AbstractThis chapter aims to increase current understanding of adults’ individual learning pathways and needs when adapting to new technology. We review adults’ overall technology skills and depict, through chosen examples, how adults have adapted to technological change in their working lives. We present prior research on the challenges that the Fourth Industrial Revolution poses to adults’ further education, and based on the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), we review adults’ problem-solving skills in technology-rich environments. GPRS Security for Smart Meters

Part 1: Cross-Domain Conference and Workshop on Multidisciplinary Research and Practice for Information Systems (CD-ARES 2013); International audience; Many Smart Grid installations rely on General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) for wireless communication in Advanced Metering Infrastructures (AMI). In this paper we describe security functions available in GPRS, explaining authentication and encryption options, and evaluate how suitable it is for use in a Smart Grid environment. We conclude that suitability of GPRS depends on the chosen authentication and encryption functions, and on selecting a reliable and trustworthy mobile network operator.

The problem of achieving competitive game play in a board game, against an intelligent opponent, is a well-known and studied field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This area of research has seen major breakthroughs in recent years, particularly in the game of Go. Darba mērķis ir salīdzināt Gaskelas romānus „Mērija Bārtone” un „Ziemeļi un dienvidi” ar teorētisko informāciju par Viktorijas laika sociālajām problēmam un industrializācijas procesu 19. gadsimtā Lielbritānijā. Salīdzinājums ir veikts, lai atklātu kādas sociālas problēmas ir attēlotas romānos, un cik precīzi Gaskelas atainojums atbilst 19. gadsimta situācijai Lielbritānijā. Pētījumu metodes ir: vēsturiska un salīdzinoša analīze, teksta analīze. Pētījuma rezultāti atklāja, ka Gaskela attēloja dažādas sociālas problēmas kuras ir saistītas ar 19. gadsimta industrializāciju Lielbritānijā.

Education and working life: VET adults' problem-solving skills in technology-rich environments

The rapidly-advancing technological landscape in the European workplace is challenging adults' problem-solving skills. Workers with vocational education and training need flexible abilities to solve problems in technology-rich work settings. This study builds on Finnish PIAAC data to understand adults' (N?=?4503) skills for solving problems in technology-rich environments. The results indicate the critical issue that more than two thirds of adults with vocational education and training have weak skills or lack the skills in solving problems in technology-rich environments and that more than one fifth of these adults are at risk. In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling shiftable loads, over multiple users, in smart electrical grids. We approach the problem, which is becoming increasingly pertinent in our present energy-thirsty society, using a novel distributed game-theoretic framework.
