Since the 19th century, many proposals have been made regarding the boundaries of the territory of the civitas Aeduorum. Although there is general agreement on many geographic sectors, there are still major discrepancies of opinion, principally in the regions of Autissiodurum / Auxerre and Alesia. The religious epigraphy of the Early Empire, in particular the use of a specific formulary, seems to demonstrate a single religious (and political) community in these regions, which would thus have all belonged to the civitas Aeduorum in the 2nd and 3rd centuries.

Sanctuaries and religious practices from the 3rd to 5th c. AD in central-eastern Gaul (Lugdunensis I and Maxima Sequanorum)

The available documentation (archaeological data from former and new excavations, written sources) regarding the eastern areas of Gaul is quite copious, offering the possibility to get on main questions about the evolution of the traditional paganism between the Early Empire and Late Antiquity. This collation and classification of sources allows, in particular, to put forward a rather precise phasing of events concerning the changes in cult practices as well about the transformation of equipments and cult sites.

In 2011, an archaeological evaluation was carried out in the centre of the Roman city of Augustodunum (Autun) on a plot of over 1 ha. This operation afforded the opportunity to explore parts of two insulae along the main street, the so-called cardo maximus, an area that has benefited from recent advances in knowledge. The first insula hosts a high-status domus strongly resembling those of "Balbius Iassus" and the "Étui d’Or", excavated in the vicinity in the 1970s; the second, addressed in this paper, contains the remains of a vast monumental complex covering approximately 900 m2. Ce volume rassemble les actes des troisièmes rencontres consacrées à l'Antiquité tardive dans l'Est de la Gaule (ATEG). Ses quinze articles proposent une approche régionale des débats autour de la pertinence du concept d'État pour appréhender la documentation archéologique et textuelle antique. La démarche est pluridisciplinaire et menée à plusieurs échelles.
