Kinetic analysis of functional images: The case for a practical approach to performance prediction

We present the first parallel medical application for the analysis of dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) images together with a practical performance model. The parallel application may improve the diagnosis for a patient (e. g. in epilepsy surgery) because it enables the fast computation of parametric images on a pixed level as opposed to the traditionally used region of interest (ROI) approach which is applied to determine an average parametric value for a particular anatomic region of the brain. Abstract BACKGROUND: Tumed sequential treatment with fludarabine/cyclophosphamide/rituximab (FC-R) followed by Y-90 ibritumomab tiuxetan (IT) radioimmunotherapy may improve progression-free survival in patients (pts) with CD20+ NHL. However, even unpretreated pts submitted to four to six cycles of a fludarabine-containing combination and then IT at an Y-90 activity of 15 MBq/kg will experience severe prolonged, transfusion-dependent and only partially reversible pancytopenia, thus limiting its use in a non-curative setting (Jurczak et al., ASH 2005). Fixation suppression of optokinetic nystagmus modulates cortical visual-vestibular interaction.

Water activation positron emission tomography and statistical group analysis were used to evaluate differences in activation-deactivation patterns during small-field visual motion stimulation, eliciting rightward optokinetic nystagmus and its fixation suppression in 12 healthy volunteers. Three patients with the clinical diagnosis of Wallenberg's syndrome caused by acute unilateral ischemic infarctions, which included the vestibular nucleus in the medullary brain stem and afferent vestibular pathways, were examined by positron emission tomography (PET) during caloric vestibular stimulation. Thalamic infarctions cause side-specific suppression of vestibular cortex activations.
