Unitary Space–Time Constellation Design Based on the Chernoff Bound of the Pairwise Error Probability

2008

Unitary space-time constellation design is considered for noncoherent multiple-antenna communications, where neither the transmitter nor the receiver knows the fading coefficients of the channel. By employing the Clarke's subdifferential theorem of the sum of the kappa largest singular values of a unitary matrix, we present a numerical optimization procedure for finding unitary space-time signal constellations of any dimension. The Chernoff bound of the pairwise error probability is used directly as a design criterion. The constellations are found by performing gradient descent search on a family ldquosurrogaterdquo functions that converge to the maximum pairwise error probability. The comp…

Fronts propagating with signal dependent speed in limited diffusion and related Hamilton-Jacobi formulations

2021

We consider a class of limited diffusion equations and explore the formation of diffusion fronts as the result of a combination of diffusive and hyperbolic transport. We analyze a new class of Hamilton-Jacobi equations arising from the convective part of general Fokker-Planck equations ruled by a non-negative diffusion coefficient that depends on the unknown and on the gradient of the unknown. We explore the main features of the solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations that contain shocks and propose a suitable numerical scheme that approximates the solution in a consistent way with respect to the solution of the associated Fokker-Planck equation. We analyze three model problems covering d…

Convergence for varying measures

2023

Some limit theorems of the type $\int_{\Omega}f_n dm_n -- --> \int_{\Omega}f dm$ are presented for scalar, (vector), (multi)-valued sequences of m_n-integrable functions f_n. The convergences obtained, in the vector and multivalued settings, are in the weak or in the strong sense.

Polish highlander jokes and their targets

2017

The aim of the paper is to identify the characteristic features of jokes about Polish highlanders and analyse them to isolate the comic script of a highlander. This group of jokes is treated as a good illustration of Christie Davies’s ethnic jokes theory concerning canny versus stupid and centre versus periphery oppositions, as well as mind over matter. A particular type of reasoning and the use of regional dialect are distinctive features of the joke targets that make it possible to perceive these jokes as a culturally specific phenomenon. The head shepherd (called baca) is the key character of the cycle. He is a very down-to-earth person, who is proud of his practical wisdom and has a ver…

Limits of Sobolev homeomorphisms

2017

Let X; Y subset of R-2 be topologically equivalent bounded Lipschitz domains. We prove that weak and strong limits of homeomorphisms h: X (onto)-> Y in the Sobolev space W-1,W-p (X, R-2), p >= 2; are the same. As an application, we establish the existence of 2D-traction free minimal deformations for fairly general energy integrals. Peer reviewed

Impact of structural features of odorant molecules on their retention/release behaviours in dairy and pectin gels

2014

International audience; Reducing of fat content in food requires a reformulation that may cause a different perception of aroma. Maintaining an adequate level of acceptability of these reformulated products for consumers requires a better understanding of the mechanisms that control the retention of odorant molecules in food matrices. Although pectins are commonly employed as thickeners, their effect on the retention of odorant molecules in nonhomogeneous products has been examined more frequently than their effect on the retention of odorant molecules in simple gels models. The purpose of this study was to explore and compare the respective effects of pectin in simple model systems. The rel…

Computing Sum of Products about the Mean with Pairwise Algorithms

1997

We discuss pairwise algorithms, a kind of computational algorithm which can be useful in dynamically updating statistics as new samples of data are collected. Since test data are usually collected through time as individual data sets, these algorithms would be profitably used in computer programs to treat this situation. Pair-wise algorithms are presented for calculating the sum of products of deviations about the mean for adding a sample of data (or removing one) to the whole data set.

Diffusion stabilizes cavity solitons in bidirectional lasers

2009

We study the influence of field diffusion on the spatial localized structures (cavity solitons) recently predicted in bidirectional lasers. We find twofold positive role of the diffusion: 1) it increases the stability range of the individual (isolated) solitons; 2) it reduces the long-range interaction between the cavity solitons. Latter allows the independent manipulation (writing and erasing) of individual cavity solitons.

Path-wise versus kinetic modeling for equilibrating non-Langevin jump-type processes

2014

We discuss two independent methods of solution of a master equation whose biased jump transition rates account for long jumps of L\'{e}vy-stable type and nonetheless admit a Boltzmannian (thermal) equilibrium to arise in the large time asymptotics of a probability density function $\rho (x,t)$. Our main goal is to demonstrate a compatibility of a {\it direct} solution method (an explicit, albeit numerically assisted, integration of the master equation) with an {\it indirect} path-wise procedure, recently proposed in [Physica {\bf A 392}, 3485, (2013)] as a valid tool for a dynamical analysis of non-Langevin jump-type processes. The path-wise method heavily relies on an accumulation of large…
