Letter to the Editor regarding the paper by Aurilio et al., A meta-analysis of oestrogen receptor, progesterone receptor and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 discordance between primary breast cancer and metastases
Sir,We have read with great interest the article in press ofAurilio et al., A meta-analysis of oestrogen receptor, pro-gesterone receptor and human epidermal growth factorreceptor 2 discordance between primary breast cancerand metastases (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ejca.2003.10.004), which will appear in Eur J Cancer. In the paper, the Authors have performed a meta-analysis of the stud-ies published in the literature concerning the discor-dance rate in oestrogen receptor (ER), progesteronereceptor (PgR) and HER2 status between primarytumour and corresponding relapse. It is well known thata considerable controversy concerns the issue of hor-mone receptors (HRs) expression as well as HER2 sta…
Peripapillary staphyloma associated with morning glory anomaly,
We report a patient with concomitant occurrence of peripapillary staphyloma and morning glory anomaly. The morning glory anomaly presented with an optic nerve head with oblique entrance, located on one side of the peripapillary staphyloma, giving an unusually asymmetric and previously undescribed appearance to the abnormality. The optical coherence tomography provided useful information about the shape and deepness of the peripapillary staphyloma and disclosed a retinal detachment not appreciated ophthalmoscopically.
A case-control study on risk factors for nuclear, cortical and posterior subcapsular cataract: The Casteldaccia Eye Study
Purpose: To investigate risk factors for nuclear, cortical and posterior subcapsular age-related cataract. Methods: A case-control study was carried out on subjects aged 40 years and older, living in Casteldaccia, Sicily. Twenty-seven potential risk factors were investigated. Nuclear, cortical and posterior subcapsular opacities of the lens were classified according to the Lens Opacities Classification System II. Subjects with advanced lens opacities represented the cases, while an identical number of subjects without or with early cataract, matched for sex and age, were recruited as controls from within the same population. Results: Univariate analysis showed that myopia and iris atrophy w…
Variations in central corneal thickness during the menstrual cycle in women.
PURPOSE: We report changes in the central corneal thickness during various phases of the menstrual cycle. METHODS: We recruited 16 healthy women of reproductive age and measured the central corneal thickness at 3 points in their menstrual cycle, beginning on days 1 to 3 and again at ovulation and at the end of the cycle (days 27-32). Ovulation was determined with a test that determines the peak of luteinizing hormone in the urine. RESULTS: We found that the central cornea was thinnest at the beginning of the cycle (mean = 536 microm). Corneal thickness increased at ovulation (mean = 549 microm) and at the end of the cycle (mean = 559 microm). The difference in corneal thickness was statisti…
Indocyanine green in congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium
To report a case of congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium followed up for 7 years showing features not previously reported. A complete fundus examination including fluorescein angiography was performed at first examination and at follow-up. The area of congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium presented morphologic changes, showing enlargement of the lesion on one side associated with partial regression on another side. In addition, the indocyanine green angiography findings revealed that this test was more useful than fluorescein angiography to delineate the real boundaries of the lesion and disclosed hypofluorescent areas inside the main lesion that were …
