Current Trends in Advanced Alginate-Based Wound Dressings for Chronic Wounds

2021

Chronic wounds represent a major public health issue, with an extremely high cost worldwide. In healthy individuals, the wound healing process takes place in different stages: inflammation, cell proliferation (fibroblasts and keratinocytes of the dermis), and finally remodeling of the extracellular matrix (equilibrium between metalloproteinases and their inhibitors). In chronic wounds, the chronic inflammation favors exudate persistence and bacterial film has a special importance in the dynamics of chronic inflammation in wounds that do not heal. Recent advances in biopolymer-based materials for wound healing highlight the performance of specific alginate forms. An ideal wound dressing shou…

RADIATION CROSSLINKED ADVANCED WOUND DRESSING CONTAINING EGG WHITE PROTEINS

During the past decades, the use of antibiotics has grown worldwide in different fields, from medicine to agriculture, leading to antibiotic resistance of microbes, which is the cause of thousands of deaths every year worldwide. [1, 2] Finding new antibiotics is becoming more and more difficult because their development is no longer convenient in term of the cost–benefit ratio for the pharmaceutical industry. The interest in egg white proteins, such as ovoalbumin, ovotransferrin and lysozyme, has risen especially because of their demonstrated antimicrobial activities. [3] These antimicrobial proteins can then be used to enrich wound dressing films that requires a high level of control of mi…

Fibrillar polymeric patches suitable for wound healing

2018

Multilayered scaffolds can be designed to improve soft material applicability for regenerative medicine purposes. Excellent results can be obtained by combining the main characteristics of the biopolymers and giving a specific function to each layer. A microfluidic-assisted electrospinning process is an elegant arrangement between two fiber fabrication techniques that defines finely every portion of an electrospun scaffold. Unlike classic electrospinning technique, multiple flows can be carefully monitored and separated in real time using microfluidic sensors. This method allows users to establish anisotropic properties to scaffolds, in other words it is possible to modulate gradients by ch…

Tenascin gene expression in rat liver and in rat liver cells. In vivo and in vitro studies.

1991

Tenascin is a major glycoprotein constituent of the extracellular matrix with a strong affinity to fibronectin; its distribution is believed to be temporarily and spatially limited. Tenascin gene expression is increased during wound healing processes. As repair mechanisms in chronic liver diseases resemble wound healing we studied tenascin gene expression in rat liver and in isolated rat liver cells. In normal rat liver a tenascin specific antiserum stains sinusoidal cells with fiber-like prolongations, which at the same time are desmin-positive (ITO-cells). In the CCl4-acutely-damaged liver a strong tenascin staining is detected in cells located among the mononuclear cells of the inflammat…

Aby odzyskać zdrowie, złóż ofiarę w świątyni. Mechanika uzdrowień i punktów życia w grach fabularnych

2019

Pen and paper RPGs are on the rise once morę, after two decades of continuus decline, and as morę and morę important they become in the gaming media as a whole, it is important to look at their approach towards narrative and gamę design. One of the most difficult things to do in tabletop RPG design is simulating the process of getting wounded and then healed. As heroes of this games tend to participate in rather dangerous adventures, wounds are in- evitable and so is attending to them. Different games have different Solutions for presenting them, and as I presented in the paper, those approaches can be seen by their devotion towards realism or clean mathematics of gamę mechanics. As strange…

Biomaterial-Assisted Anastomotic Healing: Serosal Adhesion of Pectin Films

2021

Anastomotic leakage is a frequent complication of intestinal surgery and a major source of surgical morbidity. The timing of anastomotic failures suggests that leaks are the result of inadequate mechanical support during the vulnerable phase of wound healing. To identify a biomaterial with physical and mechanical properties appropriate for assisted anastomotic healing, we studied the adhesive properties of the plant-derived structural heteropolysaccharide called pectin. Specifically, we examined high methoxyl citrus pectin films at water contents between 17–24% for their adhesivity to ex vivo porcine small bowel serosa. In assays of tensile adhesion strength, pectin demonstrated significant…

Five insights from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

2020

The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 provides a rules-based synthesis of the available evidence on levels and trends in health outcomes, a diverse set of risk factors, and health system responses. GBD 2019 covered 204 countries and territories, as well as first administrative level disaggregations for 22 countries, from 1990 to 2019. Because GBD is highly standardised and comprehensive, spanning both fatal and non-fatal outcomes, and uses a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of hierarchical disease and injury causes, the study provides a powerful basis for detailed and broad insights on global health trends and emerging challenges. GBD …

Xyloglucan-based hydrogel film for wound dressing: Structure and biological properties relationships

2018

Crosslinked xyloglucan-poly(vinyl alcohol) based hydrogel films have been synthetized and characterized for wound healing applications. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and glycerol (Gro) were added to have an optimal combination of softness, conformability and resilience. Physical hydrogel have been transformed into permanent covalent hydrogels by reaction with glutaraldehyde (GA). Chemical and physical properties of the films have been analyzed by different technique. Moreover, biocompatibility of a selected formulation was assessed in vitro by investigating different aspects, such as cell viability, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and specific stress biomarkers. Partial adhesiveness w…
