The acute myotoxic effects of bupivacaine and ropivacaine after continuous peripheral nerve blockades.
2003
Bupivacaine causes muscle damage. However, the myotoxic potency of ropivacaine is still unexplored. Therefore, we performed this study to compare the effects of bupivacaine and ropivacaine on skeletal muscle tissue in equipotent concentrations. Femoral nerve catheters were inserted into anesthetized minipigs, and 20 mL of either bupivacaine (5 mg/mL) or ropivacaine (7.5 mg/mL) was injected. Subsequently, bupivacaine (2.5 mg/mL) and ropivacaine (3.75 mg/mL) were continuously infused over 6 h. Control animals were treated with corresponding volumes of normal saline. Finally, muscle samples were dissected at injection sites. After processing and staining, histological patterns of muscle damage…
Efficient 3D Deep Learning for Myocardial Diseases Segmentation
2021
Automated myocardial segmentation from late gadolinium enhancement magnetic resonance images (LGE-MRI) is a critical step in the diagnosis of cardiac pathologies such as ischemia and myocardial infarction. This paper proposes a deep learning framework for improved myocardial diseases segmentation. In the first step, we build an encoder-decoder segmentation network that generates myocardium and cavity segmentations from the whole volume, followed by a 3D U-Net based on Shape prior to identifying myocardial infarction and myocardium ventricular obstruction (MVO) segmentations from the encoder-decoder prediction. The proposed network achieves good segmentation performance, as computed by avera…
Developmental expression of human cartilage matrix protein.
1994
Cartilage matrix protein (CMP) is a non-collagenous component of cartilage with a yet unknown function. In this study we used in situ hybridization to investigate the temporal and sptial distribution of CMP transcripts during human embryonic and early fetal development, and compared it to the pattern of expression observed for collagen types I, II, X, and decorin. The distribution of CMP and collagen type II transcripts followed a similar pattern in the embryonic bone anlage, the fetal growth plate, and the developing vertebral column. Expression was highest in the upper hypertrophic and lower proliferative zone, whereas calcified cartilage was negative throughout the different stages of bo…
Impact of Structural Heart Disease on the Acute Complication Rate in Atrial Fibrillation Ablation: Results from the German Ablation Registry
2013
Acute Complication Rate in AF Ablation Introduction Catheter ablation (CA) has emerged as a widespread therapeutic option in the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF). Currently, no safety data with regard to the impact of the underlying structural heart diseases (SHD) are available. We sought to assess the risk for acute and long-term complications during CA of AF in relation to underlying SHD. Methods and Results We included 6,211 patients in a prospective registry undergoing CA of AF in 41 nationwide centers. All patients were divided into 4 groups according to the underlying heart disease: No SHD (69.4%), hypertensive heart disease (HHD) (12.0%), coronary artery disease (CAD) (15.1%), a…
Gender differences related to the presence of atrial fibrillation in older hypertensive patients
2013
AIM: To determine whether there are gender differences in the epidemiological profile of atrial fibrillation (AF) and to characterise the clinical, biochemical, and therapeutic factors associated with AF. METHODS: Each investigator (primary care physicians or physicians based in hospital units for hypertension treatment) recruited the first 3 patients with an age of ≥ 65 years and a clinical diagnosis of hypertension (ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and an electrocardiogram, were performed) on the first working day of the week for 5 wk and identified those individuals with atrial fibrillation. A binary logistic regression was performed, including all of the variables that were signific…
EP485 Confounding factors of trans-vaginal ultrasonography accuracy in endometrial cancer
2019
Introduction/Background Endometrial cancer is the most frequently diagnosed gynecological tumor with more than 60.000 new cases each year. Following the ESMO-ESGO-ESTRO consensus conference, patients are classified in different classes of risk for lymph node metastases based on the instrumental suspected stage of the disease. In this scenario, a correct pre-operative workup is essential for a proper planning treatment offered to the patient. Although most of the oncological centers have replaced the MRI with trans-vaginal ultrasound, this, in the international guidelines, is considered only in the fertility sparing and in cases of contraindicated MRI. The Aim of our study is to evaluate the…
Primary angioplasty versus intravenous thrombolysis in acute myocardial infarction: can we define subgroups of patients benefiting most from primary …
2001
Abstract OBJECTIVES We sought to determine the effectiveness of primary angioplasty compared with thrombolysis in clinical practice. BACKGROUND In clinical practice, primary angioplasty for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has not yet been proven more effective than intravenous thrombolysis, nor have subgroups of patients been identified who would perhaps benefit from primary angioplasty. METHODS The pooled data of two AMI registries—the Maximal Individual TheRapy in Acute myocardial infarction (MITRA) study and the Myocardial Infarction Registry (MIR)—were analyzed. A total of 9,906 lytic-eligible patients with AMI, with a pre-hospital delay of ≤12 h, were treated with ei…
249 Validation of assessment of circulate oxidative stress markers by the Free Oxygen Radicals Testing (FORT) assay among patients with an acute myoc…
2011
BackgroundFree oxygen radicals play an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and aging. Several methods were developed for the direct or indirect measurement of oxygen free radical and its by-products. Using a new Free Oxygen Radicals Testing (FORT) the current study is designed first to validate the device and to investigate the potential relationships between the ROS and clinical or biological factors in human serum from a population of men with an acute myocardial infarction (AMI).MethodsWe first determined the effect of storage, variability and reproducibility of the FORT test in serum. Then we used the test in 66 patient…

With suitable application and signal processing methods, surface electromyography is a comparatively simple instrument for investigating the temporal pattern of the muscular activity of a walking subject. The influence of changes both in the external experimental conditions (e.g. orthopedic shoe design) and in the human locomotor system (due to disease or therapy) on the individual muscular gait characteristics can be documented in this way. The usefulness of this kind of investigation is basically limited by the reproducibility of the gait analytical findings of the subject, who is examined at different times with unchanged bodily state and under identical experimental conditions unchanged…
