Influence of the channel design on the heat and mass exchange of induction channel furnace

2011

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present in‐depth numerical modelling of heat and mass exchange in industrial induction channel furnace (ICF).Design/methodology/approachThe turbulent heat and mass exchange in the melt is calculated using a three‐dimensional (3D) electromagnetic model and a 3D transient large eddy simulation method. The simulation model has been verified by flow velocity and temperature measurements, which were carried out using an industrial sized channel inductor operating with Wood's metal as a low temperature model melt.FindingsThe ICF is well‐established for melting, holding and casting in the metallurgical industry. But there are still open questions regarding th…

Smart plugs: A low cost solution for programmable control of domestic loads

2014

International audience; Balancing energy demand and production is becoming a more and more challenging task for energy utilities. This is due to a number of different reasons among which the larger penetration of renewable energies which are more difficult to predict and the meagre availability of financial resources to upgrade the existing power grid. While the traditional solution is to dynamically adapt energy production to follow the time-varying demand, a new trend is to drive the demand itself by means of Direct Load Control (DLC). In this paper we consider a scenario where DLC functionalities are deployed at a large set of small deferrable energy loads, like appliances of residential…

Aspects of Improving the Cost-Performance Ratio for the Manufacturing of Small-Size Cast Parts

2010

Abstract The paper analyses some of the commercially available solutions for casting small-size metallic parts and outlines possible solutions that would reduce the cost of such systems while maintaining a high performance level. high performance level. One typical application area for small-size parts is human prosthetics, so the commercial casting machines analysed here are used mainly in this application domain. The paper shows how high-cost systems added to the machines for providing protective atmospheres can be replaced by low-cost solutions with the same results in terms of part quality. Moreover, a solution is described that avoids the typical drawbacks of the currently used casting…

An analytical model for improving precision in single point incremental forming

2007

Abstract In the modern manufacturing scenario and, in particular, in sheet metal forming, the requirement of customised production is still growing. The introduction of incremental forming enables the production of customised components in small lots. In particular, single point incremental forming is characterised by the simplest equipment; any die, in fact, is avoided reducing the necessary tooling to a simple frame, able to clamp the sheet, and a hemispherical punch that imposes the required deformation. This tooling simplicity and the associated process mechanics, in turn, determine a sometimes relevant lack of accuracy. The paper is focused on the investigation of the influence of the …

Ability of Preissmann slot scheme to simulate smooth pressurisation transient in sewers

2010

Urban drainage networks are generally designed to operate in a free-surface flow condition. However, as a consequence of heavy rainfall events or network malfunctioning, filling of sewers (pressurization) and network overflowing may occur. Several softwares are commonly used to simulate floods in drainage networks and their results are usually thought to be reliable and robust. However, no specific studies have been carried out on the behaviour of these softwares during the pressurization transient. Actually, mathematical models based on the momentum equation appear to be more suitable in correctly simulating the pressurization moving jump but models based on the energy equation are much mo…

Capacity and safety analysis of hard-shoulder running (HSR). A motorway case study

2016

Abstract Operational motorway conditions can be improved by introducing traffic flow management and control systems, such as ramp metering (RM), high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, real-time variable speed limits (VSLs), reversible lanes (RL), automated highway systems (AHS) and hard-shoulder running (HSR). The effects of such devices need to be examined in terms of capacity and safety. This paper examines the case study of the Italian motorway A22, which is supposed to be equipped with an HSR system implemented along 128 km in order to reduce congestion with consequent improvement in levels of service (LOS). We studied the traffic processes (capacity, flow distribution between lanes, relia…

Strategic Vision of a Euro-Mediterranean Port City: A Case Study of Palermo

2013

Italian harbours assume a decisive role in order to develop a Euro-Mediterranean web for maritime transportation. The geostrategic position of the Italian peninsula can be seen as a logistic platform at the centre of the maritime trades in the Mediterranean area, giving to its port cities the role of gateway of economic flows. The port poles, meant as hubs, are able to attract investments and create economic growth and territorial development through new operative models of urban usage and management. The management policies have to consider the environmental characteristics and distinctive features, respecting the identity of the places as concrete evidence of history, a source of intellec…

Decoupled control scheme of the grid-connected split-source inverter for renewable energy sources

2016

Grid-connected power conversion systems for renewable energy sources must fulfill several requirements, including high efficiency, reduced cost and complexity, and, quite often, also boost capabilities from the dc sources to the ac power grid. For such applications, single-stage power converters with boost capabilities offer some potential advantages. Among several proposed options, split-source inverter (SSI) has been recently investigated. This paper proposes a decoupled control scheme for the SSIs, where the common mode term of the ac modulation signals is used to control the dc input current. Thus, the dc input current and ac output current can be controlled independently. The proposed …

Research the Opportunities a Foreign Languages’ Competence for Professional Project Management in Latvia

2015

In the current competitive working environment time has become the key resource therefore universities must be able to satisfy higher education needs by enabling students to obtain as many professional skills and knowledge as possible. One of the solutions is to develop online studies by organising the language courses on the internet and by supplementing in-class courses with online study materials. The goal of this work is to research the opportunities a foreign languages’ competence for professional project management in Latvia. Research materials on foreign language teaching methods and applicable IC technological aspects were gathered, and a survey was completed and its results analyse…

Management performance of telework teams based on experimental methods

2009

This paper seeks to answer the following two questions: Which management factors have great effect on the management performance of telework teams? and How should management choose suitable team members for telework? The research will use experimental methods for exploring the novel topic of management performance of telework teams. The experimental design, implementation and result analysis will be done by using a computer experimental system we developed. The experimental research results show that an effective way of improving management performance of telework teams relates to the positive and the negative degrees of psychological factors, team factors, ethical factors and individual ba…
