Sequencing of mtDNA is an advanced method for the individualisation of traces. Disadvantages of this method are expensive and time-consuming analysis and evaluation procedures as well as the necessary stock of population-genetic data which is still insufficient. Central European institutes of forensic medicine from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland have been working together since the beginning of 1998 to establish a mtDNA database. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is a widely-used method for multicriteria decision support based on the hierarchical decomposition of objectives, evaluation of preferences through pairwise comparisons, and a subsequent aggregation into global evaluations. The current paper integrates the AHP with stochastic multicriteria acceptability analysis (SMAA), an inverse-preference method, to allow the pairwise comparisons to be uncertain. A simulation experiment is used to assess how the consistency of judgements and the ability of the SMAA-AHP model to discern the best alternative deteriorates as uncertainty increases. On the surface of water ice, a quasi-liquid layer (QLL) has been extensively reported at temperatures below its bulk melting point at 273 K. Approaching the bulk melting temperature from below, the thickness of the QLL is known to increase. To elucidate the precise temperature variation of the QLL, and its nature, we investigate the surface melting of hexagonal ice by combining noncontact, surface-specific vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy and spectra calculated from molecular dynamics simulations. Quasi-sinusoidal oscillations in negative resistance devices with piece-wise analytical characteristics

The second-order approximated solution of a negative resistance oscillator whose active device has a piece-wise analytical characteristic is presented. The frequency and the harmonic content of the oscillation waveform are obtained as functions of the circuit parameters and of the device bias.
Data Compression with ENO Schemes: A Case Study

Abstract We study the compresion properties of ENO-type nonlinear multiresolution transformations on digital images. Specific error control algorithms are used to ensure a prescribed accuracy. The numerical results reveal that these methods strongly outperform the more classical wavelet decompositions in the case of piecewise smooth geometric images.
Signal Denoising with Harten’s Multiresolution Using Interpolation and Least Squares Fitting

Harten’s multiresolution has been successfully applied to the signal compression using interpolatory reconstructions with nonlinear techniques. Here we study the applicability of these techniques to remove noise to piecewise smooth signals. We use two reconstruction types: interpolatory and least squares, and we introduce ENO and SR nonlinear techniques. The standard methods adaptation to noisy signals and the comparative of the different schemes are the subject of this paper.
Edge detection insensitive to changes of illumination in the image

In this paper we present new edge detection algorithms which are motivated by recent developments on edge-adapted reconstruction techniques [F. Arandiga, A. Cohen, R. Donat, N. Dyn, B. Matei, Approximation of piecewise smooth functions and images by edge-adapted (ENO-EA) nonlinear multiresolution techniques, Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 24 (2) (2008) 225-250]. They are based on comparing local quantities rather than on filtering and thresholding. This comparison process is invariant under certain transformations that model light changes in the image, hence we obtain edge detection algorithms which are insensitive to changes in illumination.
Identification of minor affective disorders and implications for psychopharmacotherapy.

Five hundred general practice patients with functional complaints were studied with the Polydiagnostic Interview (PODI) to see whether DSM-IIIR criteria were able to specify affective disorders satisfactorily. Almost one third of the patients received the diagnosis of depression not otherwise specified (NOS). When Research Diagnostic Criteria were applied to these patients more than 70% received specific diagnoses. A modification of DSM-IIIR algorithms enabled us to further specify diagnoses in subjects with depression NOS. On the 17-item Hamilton Depression Scale many of these patients reached scores of 13 or more which is severe enough to justify a therapy trial with antidepressants.
