The effect of time on physiological changes in eel Anguilla anguilla, induced by lindane.

Abstract 1. 1. Eel were exposed to a sublethal concentration of lindane (0.335 ppm) for 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr. 2. 2. Concentrations of glycogen, glucose, lactate, pyruvate and lipids were determined in gill tissue after lindane exposure. 3. 3. Gill glycogen descreased and glucose levels increased at 6 hr of treatment, lactate and pyruvate concentration increased between 6 and 48 hr. Total lipid values decreased between 6 and 24 hr; thereafter, the levels increased up to 72 hr of exposure. 4. 4. Clear changes were found in all parameters tested in gill tissues. The observed effects of lindane on metabolism in fish are discussed in relation to acute stress syndrome.

A large number of studies on the biological effects of oil pollution in the aquatic environment deal with the effects of whole crude or refined oils or their water-soluble fractions. However, low boiling, aromatic hydrocarbons, which are probably the most toxic constituents of oil, have until now not been examined in sufficient detail. Toluene, benzene and xylene, constitute a major component of various oils. They may be readily lost by weathering but are toxic in waters that are relatively stagnant and are chronically polluted. Lindane-induced changes in carbohydrate metabolism in Anguilla anguilla

Abstract 1. Anguilla anguilla (L.) was exposed to a sublethal concentration of 0.167 ppm (0.25 of the 96-hr lc 50 ) of lindane for 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr. 2. Changes in glycogen, glucose, pyruvate and lactate contents of liver and muscle after lindane exposure, were studied. 3. Muscle and liver glycogen levels decreased significantly during the exposure time. Muscle glucose values increased but on the other hand we found a decrease in those of liver. 4. Muscle and liver pyruvate content increased as did lactate levels in both tissues. 5. The observed effects of lindane on carbohydrate metabolism in fish are discussed in relation to acute stress syndrome.

The effects of chronic exposure of the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus to the toxicants lindane and 3,4-dichloroaniline (DCA), were evaluated. The parameters used to determine the toxicity on these compounds were the age-specific and fertility, and the demographic parameters: intrinsic rate of natural increase (r), generation time (T), net reproductive rate (Ro), reproductive value (Vx) and life expectancy (eo). All the demographic parameters studied decreased with increasing toxicant concentrations. The use of life tables techniques with B. calyciflorus as a test method for the determination of chronic toxicity of xenobiotics is discussed.

Pesticide Effects on Eel Metabolism

Previous works on endosulfan eel toxicology in this laboratory demonstrated that 0.041 mg/liter of endosulfan was the 50% lethal concentration of 96 hr exposure. Eels of species Anguilla anguilla were exposed to two sublethal endosulfan concentrations: 8.2 μg/liter (1/5 LC50) and 4.1 μg/liter (1/10 LC50), and the experiment was done at different exposure times: 12, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr. Muscle glycogen content decreased significantly (P < 0.05) at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr exposure to 8.2 μg/liter pesticide; levels did not decline at any time when animals were exposed to 4.1 μg/liter. Degradation and acute toxicity of Methidathion and Trichlorfon onProcambarus clarkii,in experimental conditions

Routine applications of organophosphate pesticides may adversely affect many nontarget organisms. Static toxicities in mature crayfish Procambarus clarkii were determined, in laboratory, for two organophosphate insecticides using 24, 48, 72 and 96‐h static tests. Three groups of 10 crayfish were exposed to 0.75 to 6 ppm for Trichlorfon and 0.2 to 0.9 ppm for Methidathion. The 24 to 96‐h LC50 values for Trichlorfon and Methidathion were from 5.14–0.99 ppm and 0.73–0.28 ppm respectively. Chronic toxicity of diazinon todaphnia magna:Effects on survival, reproduction and growth

The sublethal effect of 0.15, 0.18, 0.22, 0.25 and 0.30 μg/L diazinon on the survival, reproduction and growth of D. magna was monitored for 21 days. Neonates (≤ 24 h) were obtained from the stock cultures and raised individually in 50 mL glass beakers. All daphnids were transfered every other day to a new beaker containing fresh medium, food and the appropriate pesticide concentration. Due to their widespread distribution and toxic nattwe pesticides may have a serious impact on the aquatic environment and exert adverse effects on the associated organisms. Acute bioassay tests have been used to determine the actual impact of various pesticides on aquatic life. Static acute toxicity tests provide rapid and reproductible concentration-response curves for estimating toxic effects of chemicals on aquatic organisms. These tests provide a data base for determining relative toxicity to a variety of species.

