Crystal growth and phase transitions of solid solutions in [N(CH3)4]2MX4 isomorph class
1989
Abstract Homogeneous single crystals of tetramethylammonium tetrahalogenometallate solid solutions have been grown: a temperature difference growth method with thermally enforced convection was used during the material transport from an equilibrated feed material to the growing crystals. The smallest crystals were mostly studied by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray crystallography. Some bigger crystals were available for dielectric measurements and Raman scattering. The temperature-concentration phase diagrams of solid solutions look like the temperature-pressure phase diagrams of pure tetramethylammonium salts. The progressive substitution seems equivalent to a change of the pres…
DECORIN EFFECTS ON PROTEOMIC PROFILING OF BREAST CANCER CELLS: AN UPDATED STUDY
2015
The malignant carcinomas are characterized by several capabilities acquired by the neoplastic cells, among which the ability to invade the extracellular matrix (ECM) and to establish a crosstalk with several ECM components. Under this respect, the extracellular microenvironment is an entity extraordinarily rich of information with opposite signals. Our group has long undertaken the study of the effects of ECM molecules on the behavior of cancer cells in vitro. Among the studied molecules, the decorin was found to exert a non-permissive effect on the growth and motility of the transfected tumor cells. The decorin, belongs to the family of small leucine-rich proteoglycans (SLRP) and is involv…
The Burrows-Wheeler Transform between Data Compression and Combinatorics on Words
2013
The Burrows-Wheeler Transform (BWT) is a tool of fundamental importance in Data Compression and, recently, has found many applications well beyond its original purpose. The main goal of this paper is to highlight the mathematical and combinatorial properties on which the outstanding versatility of the $BWT$ is based, i.e. its reversibility and the clustering effect on the output. Such properties have aroused curiosity and fervent interest in the scientific world both for theoretical aspects and for practical effects. In particular, in this paper we are interested both to survey the theoretical research issues which, by taking their cue from Data Compression, have been developed in the conte…
Study of the ZnO crystal growth by vapour transport methods
2004
Abstract The crystal growth of ZnO by vapour transport is classically made with the assistance of additional species that produce a gaseous mixture, the role of which remains often uncertain in the transport and growth process. Initially, in order to study the mass transport process, a numerical simulation is made to analyse which are the requirements to have an effective transport. As the pressure of each gaseous species is generally unknown, the numerical study has been performed for different total pressures. It is found that, if congruent and equilibrium conditions are assumed at the sublimation and crystallisation interfaces, effective growth conditions can only be attained for a narro…
Preliminary thermal optimization and investigation of the overall structural behaviour of the EU-DEMO water-cooled lead lithium left outboard blanket…
2022
The conceptual design phase of the EU-DEMO reactor has been recently launched, with the aim of evolving the DEMO pre-conceptual layout towards a more robust and articulated geometric configuration able to cope with most of the design requirements and to show further margins for the passing of the current potential show-stoppers. Hence, the achievement of the conceptual design of the Water-Cooled Lead Lithium Breeding Blanket (WCLL BB) is one of the milestones the EUROfusion consortium aims to achieve in the close future. To this purpose, within the framework of the research activities promoted by EUROfusion, a research campaign has been launched at the University of Palermo, in close cooper…
The Changing Meaning of Development: SID in the Early Decades
2007
Michele Alacevich presents a brief history of the development through the perspective of the Society for International Development (SID). He highlights some of the key ideas promoted by leading development thinkers and practitioners who contributed to SID and its journal in the first decades.
Ras, Rap, and Rac Small GTP-binding Proteins Are Targets for Clostridium sordellii Lethal Toxin Glucosylation
1996
Lethal toxin (LT) from Clostridium sordellii is one of the high molecular mass clostridial cytotoxins. On cultured cells, it causes a rounding of cell bodies and a disruption of actin stress fibers. We demonstrate that LT is a glucosyltransferase that uses UDP-Glc as a cofactor to covalently modify 21-kDa proteins both in vitro and in vivo. LT glucosylates Ras, Rap, and Rac. In Ras, threonine at position 35 was identified as the target amino acid glucosylated by LT. Other related members of the Ras GTPase superfamily, including RhoA, Cdc42, and Rab6, were not modified by LT. Incubation of serum-starved Swiss 3T3 cells with LT prevents the epidermal growth factor-induced phosphorylation of m…
Discovery and validation of small-molecule heat-shock protein 90 inhibitors through multimodality molecular imaging in living subjects.
2012
Up-regulation of the folding machinery of the heat-shock protein 90 (Hsp90) chaperone protein is crucial for cancer progression. The two Hsp90 isoforms (α and β) play different roles in response to chemotherapy. To identify isoform-selective inhibitors of Hsp90(α/β)/cochaperone p23 interactions, we developed a dual-luciferase (Renilla and Firefly) reporter system for high-throughput screening (HTS) and monitoring the efficacy of Hsp90 inhibitors in cell culture and live mice. HTS of a 30,176 small-molecule chemical library in cell culture identified a compound, N -(5-methylisoxazol-3-yl)-2-[4-(thiophen-2-yl)-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidin-2-ylthio]acetamide (CP9), that binds to Hsp90(α/β) an…
Effect of a novel chemical mixture on senescence processes and plant--fungus interaction in Solanaceae plants.
2001
The effects of exogenous application of a chemical mixture consisting of adipic acid monoethyl ester, furfurylamine, and 1,2,3,4-tetra-O-acetyl-beta-D-glucopyranose (FGA) on various metabolic pathways and the plant-fungus interaction have been studied in Solanaceae plants. Tomato and pepper plants were sprayed with the FGA mixture, and different biochemical parameters such as gas exchange, chlorophyll concentration, protein, cell wall sugar and phenolics contents, and peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activities were measured. FGA-treated plants showed, in general, an increase in cell wall sugar content and decreases in the chlorophyll degrading rate and the peroxidase activi…
Growth patterns at distal radius and tibial shaft in pubertal girls: a 2-year longitudinal study.
2005
Bone changes, in terms of both size and BMD, were assessed longitudinally in pubertal girls. Before puberty, BMD at the distal radius declined, whereas bone size increased, suggesting that normal growing girls experience a transient period of increased bone fragility. This could explain the elevated low-trauma forearm fracture rates reported in earlier studies. Introduction: Longitudinal data on bone growth during puberty are sparse. Such information is needed to understand the sequence of biological changes, the physical and mechanical consequences for the growing skeleton, and the implications for later life. Materials and Methods: The geometric properties and volumetric BMD (vBMD) of the…
