The role of insulin-like growth factor II in the malignant transformation of rat liver oval cells
1997
Oval cells are small nonparenchymal epithelial cells that first appear in the periportal areas of the liver and thereafter invade the whole parenchyma when mice or rats are exposed to a variety of chemical carcinogens. In the present study we have analyzed the expression of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF II) in the recently established oval cell line OC/CDE 22 and its malignantly transformed counterpart (the M22 cells) and the biological consequences of the constitutive expression of IGF II in oval cells. OC/CDE 22 cells do not express the above-mentioned growth factor, whereas the M22 cells do and addition of a neutralizing anti-IGF II antibody to M22 cells resulted in an almost comple…
Do nutritional supplements have a role in age macular degeneration prevention?
2013
Purpose. To review the proposed pathogenic mechanisms of age macular degeneration (AMD), as well as the role of antioxidants (AOX) and omega-3 fatty acids (ω-3) supplements in AMD prevention.Materials and Methods. Current knowledge on the cellular/molecular mechanisms of AMD and the epidemiologic/experimental studies on the effects of AOX andω-3 were addressed all together with the scientific evidence and the personal opinion of professionals involved in the Retina Group of the OFTARED (Spain).Results. High dietary intakes ofω-3 and macular pigments lutein/zeaxanthin are associated with lower risk of prevalence and incidence in AMD. The Age-Related Eye Disease study (AREDS) showed a benefic…
Effects of 1-(halogenalkoxy)alkyl-5-fluorouracil derivatives on cell growth, cell volume and nucleus size of mouse lymphoma cells.
1992
The effects of three 1-(halogenalkoxy)alkyl-5-fluorouracil derivatives on cultured mouse lymphoma cells were studied and compared with those of N-methyl-bis-(2-chloroethyl)amine hydrochloride (Lost). The derivatives exert only little influence on cell proliferation and cell volume. However, all derivatives cause a concentration-dependent nucleus contraction, probably due to DNA cross-linkings. Bromodesoxyuridine modulates the effects of the derivatives on the DNA, leading to swelling of the nucleus, which may be caused by DNA strand-breaks. It is suggested that the derivatives exert synergistic effects with other factors. It is concluded that these studies are suitable for the prescreening …
Social research evolution in management accounting : reflection using Bunge’s theory
2004
Abstract Actually Management Accounting is considered for an important group of researchers as a social science. This is a consequence of an evolution from an economic view to social-oriented perspectives. Following Mario Bunge’s theory, we establish that break point in 1980s. Until 1980s, the accounting research was dominated by an economic analysis with both utilitarian and cognitive objectives. The scientific growth was in surface , without any relevant change in the foundations of Management Accounting. The development of new concerns regarding social implications promotes a growth in-depth in the 1980s. Socio-economic analysis, both in interpretative and critical research, is developed…
Efficacy of NaOCl/H2O2irrigation and GaAlAs laser in decontamination of root canals in vitro
2003
Background and Objectives To investigate the bactericidal effect of an 809 nm semiconductor laser alone, and in combination with NaOCl/H2O2 irrigation in root canals in vitro. Study Design/Materials and Methods A total of 72 human single-rooted teeth extracted for periodontal reasons were included. The crowns were removed, the roots shortened to a length of 12 mm, and the canals enlarged up to an apical size of #50 file. The specimens were autoclaved and incubated with a suspension of Streptococcus sanguinis (ATCC 10556). Laser irradiation was performed on a PC-controlled XY translation stage. A 200 micron optic fiber was used. Twelve specimens were irradiated at a power output of 1.5, 3.0,…
An O2-sensitive glomus cell-stem cell synapse induces carotid body growth in chronic hypoxia.
2013
Summary Neural stem cells (NSCs) exist in germinal centers of the adult brain and in the carotid body (CB), an oxygen-sensing organ that grows under chronic hypoxemia. How stem cell lineage differentiation into mature glomus cells is coupled with changes in physiological demand is poorly understood. Here, we show that hypoxia does not affect CB NSC proliferation directly. Rather, mature glomus cells expressing endothelin-1, the O 2 -sensing elements in the CB that secrete neurotransmitters in response to hypoxia, establish abundant synaptic-like contacts with stem cells, which express endothelin receptors, and instruct their growth. Inhibition of glomus cell transmitter release or their sel…

Aim The absence of reliable single serum biomarkers for oral premalignant lesion (OPL) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) limits early diagnosis, monitoring of advanced disease, and prediction of prognosis. Methods In this prospective study, serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2, MMP-3, MMP-13, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-3 were measured in 81 untreated OSCC patients, 49 healthy subjects, and 75 individuals with OPLs, and correlated with clinicopathological parameters. Results Serum levels of MMP-3 were significantly higher in OSCC patients compared to healthy subjects (p=0.004). Mean IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels in OSCC patients were sign…
Age-related changes in cholesterol metabolism in macrosomic offspring of rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes.
2001
The aim of this study was to determine the impact of diabetic macrosomia on cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism. Age-related changes in the activities of serum LCAT, hepatic HMG-CoA reductase, cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase, and ACAT, the major enzymes involved in cholesterol metabolism, were determined in macrosomic offspring of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Hepatic, serum, and lipoprotein cholesterol contents were also examined. Mild hyperglycemia in pregnant rats was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (40 mg/kg body weight) on day 5 of gestation. Control pregnant rats were injected with citrate buffer. At birth, macrosomic pups had higher serum, LDL-HDL1, and H…
Pancreatic ascites haemoglobin up-regulates the HIF/VEGF pathway in the lung in severe acute pancreatitis
2015
Extracellular haemoglobin (EHb) is considered a toxic molecule due to its cytotoxicity and peroxidase activity. EHb may release free hemin that increases vascular permeability, leukocyte recruitment, and adhesion molecule expression. Pancreatitis-associated ascitic fluid is reddish and may contain cell-free hemoglobin. Our aim was to determine the role of EHb in the local and systemic inflammatory response during severe acute pancreatitis in rats. To this end, taurocholate-induced necrotizing pancreatitis in rats was used. EHb levels were quantified in ascites and plasma and the hemolytic action of ascitic fluid was tested. Furthermore, we assessed if peritoneal lavage prevented the increas…
