How long does it take to earn a higher education degree in Spain ?

International audience; The purpose of this paper is to identify the main determinants of time-to-degree in higher education. Our results use retrospective data on the full cohort of first-time entering students who embarked on short and long programs from one university in Spain and who were observed over an 8-year period ending in 2004. The descriptive analyses show that less than 40 percent of degree recipients are able to graduate within the minimum period of time. Duration models are estimated for different types of programs. Wage gaps between the public and private sectors in Spain

Based on data from the last household survey conducted by the Instituto Nacional de Estatistica in 1990-91, we estimate separate earnings equations by sector of employment and gender, treating the choice of employment sector as endogenous. From these results we compare the wage-generating process for each subgroup and identify the returns to human capital of males and females working in the public and private sectors. The purpose of this paper is to analyze engagement at work among public primary school directors and to investigate the impact of school heads' management style on teachers' behavior at work, in a developing country. Based on data from the Household Survey conducted by INE in 1990-1991, we examine private educational expenditures in Andalusian Region. First, we look at the educational family budgets from a descrittive point of view. Then, we fit different econometrics expenditures models to analyse the behaviour of Andalusian families in the field of education.

La demande d'éducation post-obligatoire des familles paysannes

National audience; En dépit d'une augmentation sensible au cours des dernières années, la demande d'éducation post-obligatoire des familles paysannes reste aujourd'hui encore relativement modeste par rapport à celles des autres catégories sociales. L'auteur explique ici la demande d'éducation secondaire des familles paysannes à partir d'un modèle de comportement qui prend en compte certaines des caractéristiques de production des exploitations agricoles. Le test empirique du modèle est effectué sur les données départementales de scolarisation des enfants de cultivateurs âgés de 16 à 18 ans.

Organization and efficiency of education systems : some empirical findings

International audience; Using a sample of countries chosen for their similar level of development, this article shows the extent to which the organisation of primary and secondary education differs from one country to another, notably with respect to the way in which systems differentiate and select pupils for specialised curricula. It also explores the question of whether an education system that sorts pupils at a very early age is more cost-effective than a system that does not sort pupils during compulsory education. Educacion y agricultura a tiempo parcial

The aim of this paper is to describe the phenomenon of part-time agriculture in the contemporany Spain, and to present a model explaining the allocation of farmers' work time between various activities. In the theorical framework developped here the work decisions are determined by the caractéristics of the agricultural production process, by the farmer's comparative advantage to participate in the labor market, and the amount of his stock of human capital. The empirical verification of the model is based on 1982 provincial data wich allow us to define two complementary indices of farmers' labor supply.

Este artículo presenta los principales temas abordados por los economistas de la educación a lo largo de los últimos cincuenta años. Después de recordar brevemente los antecedentes de la disciplina, se describen las aportaciones teóricas y empíricas realizadas a raíz del desarrollo de la teoría del capital humano, que es el fundamento de la economía de la educación. Más allá de los trabajos que tratan de los efectos externos de la educación, el artículo repasa también las principales aportaciones efectuadas en el análisis de los sistemas de enseñanza y en la evaluación de las políticas educativas.

Benefit Incidence Analysis in Education

07103; The standard benefit incidence algebra generally produces biased estimates of the distribution of public spending on education when students from poor and rich families are enrolled in schools that receive different levels of public spending per student. Except in very rare instances, removing these biases entails combining several sources of information in order to evaluate how unit spending varies across different population groups.
