Abstract ABSTRACT Genetic hemochromatosis is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by iron overload and a variety of clinical manifestations such as liver cirrhosis and arthropathy. It is the most common genetic disease of northern European populations. The principal gene responsible for hereditary hemochromatosis, designated HFE, is located on chromosome 6 in the HLA region. Second harmonic generation in coupled LiNbO3 waveguides by reverse-proton exchange

We demonstrate second harmonic generation of a near-infrared pump in a nonlinearly coupled system formed by longitudinally uniform proton- and reverse-proton-exchanged LiNbO/sub 3/ planar waveguides. Phase- and mode-matched transverse electric (TE/sub 0/) frequency doubling into transverse magnetic higher order guided modes is achieved through temperature control, in agreement with the model.

Bi-color spatial solitons in linearly uncoupled planar waveguides

We report on the observation of spatial optical simultons in a novel geometry consisting of two partially overlapped, linearly uncoupled planar waveguides in lithium niobate obtained by reverse proton exchange. Two orthogonally polarized modes are coupled through an off-diagonal tensor element of the quadratic nonlinearity, giving rise to second harmonic generation and mutual trapping via cascading. This phenomenon demonstrates a balance between diffraction and self-focusing for two orthogonal modes of different waveguides, and occurs at room temperature in longitudinally uniform waveguides.

Heart failure and chronic kidney disease in a registry of internal medicine wards

Background: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between heart failure (HF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) in tertiary care centers using the clinical records of patients enrolled in internal medicine departments.Patients and methods: We used the clinical records of 1380 elderly patients to identify patients with a history of HF and CKD using admission ICD codes and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) formulas. Magnitude and strength of such associations were investigated by univariable and multivariable analysis.Results: Of the 1380 patients enrolled, 27.9% had HF (age 80 ± 7, BMI 27 ± 6 kg/m2) and 17.4% CKD (age 81 ± 7, BMI 26.8 ± 6 kg/m2). Gluon Polarisation in the Nucleon and Longitudinal Double Spin Asymmetries from Open Charm Muoproduction

The gluon polarisation in the nucleon has been determined by detecting charm production via D0 meson decay to charged K and pi in polarised muon scattering off a longitudinally polarised deuteron target. The data were taken by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN between 2002 and 2006 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.8 fb^-1. The dominant underlying process of charm production is the photon-gluon fusion to a cc-bar pair. A leading order QCD approach gives an average gluon polarisation of (Delta g/g)_x= -0.49 +- 0.27(stat) +- 0.11(syst) at a scale mu^2 ~ 13 (GeV/c)^2 and at an average gluon momentum fraction (x) ~ 0.11. Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with a substantial risk of thromboembolism and mortality, significantly reduced by oral anticoagulation. Adherence to guidelines may lower the risks for both all cause and cardiovascular (CV) deaths. Methods: Our objective was to evaluate if antithrombotic prophylaxis according to the 2012 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines is associated to a lower rate of adverse outcomes.
