Testing the effects of pre-processing on voxel based morphometry analysis
Voxel based morphometry (VBM) is an automated analysis technique which allows voxel-wise comparison of mainly grey-matter volumes between two magnetic resonance images (MRI). Two main analysis processes in VBM are possible. One is cross-sectional data analysis, where one group is compared with another to depict see the regions in the brain, which show changes in their grey-matter volume. Second is longitudinal data analysis, where MRIs, taken at different time points, are compared to see the regions in the brain that show changes in their grey matter volume for one time point with respect to another time point. Detection of steering direction using EEG recordings based on sample entropy and time-frequency analysis.
Monitoring driver's intentions beforehand is an ambitious aim, which will bring a huge impact on the society by preventing traffic accidents. Hence, in this preliminary study we recorded high resolution electroencephalography (EEG) from 5 subjects while driving a car under real conditions along with an accelerometer which detects the onset of steering. Two sensor-level analyses, sample entropy and time-frequency analysis, have been implemented to observe the dynamics before the onset of steering. Clues to the nature of the impacting bodies from platinum-group elements (rhenium and gold) in borehole samples from the Clearwater East crater (Canada) and the Boltysh impact crater (Ukraine)
— Seven large (10 g) impact melt rock samples from boreholes from the Boltysh impact crater (Ukraine) and six samples from the East Clearwater crater (Canada) were analyzed for Os, Ir, Ru, Rh, Pd, Re and Au by the nickel sulfide technique in combination with neutron activation. Earlier analyses of Clearwater East impact melt rocks have shown that they are strongly enriched in Ir, Os, Pd and Re. In this work, I confirm earlier findings and demonstrate similarly high enrichments of Rh and Ru. The average Os/Ir, Ru/Ir, Pd/Ir, Rh/Ir and Ru/Rh ratios of the melt rock samples from Clearwater East are CI-chondritic and yield an average Ir content of 25.2 ± 6.5 ng/g relative to an average upper cru…
Are high-temperature fractionations in the solar nebula preserved in highly siderophile element systematics of the Earth's mantle?
The relative abundances of the highly siderophile elements (HSE) Os, Ir, Ru, Pt, Rh, and Pd in relatively pristine lherzolites differ from solar abundance ratios and are several orders of magnitude higher than predicted for equilibrium distribution between metal/silicate (core-mantle). The samples are characterized by a mean Ca/Al ratio of 1.18 ± 0.09 σM and a mean Ca/Si ratio of 0.10 ± 0.01 σM, overlapping with a mean Ca/Al of 1.069 ± 0.044 σM and a mean Ca/Si of 0.081 ± 0.023 σM found in chondrites (Wasson and Kallemeyn 1988). Constraints on Earth accretion deduced from noble metals in the oceanic mantle
If the Earth's mantle were in equilibrium with its core, the mantle would contain three orders of magnitude less of the noble metals (platinum-group elements Pt, Os, Ir, Ru, Pd and Rh, plus Au and Re) than are observed. An explanation put forward to account for this disparity has been that the last 1% of the Earth's accretion occurred after the iron-rich core had separated from the mantle1,2. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been employed to track the course and disease progression in patients with MS. Highly siderophile element geochemistry of the Earth's mantle: new data for the Lanzo (Italy) and Ronda (Spain) orogenic peridotite bodies
Abstract Nine plagioclase/spinel lherzolites from the Lanzo (Italy) and Ronda (Spain) peridotite bodies were analysed for Re, Os, Ir, Ru, Rh, Pd, and Au using a high-precision instrumental neutron activation (INA) procedure after NiS fire assay. Our data conform with previous observations that orogenic lherzolite massifs sampled domains of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) displaying a characteristic enrichment of Ru, Rh and Pd (i.e. the light platinum group elements; PGEs) over Os and Ir. Determination of Platinum-Group Elements (PGE) from catalytic converters in soil by means of docimasy and INAA.
The nickelsulfide fire assay (docimasy) for the enrichment of platinum-group elements (PGEs) has been modified for the use with small samples and combined with instrumental neutron-activation analysis (INAA). This procedure has been applied to the determination of PGEs exhausted from catalytic converters and deposited in soil near the Wiesbadener Kreuz (highway A3, Frankfurt-Koln). Our results show a considerable enhancement of the Pt (up to 330 ng/g), Pd (6.6 ng/g) and Rh (7.5 ng/g) contents close to the highway.
Highly siderophile elements (PGE, Re and Au) in mantle xenoliths from the West Eifel volcanic field (Germany)
Abstract Mantle peridotite xenoliths ranging in modal composition between fertile lherzolites and modally metasomatized harzburgites, and magmatic pyroxenite xenoliths from the West Eifel and Vogelsberg volcanic fields (Germany) have been analyzed for their whole rock major and minor elements, six platinum-group elements PGE (PGE: Os, Ir, Pt, Ru, Rh, Pd), Re and Au, rare earth elements (REE), and several other trace elements (e.g., As, Ta). The bulk rock Ir concentrations range from 0.23 to 9.07 ng/g (total PGE contents range between 43.2 ng/g), exceeding the range previously found in mantle rocks. The Os isotopic and highly siderophile element (HSE) concentration systematics of the upper mantle have been the focus of much recent interest. However, little systematic study has addressed the combined HSE and Os isotopes in mantle rocks from MOR ophiolites. The Ligurian ophiolites in northern Italy represent an important class of ophiolites representing, like Zabargad or the Galicia margin, crust with clear ocean ridge affinity floored by older mantle with arguably more continental affinities [Rampone et al., J. Highly siderophile elements (Re, Os, Ir, Ru, Rh, Pd, Au) in impact melts from three European impact craters (Sääksjärvi, Mien, and Dellen): Clues to the nature of the impacting bodies
Twenty-two large (10 g) impact melt samples from three Scandinavian craters (i.e., Saaksjarvi, Finland; and Mien and Dellen, Sweden) were analyzed for highly siderophile elements (HSE: platinum group elements, Rh, and Au) by the nickel sulfide technique in combination with neutron activation. The ten impact melt samples from Saaksjarvi are enriched in Ir and other highly siderophile elements (Ir = 2.48 ± 0.73 ng/g) relative to average upper crust concentrations (0.03 ± 0.02 ng/g Ir). The twelve Dellen and Mien samples are marginally enriched in Ir (0.48 ± 0.23 ng/g for Dellen, and 0.37 ± 0.23 ng/g for Mien).
