Inhibition of Cor-Ten steel corrosion by “green” extracts of Brassica campestris

2018

Abstract Extract of Brassica campestris was tested as potential corrosion inhibitor for Cor-Ten steel in NaCl and acidic solutions, simulating a marine and an urban-industrial environment, respectively. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed both in absence and in presence of the extract at room temperature. The surface chemical analysis was investigated by X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS), before and after corrosion. Electrochemical results demonstrated that a very small concentration of Brassica campestris extracts can inhibit Cor-Ten corrosion in NaCl solution (inhibition efficiency of 80–84%) better than in acidic solutions. Su…

Minimalism in radiation synthesis of biomedical functional nanogels.

2012

A scalable, single-step, synthetic approach for the manufacture of biocompatible, functionalized micro- and nanogels is presented. In particular, poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone)-grafted-(aminopropyl)methacrylamide microgels and nanogels were generated through e-beam irradiation of PVP aqueous solutions in the presence of a primary amino-group-carrying monomer. Particles with different hydrodynamic diameters and surface charge densities were obtained at the variance of the irradiation conditions. Chemical structure was investigated by different spectroscopic techniques. Fluorescent variants were generated through fluorescein isothiocyanate attachment to the primary amino groups grafted to PVP, to …

Dynamic Role of Gold d-Orbitals during CO Oxidation under Aerobic Conditions

2022

High-energy-resolution fluorescence detection-X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HERFD-XANES) at the Au L3 edge was used to study gold catalysts supported on ceria in order to unravel the role of gold 5d orbital modifications during the activation of molecular oxygen. The variations in the HERFD-XANES resonance peak, which are directly correlated with the d-band occupancy, were monitored in situ during the redox process of the CO oxidation at room temperature under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Interestingly, upon the oxidation treatment and also during the aerobic CO oxidation treatment, the gold d-band fluctuates around an average value, proving that the gold clusters are part…

NANOPARTICLES BASED ON NOVEL AMPHIPHILIC POLYASPARTAMIDE COPOLYMERS

2010

In this article, the synthesis of two amphiphilic polyaspartamide copolymers, useful to obtain polymeric nanoparticles without using surfactants or stabilizing agents, is described. These copolymers were obtained starting from α,β-poly-(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) by following a novel synthetic strategy. In particular, PHEA and its pegylated derivative (PHEA-PEG2000) were functionalized with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) through 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) activation to obtain PHEA–PLA and PHEA-PEG2000–PLA graft copolymers, respectively. These copolymers were properly purified and characterized by 1H-NMR, FT-IR, and Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) analyses, which confirmed that…

An insight into the functionalisation of carbon nanotubes by diazonium chemistry: Towards a controlled decoration

2014

The derivatisation of materials including iron, gold, and carbon by addition of diazonium salts is a reliable process to tune their interfacial interaction with the surrounding media. In this regard, the functionalisation of carbon nanostructures by diazonium chemistry is a versatile strategy to obtain soluble nanomaterials with degrees of functionalisation among the highest ever reported. Starting from these premises we have studied the functionalisation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes by addition of the aryl diazonium salts generated in situ by treatment of 4-methoxyaniline with isopentylnitrite. Following a thorough purification and characterisation protocol (UV-vis, TGA, ATR-IR, cyclic…

Symmetric naphthalenediimidequaterthiophenes for electropolymerized electrochromic thin films

2015

A new symmetric naphthalenediimidequaterthiophene (s-NDI2ODT4) was synthesized and exhibited the capability to electropolymerize alone or with EDOT affording polymers with controlled donor/acceptor monomer ratios. s-NDI2ODT4-EDOT-based copolymers showed low band gaps, wide optical absorption ranges extending to the near IR region, tuned electrical properties, thin-film surface morphology and hydrophilicity as well as high coloration efficiency in electrochromic devices.

A Nanoparticulate Drug-Delivery System for Rivastigmine: Physico-Chemical and in vitro Biological Characterization

2007

The preparation and characterization of surface-PEGylated polymeric nanoparticles are described. These systems were obtained by UV irradiation of PHM and PHM-PEG 2000 as an inverse microemulsion, using an aqueous solution of the PHM/PHM-PEG 2000 copolymer mixture as the internal phase and triacetin saturated with water as the external phase, and characterized by dimensional analysis, zeta-potential measurements and XPS. in vitro biological tests demonstrated their cell compatibility and their ability to escape from phagocytosis. Rivastigmine was encapsulated into the nanoparticle structure and drug-release profiles from loaded samples were investigated in PBS at pH = 7.4 and human plasma.

Density of States characterization of TiO2 films deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition for Heterojunction solar cells

2021

The application of titanium dioxide (TiO2) in the photovoltaic field is gaining traction as this material can be deployed in doping-free heterojunction solar cells with the role of electron selective contact. For modeling-based optimization of such contact, knowledge of the titanium oxide defect density of states is crucial. In this paper, we report a method to extract the defect density through nondestructive optical measures, including the contribution given by small polaron optical transitions. The presence of both related to oxygen-vacancy defects and polarons is supported by the results of optical characterizations and the evaluation of previous observations resulting in a defect band …

In-situ polymerization of polyaniline in radiation functionalized polypropylene films

2015

Abstract In-situ generation of a nanodispersed conductive polymer within a polypropylene matrix has been pursued in order to obtain flexible, conductive films. Radiation grafting of acrylic acid to polypropylene (PP) has been applied to insert carboxyl functionalities on PP. The radiation-grafted films have been further derivatized with a variety of diamines and used as substrates for in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization of polyaniline (PANI). PANI grows as a thin skin from the surface of the film as well as an interpenetrated network in its interiors. Evidence of chemical attachment of PANI to PP has been sought by performing FTIR and XPS analyses after extraction of the unbound polym…

Polycrystalline MoO3 films fabricated by pulsed laser deposition for infrared polarization manipulation

2022

We performed infrared optical characterization of polycrystalline MoO3 films deposited by pulsed laser deposition on fused silica substrates. Several samples have been fabricated using different parameters such as temperature and oxygen pressure. Our analysis shows that under appropriate fabrication conditions it is possible to obtain a dominant α-phase film, with a well-defined, normal to surface (z-axis) orientation. These results are confirmed by reflection spectra performed at 45° incidence angle revealing a strong modulation of the sharp z-phonon Reststrahlen band as a function of the incident field linear polarization.

Recovering bronze metallurgy from archaeological artefacts for the production of reference materials in conservation science

2007

The production of reference Cu-based alloys is the first step of an original experimental protocol to be used in the field of conservation and restoration of metal artefacts. The production of these synthetic alloys has a double value. They can be used both as suitable substitutes of unique archaeological pieces for testing new materials and methods for conservation, and as guidelines for contemporary metal production. We report on a research activity focused on the recovery of the ancient production techniques from the investigation of archaeological copper-based artefacts. The chemical, physical and metallurgical characterization of several Cu-based artefacts, found in different Italian a…
