Characterisation of NO production and consumption: new insights by an improved laboratory dynamic chamber technique

Biogenic NOx emissions from natural and anthropogenically influenced soils are currently estimated to amount to 9 Tg a−1, hence a significant fraction of global NOx emissions (45 Tg a−1). During the last three decades, a large number of field measurements have been performed to quantify biogenic NO emissions. To study biogenic NO emissions as a function of soil moisture, soil temperature, and soil nutrients, several laboratory approaches have been developed to estimate local/regional NO emissions by suitable upscaling. This study presents an improved and automated laboratory dynamic chamber system (consisting of six individual soil chambers) for investigation and quantification of all quant…

Worldwide comparison of ovarian cancer survival: Histological group and stage at diagnosis (CONCORD-2)

Abstract Objective Ovarian cancer comprises several histological groups with widely differing levels of survival. We aimed to explore international variation in survival for each group to help interpret international differences in survival from all ovarian cancers combined. We also examined differences in stage-specific survival. Methods The CONCORD programme is the largest population-based study of global trends in cancer survival, including data from 60 countries for 695,932 women (aged 15–99years) diagnosed with ovarian cancer during 1995–2009. We defined six histological groups: type I epithelial, type II epithelial, germ cell, sex cord-stromal, other specific non-epithelial and non-sp…

Preparation methods to optimize the performance of sensor discs for fast chemiluminescence ozone analyzers.

Fast ozone (O(3)) measurements (1-50 Hz) in the atmosphere are required for airborne studies and for the measurement of ground-based O(3) fluxes by the eddy covariance technique. Fast response analyzers, based on heterogeneous chemiluminescence, need dye coated sensor discs on which the chemiluminescence is generated. In this study, we present three new preparation methods for those sensor discs. Currently available sensor discs exhibit a fast temporal decay of sensitivity, resulting in short duty times which is troublesome for many field applications. To produce sensor discs that provide more stable signals over time, three dyes and nine energy transfer reagents were tested (as well as dif…
