Comprehension effects of signalling relationships between documents in search engines

2010

A key task for students learning about a complex topic from multiple documents on the web is to establish the existing rhetorical relations between the documents. Traditional search engines such as Google(R) display the search results in a listed format, without signalling any relationship between the documents retrieved. New search engines such as Kartoo(R) go a step further, displaying the results as a constellation of documents, in which the existing relations between pages are made explicit. This presentation format is based on previous studies of single-text comprehension, which demonstrate that providing a graphical overview of the text contents and their relation boosts readers' comp…

Using UDDI for Publishing Metadata of the Semantic Web

2006

Although UDDI does not provide support for semantic search, retrieval and storage, it is already accepted as an industrial standard and a huge number of services already store their service specifications in UDDI. Objective of this paper is to analyze possibilities and ways to use UDDI registry to allow utilization of meta-data encoded according to Semantic Web standards for semantic-based description, discovery and integration of web resources in the context of needs of two research projects: “Adaptive Services Grid” and “SmartResource”. We present an approach of mapping RDFS upper concepts to UDDI data model using tModel structure, which makes possible to store semantically annotated reso…

Blessed Mary, Forgive Us Our Deficits

2013

Many studies have explored the medium-term determinants of current account balances. This paper contributes to the existing literature by introducing religious variables that until now have been omitted. We propose that Catholic countries tend to run current account deficits. This result remains robust even if we include both the official financial flows and the variables measuring the quality of institutions. In total we control for close to all of the variables that have been included in previous studies. To rationalize our result we consulted the World Values Survey and discovered that Roman Catholics do not consider thrift as important as other religious groups.

In the late 1940s he became one of the leaders of the Polish Socialist Party in emigration. He was also active in the Polish Ex-Combatants’ Association and the Federation of Poles in Great Britain. Conclusion: Transnational Histories of the ‘Royal Nation’

2017

The Conclusion summarily analyses the ‘Royal Nation’ as an autonomous historical category. It draws on arguments presented in different chapters of the book, and brings out commonalities between the viewpoints of the authors of these chapters, to demonstrate as to why the interdependence between monarchies and nation-state formation gathered momentous practical significance as well as conceptual plausibility in different parts of the modern world, from the nineteenth century onwards. The Conclusion emphasizes the intellectual, aesthetic and performative, juridical, social, and political underpinnings of this interdependency; it suggests that this mutual imbrication of the royal and the nati…

Virtual atomic and molecular data centre

2010

The Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC, http://www.vamdc.eu) is a European Union funded collaboration between groups involved in the generation, evaluation, and use of atomic and molecular data. VAMDC aims to build a secure, documented, flexible and interoperable e-science environment-based interface to existing atomic and molecular data. The project will cover establishing the core consortium, the development and deployment of the infrastructure and the development of interfaces to the existing atomic and molecular databases. It will also provide a forum for training potential users and dissemination of expertise worldwide. This review describes the scope of the VAMDC project;…

Współczesne systemy bezpieczeństwa w filozoficznej wizji Emmanuela Kanta

2015

The authors of this article to introduce the issue of philosophical issues by Immanuel Kant and his interpretations. The article contains only a limited and necessary extent to which the authors present the main ideas of Kant related to human existence peaceful in the world, based on the work "To the eternal peace. Outline philosophical ". Kant realized that their works do not make changes in his lifetime, and many subsequent generations, but once implanted ideas must find a peaceful base for future communities, which will be able to bear fruit, which Immanuel Kant expected. Thus, the military security in the vision Kant is a world without violence, without the pressure of military elements…

EU external policy at the crossroads: The challenge of actorness and effectiveness

2013

The goal of this Special Issue is to improve our conceptualisation and empirical understanding of EU actorness and effectiveness in International Relations. While the European Union aspires to play a greater global role, its actorness and effectiveness cannot be taken for granted given the nature of the EU as a multi-level and semi-supranational polity encompassing 28 Member States with diverse foreign policy preferences. The EU is presently at an important crossroad. On the one hand, its external policy stature and capacity have been boosted by institutional innovations and by the Union’s increased involvement in the full spectrum of international issues. On the other hand, a number of fa…

The European Union in a Changing World Order: What Is at Stake?

2019

This introductory chapter aims to shed light on how tightly the EU and the liberal international order are entwined and discuss the likely impact on the EU of a changing and, most likely, less liberal world order. The chapter discusses the concept of order in international politics and analyses how the liberal order that emerged after WWII has effected the development of the EU. The chapter introduces the book’s interdisciplinary, holistic approach, and discusses how a changing world order is affecting the EU and how the EU, in turn, is trying to shape the emerging new order by recalibrating its policies and actions in various domains, ranging from its relations with the rest of the world, …

The United Citizens Organization: Public-private partnerships in global governance

2020

Abstract Can Public-Private Partnerships be applied to global affairs and governance? This paper reviews the existing relations between public and private global actors. I argue that current international politics is largely an outcome of these relations. Although for the foreseeable future the role of traditional nation-states on the global scene should not be dismissed, they come under the constant pressure of different private actors, particularly of MNCs and NGOs. If this is the case, the question of global responsibility must be raised. It has been the traditional role of governments to stand for such societal values as security and prosperity, and be responsible for their citizens. Wi…
