Fold interaction and wavelength selection in 3D models of multilayer detachment folding

2014

Abstract Many fold-and-thrust belts are dominated by folding and exhibit a fairly regular fold-spacing. Yet, in map-view, the aspect ratio of doubly-plunging anticlines varies considerably from very elongated, and sometimes slightly curved, cylindrical folds to nearly circular, dome-like structures. In addition, the fold spacing often varies significantly around an average value. So far, it remains unclear whether these features are consistent with a folding instability. Therefore, we here study the dynamics of multilayer detachment folding, process by which shortening can be accommodated in thin-skinned fold-and-thrust belts. We start by analysing the physics of this process by using both …

Analytical and Numerical Investigation of 3D Multilayer Detachment Folding

2013

Multilayer detachment folding, in which a sequence of sedimentary layers is compressed above a weaker salt layer, is a common mode of deformation in thin-skinned fold-and-thrust belts. Here, we investigate the dynamics of multilayer detachment folding with three different viscosities: lower detachment or salt layer, overlying weak layers and competent layers. A semi-analytical solution, based on thick plate analysis of multilayer systems, is used to create mechanical phase diagrams of folding dominant wavelength and growth rate as a function of material parameters. The validity of the phase diagrams is tested and confirmed beyond the nucleation stages of folding by performing several 2D and…

Mapping inequalities in exclusive breastfeeding in low- and middle-income countries, 2000-2018

2021

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF)—giving infants only breast-milk for the first 6 months of life—is a component of optimal breastfeeding practices effective in preventing child morbidity and mortality. EBF practices are known to vary by population and comparable subnational estimates of prevalence and progress across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are required for planning policy and interventions. Here we present a geospatial analysis of EBF prevalence estimates from 2000 to 2018 across 94 LMICs mapped to policy-relevant administrative units (for example, districts), quantify subnational inequalities and their changes over time, and estimate probabilities of meeting the World Health …

A comprehensive RNA-Seq-based gene expression atlas of the summer squash (Cucurbita pepo) provides insights into fruit morphology and ripening mechan…

2021

[EN] Background Summer squash (Cucurbita pepo: Cucurbitaceae) are a popular horticultural crop for which there is insufficient genomic and transcriptomic information. Gene expression atlases are crucial for the identification of genes expressed in different tissues at various plant developmental stages. Here, we present the first comprehensive gene expression atlas for a summer squash cultivar, including transcripts obtained from seeds, shoots, leaf stem, young and developed leaves, male and female flowers, fruits of seven developmental stages, as well as primary and lateral roots. Results In total, 27,868 genes and 2352 novel transcripts were annotated from these 16 tissues, with over 18,0…

Age-dependent regulation of antioxidant genes by p38α MAPK in the liver

2018

p38α is a redox sensitive MAPK activated by pro-inflammatory cytokines and environmental, genotoxic and endoplasmic reticulum stresses. The aim of this work was to assess whether p38α controls the antioxidant defense in the liver, and if so, to elucidate the mechanism(s) involved and the age-related changes. For this purpose, we used liver-specific p38α-deficient mice at two different ages: young-mice (4 months-old) and old-mice (24 months-old). The liver of young p38α knock-out mice exhibited a decrease in GSH levels and an increase in GSSG/GSH ratio and malondialdehyde levels. However, old mice deficient in p38α had higher hepatic GSH levels and lower GSSG/GSH ratio than young p38α knock-…

Innovations sociales et création de valeur partagée au sein des entreprises

2017

This work focuses on social innovations that are likely to create shared value, that is, to seek commercial success that has the potential to generate benefits for the society. This shared value deals with the wellbeing of low-income consumers and poor people. These innovations are also a lever to reduce the pressures that can be exerted by stakeholders in the social-political sphere (regulatory authorities and soft power), if the company does not reduce the negative externalities produced by its activities.

Backward solution of PV nodes in radial distribution networks

2009

In this paper an iterative backward methodology to solve radial distribution networks with fixed voltage (PV) nodes and with constant power loads or mixed loads (with at least one component with constant power) is proposed. The method developed, although deriving conceptually from the backward/forward (b/f) methodology, presents only the backward phase in which all the network variables are evaluated. In themethods developed up until nowfor the solution of such systems, PV nodes are taken into account at the end of each iteration by evaluating, based on the known quantities of the network, the unknowns associated with PV nodes. In the methodology developed here the unknowns relevant to PV n…

Direct Measurement of Reoxygenation in Malignant Mammary Tumors after a Single Large Dose of Irradiation

1984

Due to functional and morphological abnormalities of the terminal vascular bed in malignant tumors, a severe restriction of convective transport occurs even in very early growth stages. This leads to nutritional deprivation of the cancer cells and to unfavourable cellular microenvironments as well. During advanced tumor growth stages, the nutritional deprivation and the milieu conditions get worse because pronounced deterioration of diffusive transport is superimposed on the insufficient blood supply. This transport limitation is mainly caused by increases of intercapillary distances and by decreases of vascular surface areas per unit tissue volume. Moreover, these peculiarities of the tumo…
