Making structured and reliable decisions on relevant business problems often requires expert assistance. In decision making practice, experts are frequently required to pairwise compare elements to support the decision made. This paper proposes a user-friendly negotiation procedure to establish an effective feedback relation with experts to globally increase the consistency of their pairwise comparisons judgments, where necessary. To this aim, we develop a flexible tool, which makes use of an algebraic consistency-improving algorithm and a sensitivity analysis technique to identify which judgments contribute most to inconsistency. Pathogenetic and diagnostic significance of microRNA deregulation in peripheral T-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas not otherwise specified (PTCLs/NOS) are rare and aggressive tumours whose molecular pathogenesis and diagnosis are still challenging. The microRNA (miRNA) profile of 23 PTCLs/NOS was generated and compared with that of normal T-lymphocytes (CD4+, CD8+, naive, activated). The differentially expressed miRNA signature was compared with the gene expression profile (GEP) of the same neoplasms. The obtained gene patterns were tested in an independent cohort of PTCLs/NOS. Varietal and geographic classification of french red wines in terms of pigments and flavonoid compounds

Thirty-four French red wines originating from six different grape varieties and three different production areas were analysed in duplicate for 15 anthocyanins, ten flavonoids and three colour parameters, F-statistics, principal component analysis and stepwise discriminant analysis were used to identify and to explain differences among samples. Clear difference between wines made from different varieties were mainly related to anthocyanin 3-acylglucosides. Stochastic resonance in a trapping overdamped monostable system.

The response of a trapping overdamped monostable system to a harmonic perturbation is analyzed, in the context of stochastic resonance phenomenon. We consider the dynamics of a Brownian particle moving in a piecewise linear potential with a white Gaussian noise source. Based on linear-response theory and Laplace transform technique, analytical expressions of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and signal power amplification (SPA) are obtained. We find that the SNR is a nonmonotonic function of the noise intensity, while the SPA is monotonic. Theoretical results are compared with numerical simulations.

Efficient finite-difference scheme for solving some heat transfer problems with convection in multilayer media

Abstract An efficient finite-difference method for solving the heat transfer equation with piecewise discontinuous coefficients in a multilayer domain is developed. The method may be considered as a generalization of the finite-volumes method for the layered systems. We apply this method with the aim to reduce the 3D or 2D problem to the corresponding series of 2D or 1D problems. In the case of constant piecewise coefficients, we obtain the exact discrete approximation of the steady-state 1D boundary-value problem.
On the properties of the radiosity equation near corners

The radiosity equation is an integral equation of the second kind which describes the energy exchange by radiation between surfaces in R3. It is assumed that all surfaces are Lambertian reflectors and that all emitters are diffusive emitters. The radiosity equation plays an important role for the calculation of photo realistic images with the help of computers. Many surfaces which are used in practical calculations are only piecewise smooth and contain edges or corners. Measuring Dissimilarity Between Curves by Means of Their Granulometric Size Distributions

The choice of a dissimilarity measure between curves is a key point for clustering functional data. Functions are usually pointwise compared and, in many situations, this approach is not appropriate. Mathematical Morphology provides us with a toolbox to overcome this problem. We propose some dissimilarity measures based on morphological granulometries and their performance is evaluated on some functional datasets.

For a bounded simply connected domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^2$, any point $z\in\Omega$ and any $0<\alpha<1$, we give a lower bound for the $\alpha$-dimensional Hausdorff content of the set of points in the boundary of $\Omega$ which can be joined to $z$ by a John curve with a suitable John constant depending only on $\alpha$, in terms of the distance of $z$ to $\partial\Omega$. In fact this set in the boundary contains the intersection $\partial\Omega_z\cap\partial\Omega$ of the boundary of a John sub-domain $\Omega_z$ of $\Omega$, centered at $z$, with the boundary of $\Omega$.
