Cross-national and longitudinal investigation of a short measure of workaholism

2015

The present study investigated the factor structure of the 10-item version of the Dutch Work Addiction Scale (DUWAS). The DUWAS-10 is intended to measure workaholism with two correlated factors: working excessively (WE) and working compulsively (WC). The factor structure of the DUWAS-10 was examined among multi-occupational samples from the Netherlands (n=9,010) and Finland (n=4,567) using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). CFAs revealed that the expected correlated two-factor solution showed satisfactory fit to the data. However, a second-order factor solution, where WE comprised the first-order factors “working frantically” and “working long hours”, and WC the first-order factors “obsess…

The relation between workload and personal well-being among university professors

2019

The aim of the present study was to explore the level of perceived workload of university professors and to evaluate related psychosocial risks, such as addiction to work, psychological distress, and work–life conflicts. A total of 252 professors, balanced for gender (Mean age = 48.1; DS: 5.1) from 10 different universities across Europe participated in the research. Participants completed the University’s Work Environment Survey, the Dutch Workaholism Scale, and The General Health Questionnaire. The results showed that workload, when linked to bureaucratic university practices, is a predisposing factor to a negative perception of work-related well-being among university professors.

2013

The aims of this two-year follow-up study among Finnish managers (n = 463) were twofold: first, to investigate the relation between work engagement and workaholism by utilizing both variable- and person-centered approaches and second, to explore whether and how experiences of work engagement and workaholism relate to job change during the study period. The variable-centered analysis based on Structural Equation Modelling revealed that the latent factors of work engagement and workaholism did not correlate with each other, thereby suggesting that they are independent constructs. The person-centered inspection with Growth Mixture Modelling indicated four work engagement-workaholism classes: 1…

Engaged managers are not workaholics: Evidence from a longitudinal personcentered analysis

2013

Distinguishing Workaholism and Work Engagement through Work–Life Conflict

2018

Workaholism and work engagement are described respectively as addiction to work and passion for work, leading to significantly different outcomes in employees’ life. Nevertheless, since they seem to share some features, a useful distinction could be reached by focusing on work–life balance levels of workaholics and engaged workers. The study was carried out by assessing levels of workaholism, work engagement and work–life conflict (work-to-life and life-to-work conflict) of 212 subjects, who completed a questionnaire. Data were analyzed through correlational strategy and structural equation modeling method. As hypothesized, workaholism and work–life conflict showed a positive relationship, …

Academic Workload, Well-Being and Workaholism in Italian Universities

2017

As suggested by Romainville (1996), universities are the only organizations focussed on dual core functions of knowledge creation and knowledge transmission through the processes of research and teaching. University academic staff do complex work in an increasingly demanding environment, so the workaholism risk seems to be higher than in other professions. Although this type of work behavior seems to be culturally approved by the academic community, it constitutes an element of risk for the health and well being of those who have chosen this type of profession on the basis of different expectations, especially in pace, amount, and independence at work. A very interesting line of research (w…

Investing in and recovering from work: effects on employees’ health through workaholism and work engagement

2019

Purpose: Workaholism and work engagement are two forms of heavy work investment, involving different consequences on employees’ life. Nevertheless, research has highlighted an overlapping zone between workaholism and work engagement, due to confounding findings about their relation and features they seem to have in common. Recovery––the process that allows employees to replenish individual resources after an effort––could be a critical construct in order to distinguish workaholic and engaged workers. This study aims therefore to consider the capacity to recover as influencing variable on workaholism and work engagement, respectively, and, further, it aims to observe what they, in turn, enta…

Can Psychological Detachment, Emotions, and Health Make the Difference between Workaholism and Work Engagement?

2018

Overlapping aspects between work addiction and work engagement make difficult distinguish the pathological forms of heavy work investment. Since workaholism and work engagement are responsible of different consequences on individual well-being, a source of distinction is searched among their relationships with affect, perceived health, and psychological detachment from work. Data were collected from 265 employees, through the administration of an online questionnaire containing scales of workaholism, work engagement, psychological detachment from work, positive and negative affect, and general health. Correlational analysis and structural equation modeling were conducted in order to study t…
