Camouflage in arid environments: the case of Sahara-Sahel desert rodents

Deserts and semi-deserts, such as the Sahara-Sahel region in North Africa, are exposed environments with restricted vegetation coverage. Due to limited physical surface structures, these open areas provide a promising ecosystem to understand selection for crypsis. Here, we review knowledge on camouflage adaptation in the Sahara-Sahel rodent community, which represents one of the best documented cases of phenotype-environment convergence comprising a marked taxonomic diversity. Through their evolutionary history, several rodent species from the Sahara-Sahel have repeatedly evolved an accurate background matching against visually-guided predators. Artikkelissani tarkastelen Suomi24-keskustelupalstan homouteen ja heterouteen liittyviä toistuvia diskursseja. Analyysi on toteutettu korpusavusteisena diskurssintutkimuksena (CADS), jossa suureen dataan perustuva tilastollinen avainsana-analyysi nostaa esiin suomalaisen yhteiskunnan sosiaalisesti jaetut diskurssit. Tulokset yhtäältä tukevat aiempia media-analyyseissä tehtyjä havaintoja voimakkaista affekteista ja vihapuheesta sekä homoseksuaalisuuden politisoitumisesta ja uskonnollistumisesta. Investigating the effectiveness of a digital game-based task on the acquisition of word knowledge

This study investigates the probable effect of a digital game-based vocabulary learning (DGBVL) task on the acquisition of some components of a word knowledge framework. In so doing, 124 Persian speakers (56 males and 68 females) were randomly assigned to either a control or an experimental group. School bullying is associated with externalizing and internalizing problems, but little is known about whether reading difficulties also play a part. We asked how, in Grades 1 and 2, word reading skills and externalizing/internalizing problems predict the degree to which students are involved in bullying in Grade 3. Using a sample of 480 Finnish children (M age = 7 years 2 months at the beginning of the study), developmental profiles were identified using mixture modeling based on reading skills, as well as externalizing and internalizing problems. Celem artykułu jest językoznawcza refleksja nad słowem kuriozum. Autorka artykułu nie tylko pokazuje w nim historię słowa w polszczyźnie, ale przede wszystkim rekonstruuje (na podstawie funkcjonujących w języku synonimów wyrazu kuriozum oraz licznych przykładów jego użycia) strukturę semantyczną słowa. Zwraca uwagę na jego niezwykłe bogactwo znaczeniowe, wielość semantycznych odcieni, a także różnorodność wyrażanych nim emocji. Równocześnie pokazuje, że zawarte we współczesnych słownikach języka polskiego definicje słownikowe kuriozum (będące punktem wyjścia poczynionych analiz) nie oddają w pełni semantycznej złożoności słowa.
