IN THE JAPANESE MARKET

2015

In this paper we apply the hedonic price model in order to estimate implicit price for the main objective characteristics appearing on the label of Italian wines sold in Japan, easier to identify than sensory attributes by consumers. In this paper, the wine searcher dataset has been used in order to select the retailer price and the research score for 829 wines, for each of which we have observed information about their geographical origin, vintage, grape varieties, vintage, and the alcohol degree. Our results indicate that international grape varieties, alcohol content and the year of production explain the major part of price difference. On the other hand, the origin appellations linked t…
