International Bioethics Committees: Conditions for a Good Deliberation

One of the most relevant effects of bioethics emergence has been the spread of deliberative bodies on bioethics matters. Their features are very wide, depending upon the entity that creates them, their regional scope, the issues they deal with, the ruling strength of their agreements, etc. Among them, international bioethics committees are particularly relevant due to the huge impact of their work on global public opinion, as well as on the policies approved by governments all around the world. These bodies are presumed to adopt their decisions, as well as the other bioethics committees, after deliberating on facts and values (Gracia 2001).

Scientific production in bioethics in Spain through MEDLINE

The Principle of Respect for Human Vulnerability and Assisted Reproductive Technologies

The chapter tackles the assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), and the incorporation of two controversial procedures to increase the number of individuals who may satisfy their wish to have children: international commercial surrogacy and mitochondrial transfer. Both of them have an important point in common: the high degree of involvement within the reproduction process demanded to a different woman from the woman who will be the legal mother. In international surrogacy, a woman undergoes a baby gestation for another woman in a different country, who will be the legal mother since the baby is born. In mitochondrial transfer, a woman donates her eggs so that her mitochondria may be used…

From Eunomia to Paideia: The Educating Nature of Law

Education and Law are two of the institutions which most directly influence the configuration of the individual and of society. Furthermore, there is a close relationship between them in that each determines the development of the other. From their very beginnings, political and legal philosophy have asked what is Law, what is education and what should the relationship between them be. This chapter deals with the relationship between Law and education from this philosophical-practical perspective. It begins by illustrating the notable similarities between both and then goes on to address two questions: (1) whether Law should educate citizens in moral virtues; and (2) if the education of cit…

Short Form of Spanish Version of the WISC–IV for Intelligence Assessment in Elementary School Children

In educational settings, quick assessments of intelligence are often required to screen children with potential special needs. The WISC–IV is administered individually and takes between one and two hours to complete. Given its widespread use in Spain, a short-form of the Spanish version is likely to be of use to professionals. The goal of this research was to develop a short form of the WISC–IV that can be performed in approximately half an hour. Data obtained in 100 elementary school children were analyzed following the criteria of Resnick and Entin (1971). The results showed that the most accurate estimation of intelligence was achieved with a combination of the Vocabulary, Block Design,…

Ecological Justice in the Anthropocene: A Proposal

The power created by technoscience during the 20th century has turned human beings into global ecological agents. In the face of this challenge, unique in the history of humankind, there are three answers that have been proposed: to accelerate the process of human control over nature (technocratic paradigm); to revert the present situation to a previous stage in which nature recovers its independence from human beings (decrecentism); and to maintain the current system with some measures to solve the side effects (ecocapitalism). The technocratic paradigm does not recognize the value and limits of nature. Decrecentism ignores the duty of using technology to provide more dignified, decent lif…

Perceptual Priming and Reading Speed among Fourth Grade Children

AbstractThis study evaluated the perceptual priming in fourth grade primary school children using a word-fragment completion task. The children were classified into two categories according to their reading speed: high and low. Using several sub-scales of the WISC-IV, their working memory was measured, and their total IQ was estimated, in order to control for their effects on priming. The statistical analyses showed that children with high reading speed were significantly better at word-fragment completion and showed greater priming (p < .01); in other words, the prior processing of the words from which the fragments came produced a greater benefit in the performance of the word-fragment…
