Dimensional analysis and upscaling of two-phase flow in porous media with piecewise constant heterogeneities

2004

Dimensional analysis of the traditional equations of motion for two-phase flow in porous media allows to quantify the influence of heterogeneities. The heterogeneities are represented by position dependent capillary entry pressures and position dependent permeabilities. Dimensionless groups quantifying the influence of random heterogeneities are identified. For the case of heterogeneities with piecewise constant constitutive parameters (e.g., permeabilities, capillary pressures) we find that the upscaling ratio defined as the ratio of system size and the scale at which the constitutive parameters are known has to be smaller than the fluctuation strength of the heterogeneities defined, e.g.,…

Exploiting seeding of random number generators for efficient domain decomposition parallelization of dissipative particle dynamics

2013

Abstract Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) is a new promising method commonly used in coarse-grained simulations of soft matter and biomolecular systems at constant temperature. The DPD thermostat involves the evaluation of stochastic or random forces between pairs of neighboring particles in every time step. In a parallel computing environment, the transfer of these forces from node to node can be very time consuming. In this paper we describe the implementation of a seeded random number generator with three input seeds at each step which enables the complete generation of the pairwise stochastic forces in parallel DPD simulations with minimal communication between nodes.

Understanding the mechanism of the Povarov reaction. A DFT study

2014

The molecular mechanism of the Povarov reaction in acetonitrile has been studied at the MPWB1K/6-311G** level of theory. This reaction follows a domino process that comprises two sequential reactions: (i) a Lewis acid catalysed aza-Diels–Alder (A-DA) reaction between a N-aryl imine and a nucleophilic ethylene yielding a formal [4 + 2] cycloadduct; (ii) a stepwise 1,3-hydrogen shift at this intermediate affording the final tetrahydroquinoline. At this computational level, the Lewis acid catalysed A-DA reaction presents a two-step mechanism as a consequence of the large stabilisation of the corresponding zwitterionic intermediate. Our study allows establishing that the N-aryl substituent has …

Determination of Phenols from Automobile Exhaust by Means of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)

1981

Abstract The paper describes a procedure to determine ten representative phenols (phenol, m-, p-, o-cresol, 2,4-, 2,6-, 3,4-, 3,5-xylenol, 2,3,6-, 2,4,6-trimethylphenol) in engine exhaust. Sampling was performed by a conventional Grimmer device. A sample of the water condensate collected was extracted with ether. After concentration of the ether extract phenols were isolated from other interfering compounds by stepwise elution on a Lobar column packed with LiChroprep Si 60 under controlled conditions. Relative recovery of the majority of reference phenols ranged from 90-100%. Separation of phenols into individual components was performed on polar packings as well as on Reverse Phase packing…

Finite groups which are products of pairwise totally permutable subgroups

1998

Finite groups which are products of pairwise totally permutable subgroups are studied in this paper. The -residual, -projectors and -normalizers in such groups are obtained from the corresponding subgroups of the factor subgroups under suitable hypotheses.

The Bourgain property and convex hulls

2007

Let (Ω, Σ, μ) be a complete probability space and let X be a Banach space. We consider the following problem: Given a function f: Ω X for which there is a norming set B ⊂ BX * such that Zf,B = {x * ○ f: x * ∈ B } is uniformly integrable and has the Bourgain property, does it follow that f is Birkhoff integrable? It turns out that this question is equivalent to the following one: Given a pointwise bounded family ℋ ⊂ ℝΩ with the Bourgain property, does its convex hull co(ℋ) have the Bourgain property? With the help of an example of D. H. Fremlin, we make clear that both questions have negative answer in general. We prove that a function f: Ω X is scalarly measurable provided that there is a n…

A model for multilayered beams undergoing end loads

2013

A formulation for layered beams undergoing end loads, namely axial, shear and bending actions, is developed and presented in this paper. A layer-wise kinematical model is first derived so that the point-wise balance relationships are fulfilled at the layer level. Successively, by enforcing the interface continuity conditions and taking the traction–free conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the laminate into account, the layer-wise kinematical quantities are written in terms of generalized kinematical variables representative of the beam displacements field. The beam problem is then formulated in terms of these generalized variables leading to a model that shows the positive characte…

A Theory of Laminated Beams Subjected to Axial, Bending and Shear Load

2013

A theory of laminated beams subjected to axial, bending and shear loads is presented in this paper. The kinematical model employed to describe the laminated beam displacement field is layer-wise in nature. Moreover it is such that the equilibrium equations and the continuity of the stress components at plies interfaces are satisfied. By using the whole set of interface continuity conditions in conjunction with the traction –free conditions on the beam top and bottom surfaces the layer-wise kinematical quantities are written in terms of the mechanical primary variables pertaining to one layer only, which are then expressed in terms of the laminated generalized displacements. The solution for…

Approximation of piecewise smooth functions and images by edge-adapted (ENO-EA) nonlinear multiresolution techniques

2008

Abstract This paper introduces and analyzes new approximation procedures for bivariate functions. These procedures are based on an edge-adapted nonlinear reconstruction technique which is an intrinsically two-dimensional extension of the essentially non-oscillatory and subcell resolution techniques introduced in the one-dimensional setting by Harten and Osher. Edge-adapted reconstructions are tailored to piecewise smooth functions with geometrically smooth edge discontinuities, and are therefore attractive for applications such as image compression and shock computations. The local approximation order is investigated both in L p and in the Hausdorff distance between graphs. In particular, i…

Ranking-Oriented Collaborative Filtering: A Listwise Approach

2016

Collaborative filtering (CF) is one of the most effective techniques in recommender systems, which can be either rating oriented or ranking oriented. Ranking-oriented CF algorithms demonstrated significant performance gains in terms of ranking accuracy, being able to estimate a precise preference ranking of items for each user rather than the absolute ratings (as rating-oriented CF algorithms do). Conventional memory-based ranking-oriented CF can be referred to as pairwise algorithms. They represent each user as a set of preferences on each pair of items for similarity calculations and predictions. In this study, we propose ListCF, a novel listwise CF paradigm that seeks improvement in bot…