Assessment of the toxicity of a pesticide with a two-generation reproduction test using Daphnia magna.

Abstract Daphnia magna (F 0 generation) were exposed during 21 days to different diazinon concentrations. Offspring (animals from the first and third brood: F 1 (1st) and F 1 (3rd), respectively) were transferred to a free pesticide medium during a 21-day recovery period. The algae Nannochloris oculata (5×10 5 cells/ml) were used as food. Demographic parameters of Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas (Rotifers) exposed to sublethal endosulfan concentrations

The effects of sublethal levels of endosulfan (0, 1, 1.5, 2.5 and 3.3 mg 1−1) on the demography of the rotifer Brachionus calyciorus were studied. Life expectancy at birth (e o), net reproductive rate (Ro), generation time (T) and intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) were significant differentes between blank controls and controls with acetone. The effective endosulfan concentration at which a given parameter value was reduced to 50% of the controls (EC50) was calculated for life expectancy.

The present communication deals with the effect of diazinon (0.042 mg/L) on the energy metabolism of the european eel Anguilla anguilla. Analysis of various parameters such as glycogen, lactate and glucose was made on different eel tissues after 6, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr of diazinon exposure. Liver and muscle glycogen content decreased significantly (p < 0.05) from 6 to 96 hr pesticide exposure. Mean blood glucose values were elevated significantly after exposure to this sublethal diazinon concentration. Abstract 1. Rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus were exposed to endosulfan and diazinon to determine the effect on nitration and ingestion rates. 2. The experiments were carried out with the algae Nannochloris oculata in a density of 5 × 105 cell/ml. 3. Rates of filtration and ingestion were decreased significantly at sublethal concentrations of pesticide tested after 5 hr exposure. 4. The effective concentration at which filtration and ingestion rates were reduced to 50% of those in controls ( ec 50) were calculated for both toxicants.

Acute toxicity and bioaccumulation of endosulfan in rotifer (Brachionus calyciflorus).

Abstract 1. 1. The acute toxicity of endosulfan was determined for the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus . 2. 2. The mean 24 hr lc 50 value for endosulfan was 5.15 ppm with a coefficient of variation of 14.7%. 3. 3. Rotifers were exposed at two sublethal concentrations (1.5–2.0 ppm) of endosulfan for bioaccumulation experiments, for an exposure time of 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr. The rotifers were fed with Nannochloris oculata (5 × 10 5 cell/ml). 4. 4. The highest accumulation of endosulfan was found 24 hr after the start of the exposure to 1.5 ppm of the toxicant. A steady-state concentration in rotifer was reached between 24–48 hr, followed by a gradual decrease until 96 hr.

Effects of diazinon exposure on cholinesterase activity in different tissues of European eel (Anguilla anguilla).

Cholinesterase (ChE) activity was measured in brain, plasma, and whole eye of Anguilla anguilla experimentally exposed to a sublethal concentration of 0.042 mg/liter (0.50 of the 96-hr LC50) of the organophosphorous pesticide diazinon. Whole eye was the tissue which revealed higher values of ChE activity (8.17 micromol/min/g) in nonexposed animals. Brain, plasma, and whole eye ChE activity of A. anguilla was inhibited at 6, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr of diazinon exposure. Pesticide induced significant inhibitory effects on the ChE activity of this species ranging from >70% inhibition in brain tissue to >90% in plasma samples.
