Performance of QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus for detection of latent tuberculosis infection in pregnant women living in a tuberculosis- and HIV-endemic se…
2017
We evaluated the performance of QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus (QFT-Plus), which includes two Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigen formulations (TB1 and TB2), for detection of latent tuberculosis infection during pregnancy. Eight-hundred-twenty-nine Ethiopian pregnant women (5.9% HIV-positive) were tested with QFT-Plus, with bacteriological sputum analysis performed for women with clinically suspected tuberculosis and HIV-positive women irrespective of clinical presentation. QFT-Plus read-out was categorized according to the conventional cut-off (0.35 IU/ml) for both antigen formulations. In addition, we analysed the distribution of QFT-Plus results within a borderline zone (0.20–0.70 IU/ml), and i…

Guinea is one of the West African countries where fertility is still high and declining little, with a worrying health situation (maternal and infant mortality levels among the highest in the world). The level of demographic growth (2.5% per year on average) associated with the low level of socioeconomic development of the country seems difficult to reconcile with the satisfaction of the objectives of sustainable development and thus makes the control of fertility a major challenge.Despite the political will displayed since the early 1980s, the adoption of a national population policy declaration in 1992 and a reproductive health policy in 2001 and the Government's efforts to promote Family…
From sin to the civil order, unions outside of marriage under the law (XVI-XX century)
2011
The aim of this thesis is to understand the legal status of unmarried couples, over a period of time extending for nearly five centuries. The canon law of marriage relegated cohabitation to a permanent state of sin, and in the sixteenth century, the council of Trent prescribed severe penalties to punish cohabitation. The fathers of the council enacted rules governing the celebration of marriage. Secular authority then gradually arrogated jurisdiction in matrimonial matters by means of laws and jurisprudence. The line between marriage and cohabitation was now strictly drawn. Although the old law did not consider cohabitation as a crime, it castigated children born outside of wedlock by subje…
La strage delle donne nell'opera: complicità e denuncia della rappresentazione
2016
The massacre of women, always present in the opera from its origin, is especially spread in the nineteenth century and has its popular specimen in La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi; it doesn’t disappear in the musical theatre of the twentieth century which indeed started with the death on stage of a female figure, mysterious and unconventional, the Mélisande by Maetherlimk and Debussy, killed by the common destiny for all women. Purpose of this paper is to show how the music in the theatre plays a different role which depends on different compositional modes in similar dramatic events and so it is able to give different sense to similar episodes of violence against women. Transgressive linguist…
Bernardine Evaristo’s The Emperor’s Babe: Re-Narrating Roman Britannia; De-Essentializing British National Identity
2014
The essay aims to demonstrate that, by representing the Black group as integral to British history, Bernardine Evaristo's The Emperor’s Babe imaginatively intervenes into the contemporary transmission of European history by unseating the conventional notion of racial purity on which the Western historical archive has been built. The novel thus questions hegemonic notions of Britishness and simultaneously re-inscribes them by offering new inclusive configurations of the British identity. Evaristo’s complex articulation of inter- and intra-gender power relations prevents the novel from developing the ethnic motif in simplistic celebratory terms and simultaneously enables the narrative to intr…

Laura Bianchini. Dall'associazionismo cattolico all'impegno in politica
2022
Laura Bianchini (1903 - 1983) was among those women who first crossed the threshold of the "palaces" of politics. Mildred Pierce e i margini della crisi
2013
Quality of life following urinary diversion: Orthotopic ileal neobladder versus ileal conduit. A multicentre study among long-term, female bladder ca…
2019
Abstract Introduction Women undergoing radical cystectomy (RC) followed by urinary diversion (UD) for bladder cancer experience a substantial reduction in health-related quality of life (HRQOL). At present, studies comparing long-term QOL outcomes for different UD methods, needed to inform evidence-based choices of bladder reconstruction for female patients, are sparse. Our objective was to compare two common UD methods in terms of their HRQOL outcomes in women. Materials and methods We retrospectively analysed HRQOL in 73 consecutive female bladder cancer patients having undergone orthotopic ileal neobladder (IONB, N = 24) or ileal conduit (IC, N = 49) following RC between 2007 and 2013 in…
