An experimental testbed of an Internet of Underwater Things

A number of critical features have so far slowed down the realization of an Internet of Underwater Things. The most relevant of these aspects are related to the unreliability of the communication channel, the long propagation delay and the effect of severe multi-path and fading. This paper presents the design and development of a hybrid underwater-terrestrial IoT where different underwater sensors collect heterogeneous data and use marine acoustic modems to send information to a gateway device; this is able to set up a long distance link, implemented through a LoRaWAN connection, to forward data to a remote cloud for further processing. Design of a narrow-band filter based on the Brewster phenomenon for microwave applications

A high-efficiency narrow-band filter based on a Dielectric Frequency-Selective Surface (DFSS) has been predicted theoretically for oblique plane-wave incidence. A DFSS showing total reflection at a frequency of 10.5 GHz, based on the Brewster phenomenon for TM polarization, has been designed with a single dielectric grating, showing extremely low-reflectance sidebands adjacent to the resonance peak. The angular and spectral response of the designed filter has been studied. In addition, dielectric ohmic losses have been accounted for in this structure. Personality traits and unemployment: Evidence from longitudinal data

2012

This study contributes to the literature on how personality is related to labour market success by providing evidence on the relationship between personality traits and unemployment. After accounting for reverse causality and measurement error, our results suggest that higher openness was associated with increased cumulative unemployment at the prime working age. It seems that this connection occurs because individuals with higher openness enter into unemployment spells more frequently – not because their unemployment spells would be particularly long. peerReviewed

A macro-modelling approach for the analysis of infilled frame structures considering the effects of openings and vertical loads

During the last decades, several macro-models have been proposed for the modelling of the infill panels' contribution to the lateral strength of frames. Despite all this effort, a robust model, which takes into account the influence of the vertical load, is not yet available. Furthermore, the influence of the very common case of infill walls with openings, such as windows and doors, has been neglected in all the code provisions that have been published so far. ABSTRACT Background:: The purpose of our study is to compare the accuracy of two electronic apex locators (EALs) in the same teeth in vivo: Root ZX and Dentaport Root-ZX. Methods and Materials: Twenty-two adult patients, ages 36-71. Thirty single-rooted teeth with one canal that were scheduled for extraction for prosthetic or orthodontic reasons were used. Before commencement of the study was obtained and written consent from each patient. The teeth had completely formed apices confirmed by radiographic evaluation before treatment.
