Autoimmune pancreatitis is a form of pancreatitis with autoimmune stigmata that may present as either focal or diffuse gland involvement. In focal forms, autoimmune pancreatitis shares demographic, clinical, biochemical and imaging features with pancreatic cancer. Since autoimmune pancreatitis is a benign disease and steroid therapy can rapidly resolve symptoms, improve radiological findings and avoid unnecessary surgery, the current clinical challenge is how to differentiate autoimmune pancreatitis from pancreatic neoplasia. Anaemia is a common pathologic condition, present in almost 5% of the adult population. Iron deficiency is the most common cause; other mechanisms can be involved, making anaemia a multi-factorial disorder in most cases. Anaemia being a frequent manifestation in the diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, patients are often referred to gastroenterologists. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid for the treatment of chronic hepatitis: a multicentre dose-response study
Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) improves the biochemical expression of chronic liver disease. Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) was recently shown to have more favourable metabolic properties. We designed a multicenter, randomized, controlled study, aimed at assessing the efficacy of TUDCA for the treatment of chronic hepatitis. One hundred and fifty-five patients with chronic hepatitis were randomly assigned to receive TUDCA at the daily doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg, or no treatment for 6 months. Aminotransferase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) serum levels decreased with each dose of TUDCA compared with controls (P<0.001). Endoscopic ultrasonography findings in autoimmune pancreatitis
Endoscopic ultrasonography is an established diagnostic tool for pancreatic masses and chronic pancreatitis. In recent years there has been a growing interest in the worldwide medical community in autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP), a form of chronic pancreatitis caused by an autoimmune process. This paper reviews the current available literature about the endoscopic ultrasonographic findings of AIP and the role of this imaging technique in the management of this protean disease.
Endoscopic ultrasonography and portal hypertension: where are we in 2009?
Endoscopic ultrasonography is currently a sensitive diagnostic and therapeutic tool with established indications, but its role in the management of portal hypertension is not well defined. This article briefly reviews indications, technologic improvements, diagnostic and interventional applications of endoscopic ultrasonography in portal hypertension.
