Power profiles in multifocal contact lenses with variable multifocal zone

BACKGROUND The power profile of multifocal contact lenses has been demonstrated to report important information that could be used during the fitting process. The aim of this work is to describe the power profile of a recent set of gas permeable multifocal contact lenses as a function of the pupil radius. METHODS The measured multifocal contact lenses have a centre-distance design, and are available with five distance-vision diameters (XS, S, M, L and XL) and two different additions: Type A (up to +2.00 D) and Type B (up to +2.50 D). Amplitude, Latency, and Peak Velocity in Accommodation and Disaccommodation Dynamics

The aim of this work was to ascertain whether there are differences in amplitude, latency, and peak velocity of accommodation and disaccommodation responses when different analysis strategies are used to compute them, such as fitting different functions to the responses or for smoothing them prior to computing the parameters. Accommodation and disaccommodation responses from four subjects to pulse changes in demand were recorded by means of aberrometry. Evaluation of the iridocorneal angle with accommodation using optical coherence tomography

The changes in the iridocorneal angle structure during accommodation are assessed by means of anterior segment optical coherence tomography. Thirteen right eyes were included in the study. The device used for the measurement was the Visante® omni system. The stimuli were set up at different vergences (0.0 D, -1.5 D, and -3.0 D). The angle opening distance 500 and 750, the trabecular iris space area 500 and 750, and the scleral spur angle parameters were assessed at the nasal and temporal regions. Accommodation is controlled by the action of the ciliary muscle and mediated primarily by parasympathetic input through postganglionic fibers that originate from neurons in the ciliary and pterygopalatine ganglia. Repeatability of in-vitro optical quality measurements of intraocular lenses with a deflectometry technique effect of the toricity

Aim To evaluate the repeatability of an optical device for measuring the Zernike coefficients of toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) and assess whether its toricity has any impact in its repeatability. Methods An experienced technician used the NIMO TR1504 to measure the Zernike coefficients 30 times for an aperture of 4.50 mm for all lenses included. There is more to accommodation of the eye than simply minimizing retinal blur

Eyes of children and young adults change their optical power to focus nearby objects at the retina. But does accommodation function by trial and error to minimize blur and maximize contrast as is generally accepted? Three experiments in monocular and monochromatic vision were performed under two conditions while aberrations were being corrected. In the first condition, feedback was available to the eye from both optical vergence and optical blur. In the second, feedback was only available from target blur. Accommodation was less precise for the second condition, suggesting that it is more than a trial-and-error function. Optical vergence itself seems to be an important cue for accommodation.

Opto-mechanical artificial eye with accommodative ability.

The purpose of this study was to describe the design and characterization of a new opto-mechanical artificial eye (OMAE) with accommodative ability. The OMAE design is based on a second-pass configuration where a small source of light is used at the artificial retina plane. A lens whose focal length can be changed electronically was used to add the accommodation capability. Three-dimensional object recognition by Fourier transform profilometry

2008

An automatic method for three-dimensional (3-D) shape recognition is proposed. It combines the Fourier transform profilometry technique with a real-time recognition setup such as the joint transform correlator (JTC). A grating is projected onto the object surface resulting in a distorted grating pattern. Since this pattern carries information about the depth and the shape of the object, their comparison provides a method for recognizing 3-D objects in real time. A two-cycle JTC is used for this purpose. Experimental results demonstrate the theory and show the utility of the new proposed method.

Two-dimensional optical wavelet decomposition with white-light illumination by wavelength multiplexing

We present a novel method for achieving in real time a two-dimensional optical wavelet decomposition with white-light illumination. The underlying idea of the suggested method is wavelength multiplexing. The information in the different wavelet components of an input object is transmitted simultaneously in different wavelengths and summed incoherently at the output plane. Recognition of polychromatic three-dimensional objects

We propose to use optical multichannel correlation in various chromatic systems to obtain a setup for recognition of polychromatic three-dimensional (3-D) objects based on Fourier-transform profilometry. Because red-green-blue color components are not able to split the luminance information of objects in a defined component, when the 3-D objects are brighter than the reference objects the correlation result gives false alarms. We demonstrate that it is possible to use different color spaces that can split luminance from chromatic information to yield adequate recognition of polychromatic 3-D objects. We show experimental results that prove the utility of the proposed method.

Shift- and scale-invariant recognition of contour objects with logarithmic radial harmonic filters.

The phase-only logarithmic radial harmonic (LRH) filter has been shown to be suitable for scale-invariant block object recognition. However, an important set of objects is the collection of contour functions that results from a digital edge extraction of the original block objects. These contour functions have a constant width that is independent of the scale of the original object. Detection and orientation evaluation for three-dimensional objects

This paper presents a novel method for detection and orientation evaluation for three-dimensional (3-D) objects based on range images. It is based on the calculation of the phase Fourier transform of the 3-D object range image. The method permits the estimation of the angular position of the object. It works with rotations around an axis perpendicular to the line of sight, although it exhibits a certain nodding tolerance. Simulated results demonstrate the ability of the new introduced method.

Accommodation in human eye models: a comparison between the optical designs of Navarro, Arizona and Liou-Brennan.

Extended scale-invariant pattern recognition with white-light illumination.

A previous method of obtaining scale-invariance detection with white-light illumination has been improved on. We were able to detect different scaled versions of the target up to a magnification factor equal to 2. We simultaneously detected several versions in the same scene, because each scale factor is codified in a different wavelength. Rotation-invariant optical recognition of three-dimensional objects.

An automatic method for rotation-invariant three-dimensional (3-D) object recognition is proposed. The method is based on the use of 3-D information contained in the deformed fringe pattern obtained when a grating is projected onto an object’s surface. The proposed method was optically implemented by means of a two-cycle joint transform correlator. Target localization in the three-dimensional space by wavelength multiplexing.

2002

A method to localize a target in the three-dimensional space is presented. Each different position of the target on the depth axis produces, when captured with a CCD camera, an image of a different size on its sensor plane. The size of this image depends only on the distance between the target and the camera. The use of a white light optical correlator that gives us a different response depending on the scale of the input image permits us to know the depth position of the particular target. The obtained results demonstrate the utility of the newly proposed method.
