Gadolinium accumulation after contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging: Which implications in patients with Crohn's disease?
Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the bowel, characterized by an alternation of remission and relapse phases, leading to a progressive intestinal damage with loss of function. Magnetic resonance enterography has been widely used in the past for the evaluation of fistulizing disease, but its use increased over time, being considered helpful in different moments of disease course. Intravenous injection of Gadolinium-based contrast agents has been demonstrated to be crucial to assess mucosal inflammation, transmural involvement, and extraintestinal disease. Recently, Gadolinium accumulation in human tissues has been increasingly reported, although clinical implication…
Real-life effectiveness of ustekinumab in inflammatory bowel disease patients with concomitant psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis: An IG-IBD study
Abstract Background Few data exist regarding the effectiveness of ustekinumab in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients treated for concomitant psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. Aims to describe the outcomes of IBD patients who received subcutaneous ustekinumab through a dermatological or rheumatological prescription. Methods This multicenter, retrospective study included all IBD patients who were started on ustekinumab for concomitant active psoriasis/ psoriatic arthritis, irrespective of IBD activity. The primary endpoint was overall ustekinumab persistence, defined as the maintenance of therapy because of sustained clinical benefit for IBD. Results Seventy patients (64 Crohn’s disease…
Telemedicine and Remote Screening for COVID-19 in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients: Results From the SoCOVID-19 Survey
Abincol® (Lactobacillus plantarum LP01, Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02, Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01), an oral nutraceutical, pragmatic use in patients with chronic intestinal disorders.
Chronic intestinal disorders (CID), including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and diverticular disease (DD), are diseases that relapse episodes. There is evidence that patients with CID have intestinal dysbiosis, so probiotics may counterbalance the impaired microbiota. Therefore, the current survey evaluated the efficacy and safety of Abincol®,an oral nutraceuticalcontaining a probiotic mixture with Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 millions of living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01 (200 millions of living cells), in 3,460…

Activities related to inflammatory bowel disease management during and after the coronavirus disease 2019 lockdown in Italy: How to maintain standards of care
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Restructuring activities have been necessary during the lockdown phase of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Few data are available on the post-lockdown phase in terms of health-care procedures in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) care, and no data are available specifically from IBD units. We aimed to investigate how IBD management was restructured during the lockdown phase, the impact of the restructuring on standards of care and how Italian IBD units have managed post-lockdown activities. METHODS: A web-based online survey was conducted in two phases (April and June 2020) among the Italian Group for IBD affiliated units within the entire country. We inv…
Lactobacillus plantarum LP01, Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02, and Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01) in patients undergoing bowel preparation.
Bowel preparation (BP) for colonoscopy induces significantly changes in gut microbiota and elicit intestinal symptoms. Impaired microbiota causes an intestinal dysbiosis. Consequently, probiotics may counterbalance the disturbed microbiota after BP. The current survey evaluated the efficacy and safety of Abincol®,an oral nutraceuticalcontaining a probiotic mixture with Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 millions of living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01 (200 millions of living cells), in 2,979 outpatients (1,579 males and 1,400 females, mean age 56 years) undergoing BP. Patients took 1 stick/daily for 4 w…
Functional heartburn has more in common with functional dyspepsia than with non-erosive reflux disease.
Introduction: Functional dyspepsia and non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) are prevalent gastrointestinal conditions with accumulating evidence regarding an overlap between the two. Still, patients with NERD represent a very heterogeneous group and limited data on dyspeptic symptoms in various subgroups of NERD are available. Aim: To evaluate the prevalence of dyspeptic symptoms in patients with NERD subclassified by using 24 h impedance-pH monitoring (MII-pH). Methods: Patients with typical reflux symptoms and normal endoscopy underwent impedance-pH monitoring off proton pump inhibitor treatment. Oesophageal acid exposure time (AET), type of acid and non-acid reflux episodes, and symptom ass…
A 10-day levofloxacin-based therapy in patients with resistant infection: A controlled trial
Background & Aims: Antibiotic resistance is a major issue in anti– Helicobacter pylori treatment. This study was aimed at assessing the efficacy of 2 therapies in patients with resistant H pylori infection. Methods: Patients who had failed 1 or more eradication regimens underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and 2 antral and 2 corpus biopsy specimens were taken for histology and culture. Metronidazole, clarithromycin, and amoxicillin resistance were determined by E-test. Patients were randomly assigned to 2 therapies: 1 group received pantoprazole 40 mg, amoxicillin 1 g, levofloxacin 250 mg, all twice daily for 10 days, and the other group was treated with omeprazole 20 mg twice daily f…
Post-surgical intestinal dysbiosis: use of an innovative mixture (Lactobacillus plantarum LP01, Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02, Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01).
Abdominal surgery represents a high risk for hospital-acquired infections and complication that may compromise the surgery outcome. Patients with recent abdominal surgery have an intestinal dysbiosis. There is evidence that probiotics may counterbalance the impaired microbiota. Therefore, the current survey evaluated the efficacy and safety of Abincol®,an oral nutraceuticalcontaining a probiotic mixture with Lactobacillus plantarum LP01 (1 billion of living cells), Lactobacillus lactis subspecies cremoris LLC02 (800 millions of living cells), and Lactobacillus delbrueckii LDD01 (200 millions of living cells), in 612 outpatients (344 males and 268 females, mean age 58 years) undergoing diges…

An evaluation of the antireflux properties of sodium alginate by means of combined multichannel intraluminal impedance and pH-metry.
Summary Background : Alginate-based preparations act as mechanical antireflux barrier, which can reduce both acid and non-acid reflux events and limit the proximal migration of oesophageal refluxate. Aim : To evaluate all the above features with a novel technique, multichannel electrical impedance and pH-metry. Methods : Ten reflux patients underwent stationary impedancemetry and pH-metry after eating a refluxogenic meal. They were studied 1 h in basal conditions and 1 h after taking 10 mL of Gaviscon Advance. In both sessions, measurements were obtained in right lateral and supine decubitus. Results : Alginate preparation was able to decrease significantly (P < 0.05) the number of acid ref…
