Mappings of Finite Distortion : Compactness of the Branch Set

We show that an entire branched cover of finite distortion cannot have a compact branch set if its distortion satisfies a certain asymptotic growth condition. We furthermore show that this bound is strict by constructing an entire, continuous, open and discrete mapping of finite distortion which is piecewise smooth, has a branch set homeomorphic to an (n - 2)-dimensional torus and distortion arbitrarily close to the asymptotic bound. A comparison of two indirect methods for estimating average levels of gene flow using microsatellite data.

We compare the performance of Nm estimates based on FST and RST obtained from microsatellite data using simulations of the stepwise mutation model with range constraints in allele size classes. The results of the simulations suggest that the use of microsatellite loci can lead to serious overestimations of Nm, particularly when population sizes are large (N5000) and range constraints are high (K20). The simulations also indicate that, when population sizes are small (N/= 500) and migration rates are moderate (Nm approximately 2), violations to the assumption used to derive the Nm estimators lead to biased results. International audience; Polydisperse sedimentation models can be described by a strongly coupled system of conservation laws for the concentration of each species of solids. Typical solutions for the sedimentation model considered for batch settling in a column include stationary kinematic shocks separating layers of sediment of different composition. Psychosocial impact of malocclusion in Spanish adolescents

Objective: To evaluate the psychosocial impact of malocclusion, determine its relationship with the severity of malocclusion, and assess the influence of gender and social class on this relationship in adolescents. Methods: A random sample of 627 Spanish adolescents aged 12 - 15 years underwent intraoral examinations by 3 calibrated examiners (intraexaminer and interexaminer kappa > 0.85) at their schools. Psychosocial impact was measured through a self-rated Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ). A nonlinear algorithm for monotone piecewise bicubic interpolation

We present an algorithm for monotone interpolation on a rectangular mesh.We use the sufficient conditions for monotonicity of Carlton and Fritsch.We use nonlinear techniques to approximate the partial derivatives at the grid points.We develop piecewise bicubic Hermite interpolants with these approximations.We present some numerical examples where we compare different results. In this paper we present an algorithm for monotone interpolation of monotone data on a rectangular mesh by piecewise bicubic functions. The finite element method approach is used to obtain formulations of analysis problems relative to elastic-plastic structures when subjected to prescribed programmes of loads, and under the restrictive hypotheses:a) the yielding surfaces are piecewise linearized, andb) the plastic flow-laws are supposed to be of holonomic type within a single “finite” time interval. Testing Prospect Theory in a Deterministic Multiple Criteria Decision-Making Environment

Prospect theory by Kahneman and Tversky [7] is tested in a deterministic multiple criteria decision-making context. In two experiments conducted in classroom settings subjects made pairwise preference comparisons of condominiums for sale. The results of the experiments indicate that the traditional value model did not explain the subjects' revealed preferences as well as the prospect model. We conclude that prospect theory is a reasonable model of choice for many individuals in such a context.
