Rheological and Flocculation Analysis of Microfibrillated Cellulose Suspension Using Optical Coherence Tomography

2018

A sub-micron resolution optical coherence tomography device was used together with a pipe rheometer to analyze the rheology and flocculation dynamics of a 0.5% microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) suspension. The bulk behavior of the MFC suspension showed typical shear thinning (power-law) behavior. This was reflected in a monotonously decreasing floc size when the shear stress exceeded the yield stress of the suspension. The quantitative viscous behavior of the MFC suspension changed abruptly at the wall shear stress of 10 Pa, which was reflected in a simultaneous abrupt drop of the floc size. The flocs were strongly elongated with low shear stresses. With the highest shear stresses, the flocs…

La segmentazione della domanda e dell’offerta nell’industria dell’ospitalità

2010

No two customers are identical, even whereas they belong to the same marketing program or they choose the same product or service (Withiam G., 2000). Revenues, costs and therefore profitability differ because of the different effort required to meet the specific need of the specific consumer or group of customers. When competing, firms target information towards specific segments through direct marketing initiatives and actions (Cross R.G., 1997). This finding underlines the importance of knowing in advance customer’s characteristics, even before thinking at the service to provide, and aims to illustrate how the lodging industry normally segments its customers, and which group of customers …

Optimizing [13N]N2 radiochemistry for nitrogen-fixation in root nodules of legumes

2010

Here we explored the conditions for synthesizing [ 13 N]N 2 in a state that is suitable for the administration to plant root nodules enabling studies of nitrogen fixation. [ 13 N]N 2 was prepared batchwise, starting with [ 13 N]NO ― 3 from the 16 O(p,α) 13 N nuclear reaction on a liquid water target. [ 13 N]NO ― 3 was first reduced to [ 13 N]NH 3 using Devarda's alloy, and then the [ 13 N]NH 3 was oxidized to [ 13 N]N 2 by hypobromite using carrier-added NH 4 CI. The amounts of carrier NH 4 CI and hypobromite were varied to determine the effects these parameters had on the radiochemical yield, and on the radiotracer specific activity. As expected, increasing the amount of carrier NH 4 CI im…

Dialysis of flavour compounds: Yields of extraction on model solution

1993

The extraction of 58 flavour compounds by Nafion membrane dialysis was studied using a model solution. Reproducibility and yield of the method were investigated. The coefficient of variation of the extraction yield was less than 15% for 48 of the 58 compounds tested. When the number of carbon atoms increased, the extraction yield fell to zero for compounds with more than ten carbon atoms. Flavour compounds with a cyclic structure showed a better diffusion rate through the membrane than other compounds with the same number of carbon atoms. The extraction yield seems to be correlated mainly to the hydrophobicity of the molecule. The use of the method for quantitative analysis was studied. Ext…

D-Glucose as a Pentavalent Chiral Scaffold

2003

A novel carbohydrate-based scaffold for combinatorial chemistry has been developed. This scaffold allows the selective attachment of five different side chains, giving rise to products of enormous structural diversity. As a demonstration of its usefulness, a series of model compounds has been prepared in high purity and yield by multistep parallel synthesis on a solid phase. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Measurement ofΥ(1S+2S+3S)production inp+pand Au + Au collisions atsNN=200GeV

2015

Measurements of bottomonium production in heavy-ion and p + p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are presented. The inclusive yield of the three states, (1S + 2S + 3S), was measured in the PHENIX experiment via electron-positron decay pairs at midrapidity for Au + Au and p + p collisions at root sNN = 200 GeV. The (1S + 2S + 3S) -> e(+)e(-) differential cross section at midrapidity was found to be B(ee)d sigma/dy = 108 +/- 38 (stat) +/- 15 (syst) +/- 11 (luminosity) pb in p + p collisions. The nuclear modification factor in the 30% most central Au + Au collisions indicates a suppression of the total. state yield relative to the extrapolation from p + p collision data. …

Electron Emission of Pt: Experimental Study and Comparison With Models in the Multipactor Energy Range

2016

Experimental data of secondary emission yield (SEY) and electron emission spectra of Pt under electron irradiation for normal incidence and primary energies lower than 1 keV are presented. Several relevant magnitudes, as total SEY, elastic backscattering probability, secondary emission spectrum, and backscattering coefficient, are given for different primary energies. These magnitudes are compared with theoretical or semiempirical formulas commonly used in the related literature.

Testing the Modified Sediment Delivery Model (MOSEDD) at SPA2 Experimental Basin, Sicily (Italy)

2017

A new version of a spatially distributed sediment delivery model taking into account the hillslope sediment transport efficiency, named MOSEDD, is presented. This model gives estimates of basin sediment yield at event scale, which are more reliable than those obtained by the original SEDD. For SPA2 basin discretized into morphological units, four different calculation schemes of MOSEDD, including the original SEDD version, were applied. All parameterization schemes of the model were calibrated using 15 events measured at the outlet of the experimental basin in the period February 2005–February 2010. The model calibration was used to determine a relationship between the coefficient βₑ of the…

Long-term erosional responses after fire in the Central Spanish Pyrenees

2005

Abstract This paper reports the results of a study on how fire effects water and sediment losses in the Central Spanish Pyrenees where land abandonment results in an increase of the scrubland and fire-affected surfaces. In 1991, two plots (control and burnt) were installed to collect runoff, suspended sediments and solutes. One of the plots was burnt (burnt-1) and the other was covered by shrubs and herbs (control). During 1993, another burnt plot was installed (burnt-2). Data was collected from the three plots until 1999 and is used as the basis for assessing the soil erosion changes after the fire. Runoff, solute and suspended sediment concentration and erosion rates were slightly greater…

Characterizing rainfall erosivity by kinetic power-Median volume diameter relationship

2018

Abstract Kinetic power, i.e. kinetic energy per unit time and area, is the variable widely used to represent the rainfall erosivity which affects soil loss and sediment yield. This paper shows the results of an experimental investigation using the raindrop size distributions (DSDs) measured by an optical disdrometer installed at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Sciences of University of Palermo in Italy (June 2006–March 2014) and at the El Teularet experimental station in Spain (July 2015–May 2016). At first an analysis of the DSDs aggregated into intensity classes is carried out, then the measured kinetic power values are determined. The aggregated DSDs allowed to establis…
