Groups with soluble minimax conjugate classes of subgroups

2008

A classical result of Neumann characterizes the groups in which each subgroup has finitely many conjugates only as central-by-finite groups. If $\mathfrak{X}$ is a class of groups, a group $G$ is said to have $\mathfrak{X}$-conjugate classes of subgroups if $G/core_G(N_G(H)) \in \mathfrak{X}$ for each subgroup $H$ of $G$. Here we study groups which have soluble minimax conjugate classes of subgroups, giving a description in terms of $G/Z(G)$. We also characterize $FC$-groups which have soluble minimax conjugate classes of subgroups.

GrailQuest and HERMES: hunting for gravitational wave electromagnetic counterparts and probing space-time quantum foam

2021

GrailQuest (Gamma-ray Astronomy International Laboratory for Quantum Exploration of Space-Time) is an ambitious astrophysical mission concept that uses a fleet of small satellites whose main objective is to search for a dispersion law for light propagation in vacuo. Within Quantum Gravity theories, different models for space-time quantization predict relative discrepancies of the speed of photons w.r.t. the speed of light that depend on the ratio of the photon energy to the Planck energy. This ratio is as small as 10-23 for photons in the γ- ray band (100 keV). Therefore, to detect this effect, light must propagate over enormous distances and the experiment must have extraordinary sensitivi…

Position paper on liver and kidney diseases from the Italian Association for the Study of Liver (AISF), in collaboration with the Italian Society of …

2021

Abstract Liver and kidney are strictly connected in a reciprocal manner, in both the physiological and pathological condition. The Italian Association for the Study of Liver, in collaboration with the Italian Society of Nephrology, with this position paper aims to provide an up-to-date overview on the principal relationships between these two important organs. A panel of well-recognized international expert hepatologists and nephrologists identified five relevant topics: 1) The diagnosis of kidney damage in patients with chronic liver disease; 2) Acute kidney injury in liver cirrhosis; 3) Association between chronic liver disease and chronic kidney disease; 4) Kidney damage according to dif…

The HERMES-Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder

2020

HERMES-TP/SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder) is a constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting simple but innovative X-ray detectors, characterized by a large energy band and excellent temporal resolution, and thus optimized for the monitoring of Cosmic High Energy transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts and the electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Wave Events, and for the determination of their positions. The projects are funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and by the Italian Space Agency, and by the European Union Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under Grant Agreement No. 821896. Timing techniques applied to distributed modular high-energy astronomy: the H.E.R.M.E.S. project

2021

The HERMES-TP/SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites -- Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder) is an in-orbit demonstration of the so-called distributed astronomy concept. Conceived as a mini-constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting a new miniaturized detector, HERMES-TP/SP aims at the detection and accurate localisation of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts. The large energy band, the excellent temporal resolution and the wide field of view that characterize the detectors of the constellation represent the key features for the next generation high-energy all-sky monitor with good localisation capabilities that will play a pivotal role in the future …

The scientific payload on-board the HERMES-TP and HERMES-SP CubeSat missions

2021

HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) Technological and Scientific pathfinder is a space borne mission based on a LEO constellation of nano-satellites. The 3U CubeSat buses host new miniaturized detectors to probe the temporal emission of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). Fast transient localization, in a field of view of several steradians and with arcmin-level accuracy, is gained by comparing time delays among the same event detection epochs occurred on at least 3 nano-satellites. With a launch date in 2022, HERMES transient monitoring represents a keystone capability to complement the next generation of gravitational wave experiments. In t…

The probability that $x^m$ and $y^n$ commute in a compact group

2013

In a recent article [K.H. Hofmann and F.G. Russo, The probability that $x$ and $y$ commute in a compact group, Math. Proc. Cambridge Phil. Soc., to appear] we calculated for a compact group $G$ the probability $d(G)$ that two randomly picked elements $x, y\in G$ satisfy $xy=yx$, and we discussed the remarkable consequences on the structure of $G$ which follow from the assumption that $d(G)$ is positive. In this note we consider two natural numbers $m$ and $n$ and the probabilty $d_{m,n}(G)$ that for two randomly selected elements $x, y\in G$ the relation $x^my^n=y^nx^m$ holds. The situation is more complicated whenever $n,m>1$. If $G$ is a compact Lie group and if its identity component $G_…

Isoclinism in probability of commuting n-tuples

2009

Strong restrictions on the structure of a group $G$ can be given, once that it is known the probability that a randomly chosen pair of elements of a finite group $G$ commutes. Introducing the notion of mutually commuting n-tuples for compact groups (not necessary finite), the present paper generalizes the probability that a randomly chosen pair of elements of $G$ commutes. We shall state some results concerning this new concept of probability which has been recently treated in [3]. Furthermore a relation has been found between the notion of mutually commuting n-tuples and that of isoclinism between two arbitrary groups.

A generalization of groups with many almost normal subgroups

2010

A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is called almost normal in $G$ if it has finitely many conjugates in $G$. A classic result of B. H. Neumann informs us that $|G : Z(G)|$ is finite if and only if each $H$ is almost normal in $G$. Starting from this result, we investigate the structure of a group in which each non- finitely generated subgroup satisfies a property, which is weaker to be almost normal.

On some recent investigations of probability in group theory

2010

We describe some recent contributions on the probability of commuting pairs, introduced by P. Erdos, W. Gustafson and P. Turan around 1968 and 1973. Both combinatorial methods and character theory have significant application in this context and we illustrate some standard techniques and strategies, once generalizations of the probability of commuting pairs want to be studied. The importance of the subject is emphasized in some remarks and open questions, which reformulate some classical conjectures in group theory via a probabilistic approach.
