Near-coincidence lattice method for the determination of epitaxy strains during oxidation of metals

2000

Abstract A theoretical method is proposed to evaluate the strains due to epitaxy between a metal and its oxide. Based on Bollmann’s approach of two adjoining grains, it uses the quantitative texture analysis of the two materials separated by the phase boundary. Our study of the Zr/ZrO 2 and Mo/MoO 3 systems reveals strong correlations between the criterion of best fit proposed by Bollmann and the orientation distribution function obtained by a quantitative texture analysis. The results of this study are used in a thermo-mechano-chemical simulation of the oxidation process of zirconium, which leads to this observation: two different zirconia orientations induce two different oxidation kineti…

Influences of Structure and Composition on the Photoelectrochemical Behaviour of Anodic Films on Zr and Zr-20at.%Ti

2008

Abstract A photoelectrochemical investigation on anodic films of different thickness grown on sputter-deposited Zr and Zr–20 at.%Ti was carried out. The estimated optical band gap and flat band potential of thick ( U F  ≥ 50 V) anodic films were related to their crystalline structure and compared with those obtained for thinner ( U F  ≤ 8 V/SCE) anodic oxides having undetermined crystalline structure. The E g values obtained by photocurrent spectroscopy were also compared with the experimental band gap estimated by other optical ex situ techniques and with the available theoretical estimates of the zirconia electronic structures in an attempt to reconcile the wide range of band gap data rep…

ChemInform Abstract: Photoelectrochemical Characterization of Thin Anodic Oxide Films on Zirconium Metal.

2010

Abstract The effect of metal surface preparation on the properties of thin oxide films grown on zirconium in different electrolytes was investigated by photocurrent spectroscopy. Both passive layers grown by free corrosion of the samples in a solution and thin oxides grown anodically at a constant rate were investigated. The photoelectrochemical results give a complex picture of the interface, being influenced by the metal surface preparation, the solution pH and the electrode potential. A duplex structure of the films has been suggested on the basis of the photocurrent spectra, with an external hydrous layer (amorphous or strongly defective) having an optical gap ( E g 2 ~ 3 eV) lower resp…

Pairing-excitation versus intruder states inNi68andZr90

2010

A discussion on the nature of the 0{sup +} states in {sup 68}Ni (Z=28, N=40) is presented and a comparison is made with its valence counterpart {sup 90}Zr (Z=40, N=50). Evidence is given for a 0{sup +} proton-intruder state at only {approx}2.2-MeV excitation energy in {sup 68}Ni, while the analogous neutron-intruder states in {sup 90}Zr reside at 4126 and 5441 keV. The application of a shell-model description of 0{sup +} intruder states reveals that many pair-scattered neutrons across N=40 have to be involved to explain the low excitation energy of the proton-intruder configuration in {sup 68}Ni.

Ion beam coolers in nuclear physics

2003

Cooling techniques for low-energy radioactive ion beams are reviewed together with applications on high-precision measurements of ground state properties of exotic nuclei. The emphasis in the presentation is on cooling, bunching and improving the overall characteristics of ion beams by RFQ-driven buffer gas cooling devices. Application of cooled and bunched beams in collinear laser spectroscopy to extract isotope shifts and hyperfine structure are presented with examples on radioactive Ti, Zr and Hf isotopes. The impact of the new-generation coolers on mass measurements of short-lived nuclei is discussed with examples on precision measurements of masses of super-allowed beta emitters. As a …

Beta Decay of68–74Niand Level Structure of Neutron-Rich Cu Isotopes

1998

The isotopes ${}^{68--74}\mathrm{Ni}$, of interest both for nuclear physics and astrophysics, have been produced in proton-induced fission of ${}^{238}\mathrm{U}$ and ionized in a laser ion guide coupled to an on-line mass separator. Their $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay was studied by means of $\ensuremath{\beta}$- $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$- $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ spectroscopy. Half-lives have been determined and production cross sections extracted. A partial level scheme is presented for ${}^{73}\mathrm{Cu}$ and additional levels for ${}^{71}\mathrm{Cu}$, providing evidence for a sharply lowered position of the $\ensuremath{\pi}{1f}_{5/2}$ orbital as occupancy of the $\ens…

The $\beta$-delayed one- and two-proton emission of $^{27}$S

2001

In an experiment performed at the GANIL LISE3 facility, radioactive 27S isotopes have been produced by projectile fragmentation of a 95 AMeV 36Ar primary beam. After selection by means of the LISE3 separator, the isotope of interest was implanted in a silicon-detector telescope where its half-life ( T 1/2 = 15.5(15) ms) and its main decay branches were measured.

Decay properties of neutron deficient Kr isotopes

1974

The decay properties of the neutron deficient isotopes73–77Kr and73–76Br have been studied at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The total decay energiesQ, as determined fromβ + singles orβ + -γ coincidence measurements, are compared with mass formulae.

Low-lying levels of201Hg from the decay of201Au

1972

The decay of 26.4-min201Au has been investigated using chemically separated sources and Ge(Li), Si(Li), plastic and Nal(Tl) detectors in different singles and coincidence arrangements. The β-disintegration energy was measured to be 1.27 ± 0.10 MeV. Thirteen γ-rays were observed to belong to this decay and the new levels at 543, 549.2, 552.8, 559.1, 605.7, 645.4, 732 and 1188 keV were established in201Hg, in addition to the three previously known excited states below 200 keV.

Levels in208Pb populated in the decay of208Tl(ThC″)

1969

Gamma rays in the disintegration of208Tl(ThC″) have been studied with Ge(Li)-Na I(Tl) anti-Compton and coincidence spectrometers. Several new transitions are reported most of which are placed in a decay scheme incorporating excited states in208Pb at 2,614.5, 3,197.6, 3,475.0, 3,708.3, 3,919.8, 3,960.9, 3,998.5, 4,125.3, 4,180.4, 4,296.1 and 4,480.0 keV. According to the present data, the recently reported intensity of 4.5±1.5% of beta groups feeding levels near 4.3 MeV is far too large.
