Leader election and local identifiers for three‐dimensional programmable matter

2020

International audience; In this paper, we present two deterministic leader election algorithms for programmable matter on the face-centered cubic grid. The face-centered cubic grid is a 3-dimensional 12-regular infinite grid that represents an optimal way to pack spheres (i.e., spherical particles or modules in the context of the programmable matter) in the 3-dimensional space. While the first leader election algorithm requires a strong hypothesis about the initial configuration of the particles and no hypothesis on the system configurations that the particles are forming, the second one requires fewer hypothesis about the initial configuration of the particles but does not work for all pos…

Dynamic Ordering of Firewall Rules Using a Novel Swapping Window-based Paradigm

2016

Designing and implementing efficient firewall strategies in the age of the Internet of Things (IoT) is far from trivial. This is because, as time proceeds, an increasing number of devices will be connected, accessed and controlled on the Internet. Additionally, an ever-increasingly amount of sensitive information will be stored on various networks. A good and effi- cient firewall strategy will attempt to secure this information, and to also manage the large amount of inevitable network traffic that these devices create. The goal of this paper is to propose a framework for designing optimized firewalls for the IoT. This paper deals with two fundamental challenges/problems encountered in such…

Stochastic discretized learning-based weak estimation: a novel estimation method for non-stationary environments

2016

The task of designing estimators that are able to track time-varying distributions has found promising applications in many real-life problems.Existing approaches resort to sliding windows that track changes by discarding old observations. In this paper, we report a novel estimator referred to as the Stochastic Discretized Weak Estimator (SDWE), that is based on the principles of discretized Learning Automata (LA). In brief, the estimator is able to estimate the parameters of a time varying binomial distribution using finite memory. The estimator tracks changes in the distribution by operating a controlled random walk in a discretized probability space. The steps of the estimator are discre…

Distributed learning automata for solving a classification task

2016

In this paper, we propose a novel classifier in two-dimensional feature spaces based on the theory of Learning Automata (LA). The essence of our scheme is to search for a separator in the feature space by imposing a LA based random walk in a grid system. To each node in the gird we attach an LA, whose actions are the choice of the edges forming the separator. The walk is self-enclosing, i.e, a new random walk is started whenever the walker returns to starting node forming a closed classification path yielding a many edged polygon. In our approach, the different LA attached at the different nodes search for a polygon that best encircles and separates each class. Based on the obtained polygon…

A Survey on Sensors for Autonomous Systems

2020

This paper presents a survey on state-of-the-art sensors for autonomous systems. The key performance parameters along with the operating principle of sensors used in autonomous systems are thoroughly explored. Practical aspects such as performance parameters, sensor output data format, sensor interfaces, size, power consumption, compatible hardware platforms, data analysis, and signal processing complexities are summarized. Such information serves as a practical guide for designing smart sensing systems for autonomous systems.

Design and manufacturing feasibility of ITER TBM Frame and Dummy TBMs

2016

Abstract The operation and test of mock-ups of tritium breeding blankets relevant for a future commercial reactor is one of the goals of the ITER machine. To accomplish this goal, mock-ups of breeding blankets, called Test Blanket Modules (TBMs), are installed in three ITER equatorial ports. Each TBM and the associated shield form a TBM-set that is mechanically attached to a steel frame called TBM Frame. A Frame and two TBM-Sets form a TBM Port Plug (TBM PP). The ITER Organization is responsible for the design and manufacture of the TBM Frames and of the Dummy TBMs that could replace the TBM-sets in case they were not available. This paper describes the recent results of the design supporti…

Development of a low-cost IoT system to detect and locate lightning strikes

2020

Lightnings are violent natural phenomena and can generate many expenditures, specially when they strike in urban areas. The identification of the concrete geographic area where they strike is of critical importance for emergency services in order to enhance their effectiveness by doing an intensive coverage of the affected area. To achieve this aim, this paper proposes a design, prototype and validation of a distributed network of Internet of Things (IoT) devices to enable detection and location of lightning strikes. The IoT devices are empowered with lightning detection capabilities and are synchronized with the other devices in the sensor network. All of them cooperate within a network th…

Dynamic Computation Offloading Scheme for Fog Computing System with Energy Harvesting Devices

2020

Fog computing is considered as a promising technology to meet the ever-increasing computation requests from a wide variety of mobile applications. By offloading the computation-intensive requests to the fog node or the central cloud, the performance of the applications, such as energy consumption and delay, are able to be significantly enhanced. Meanwhile, utilizing the recent advances of social network and energy harvesting techniques, the system performance could be further improved. In this paper, we take the social relationships of the energy harvesting MDs into the design of computational offloading scheme in fog computing. With the objective to minimize the social group execution cost…

Robust control of a Hammerstein model of DC/DC converters

2007

This paper deals with the robust control of a Hammerstein mathematical model of DC/DC converters, consisting of the nonlinear static characteristics of the converter followed by one of a few number of linear time- invariant models which describe the converter in the useful working range. One of these models is assumed as the nominal model of the system and the remaining models are used for describing the model uncertainty. Nominal behaviour is assured using H-2 optimal control method, Robust stability and behaviour are assured by imposing H-infin specifications. The closed loop control system consisting of the converter Hammerstein model and the robust controller is analyzed by means of sim…

Listening to Voices and Judging People

2010

The impact of vocal cues on personality judgments is investigated in an experimental study that used technically manipulated levels of pitch (low and high frequency), sex of the speaker, and content area (e.g., fixing a bike, baking, reading directory information) as independent and the entailing personality judgments as dependent variables. Subjects (48 male and 48 female) were presented with voice probes and ratings of physical (age, sex, height, stature), and psychological characteristics (bipolar adjectives representing the “Big Five” dimensions of personality) were collected. Results confirm that voice characteristics have an impact on interpersonal perception and that vocal cues are p…
