Primary oral melanoma : a histopathological and immunohistochemical study of 22 cases of Latin America

2011

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of 22 cases of primary oral melanomas (OM). Study Design: Twenty two cases of primary oral melanoma were analyzed by description of their histopathological features and immunohistochemical study using the antibodies S-100, HMB-45, Melan-A and Ki-67. Results: The mean age was 58 years and 14 cases were female. The main affected sites were the hard palate, followed by the upper gingiva. Microscopically, 15 cases presented level III of invasion, 2 cases were amelanotic and 13 showed a mixed epithelioid and plasmacytoid or spindle cells composition. Some cases showed necrosis, perivascu…

Immunohistochemical expression of Skp2 protein in oral nevi and melanoma

2013

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the immunohistochemical expression of Skp2 protein in 38 oral nevi and 11 primary oral melanomas. Study Design: Expression of this ubiquitin protein was evaluated by immunohistochemistry in 49 oral melanocytic lesions, including 38 intramucosal nevi and 11 primary oral melanomas. The labeling index (LI) was assessed considering the percentage of cells expressing nuclear positivity out of the total number of cells, counting 1000 cells per slide. Results: Skp2 protein was rarely expressed in intramucosal nevi, in contrast to oral melanomas, which showed high levels of this protein. Conclusion: These results indicate that Skp2 protein may play a …

Peripheral odontogenic keratocyst: Report of two new cases and review of the literature

2020

Peripheral odontogenic keratocyst (POKC) is a rare soft tissue entity showing the same histological characteristics of odontogenic keratocyst. Herein, we report two cases of POKC affecting the gingiva/alveolar mucosa. Case 1. A 43-year-old female was referred for evaluation of a painless well-defined nodular, sessile, non-tender swelling in the right maxillary buccal gingiva. No radiological alterations were observed. The patient was submitted to excisional biopsy and histological diagnosis was POKC. There were no signs of local recurrence after a 4-year follow-up. Case 2. A 63-year-old female was referred for evaluation of a painless well-defined nodular, sessile, yellowish swelling in the…

Comparative expression of cyclooxygenase 2 and Ki67 in amelanotic and conventional oral melanomas

2020

Background Oral melanomas have some histopathological resemblance with its cutaneous counterpart; however, an aggressive behavior is more common in tumors that occur in the oral cavity. Several markers have been suggested as indicative of tumoral progression and aggressiveness, such as cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and Ki67. Material and Methods In this study, we have compared the expression of COX-2 and Ki67 in a series of amelanotic (n=7) and melanotic oral melanomas (n=22). The cases were selected from 4 pathology laboratories and submitted to the immunohistochemical (IHC) reactions. We analyzed the IHC staining based on a qualitative – using visual scores; and a computer-assisted method (qua…

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the masticator space in a pediatric patient

2017

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC) is a malignant soft-tissue neoplasm rarely described in the head and neck region of children and adolescents. We describe a case of EMC affecting the masticator space and a literature review. A 13-year-old boy who presented a large painless, diffuse mass causing progressive midfacial asymmetry of 6 months duration. Histopathological evaluation revealed a multinodular lesion, containing scattered round vacuolated tumor cells dispersed in an abundant myxoid stroma, separated by fibrous septae. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed positivity for vimentin, neuron-specific enolase, and chromogranin. The Ki-67 labelling index was 42%. The patient was tre…

Angiomyolipoma of the upper lip : case report and review of the literature

2007

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a hamartomatous growth that usually affects the kidney. One third of patients with AML present with manifestations of tuberous sclerosis. Oral AML is rare with only 6 cases reported in the English-language literature. In the present case, AML was located in the upper lip of a 43 year-old woman. Clinically, it presented as a firm nodule, well circumscribed and measuring 1x2 cm. It was surgically excised. Histopathological analysis showed a lesion composed of an admixture of smooth muscle cells, blood vessels, and adipose tissue. The immunohistochemical study revealed positivity for vimentin, smooth muscle actin, pan specific muscle actin and desmin. CD68, CD34 and mas…
