Solution NMR structure of aD,L-alternating oligonorleucine as a model of ?-helix

beta-Helix structures are of particular interest due to their capacity to form transmembrane channels with different transport properties. However, the relatively large number of beta-helices configurations does not allow a direct conformational analysis of beta-helical oligopeptides. A synthetic alternating D,L-oligopeptide with twelve norleucines (XIIMe) has been used as a model to get insight in the conformational features of beta-helix structures. The spatial configuration of XIIMe in solution has been determined by NMR. An extensive set of distances (nuclear Overhauser effect) and dihedral (J coupling constants) constraints have been included in molecular dynamics calculations. The NMR…

Estudio comparativo de las prótesis no cementadas de cerámica tipo mittelmeier utilizando el sistema adhesivo de fibrina

Fourty cases of Total Hip replacement with the MITTELMEIER's prothesis are reported. In 20 of them a fibrine coating was used in order to improve the biological setting of the acetabulum and femoral components. Ten cases were operated following the original Mittelmeier's technique. The results in both series are very similar, but the authors suggest the valuable use of the fibrine to estimulate the ossification around the prothesis component for a quicker biological fixation.

Lorentzian Comments on Stokes Parameters

The popular Stokes statements about polarized light are interpreted in a Minkowskian language using a Lorentzian representation for the Stokes parameters and the degree of polarization. The evolution equations for Stokes parameters on a curved space-time are obtained using the parallel transport of the polarization vector along a null geodesic. The interest of these equations in Astrophysics and Relativistic Cosmology is outlined.

Vanillin cell sensor

Our project for iGEM 2006 consisted of designing a cellular vanillin biosensor. We used an EnvZ -E. coli strain as a chassis, and constructed two different devices: a sensor and an actuator, assembled using OmpR-P as a standardised mediator. The sensor device contained a computation- ally designed vanillin receptor and a synthetic two-component signal transduction protein (Trz). The receptor protein was based on a ribose-binding protein as scaffold. The Trz was built by fusion of the periplasmic and transmembrane domains of a Trg protein with an EnvZ kinase domain. When the receptor complex binds Trg, an allosteric motion is propagated to the cyto- plasmic EnvZ kinase domain, resulting in a…

GEOLOGIA DE LAS MARGENES DE LA PLACA DEL CARIBE: GENERALIDADES EN GUATEMALA, COSTA RICA, LA ESPAÑOLA Y RESULTADOS PRELIMINARES DEL ANALISIS DE UNA TRANSVERSAL EN LA CORDILLERA DE LA COSTA DE VENEZUELA

The Caribbean Plate margins are constituted by deformed belts built up since the Cretaceous in acompressional and strike-slip stress field, which allowed overthrusting of the Caribbean crust onto the Pacific,North and South American Plates. The Caribbean borders include Jurassic-Cretaceous ophiolitic units (Great Antilles, Venezuela, Costa Rica,Guatemala, etc.), composed by mantle peridotites, gabbros, volcanic and sedimentary covers, which have beendeformed in at least two ductile penetrative phases and were often metamorphosed in the prehnite-pumpelleyite,green and blue schist, amphibolite, and in places eclogite facies. These units may present part of a subductioncomplex or are an accreti…

Minkowskian description of polarized light and polarizers.

A conventional Stokes description of polarized light is considered in a four-dimensional Lorentzian space, developing a seminal idea of Paul Soleillet [Ann. Phys. (Paris) 12, 23 (1929)]. This provides a striking interpretation for the degree of polarization and the Stokes decomposition of light beams. Malus law and reciprocity theorems for polarizers are studied using this Lorentzian formalism.

Aequorin-expressing yeast emits light under electric control

In this study, we show the use of direct external electrical stimulation of a jellyfish luminescent calcium-activated protein, aequorin, expressed in a transgenic yeast strain. Yeast cultures were electrically stimulated through two electrodes coupled to a standard power generator. Even low (1.5. V) electric pulses triggered a rapid light peak and serial light pulses were obtained after electric pulses were applied periodically, suggesting that the system is re-enacted after a short refraction time. These results open up a new scenario, in the very interphase between synthetic biology and cybernetics, in which complex cellular behavior might be subjected to electrical control.

Conformational and structural analysis of the equilibrium between single- and double-strand ?-helix of aD,L-alternating oligonorleucine

Alternating sequences of D and L residues in peptides are directly related to the formation of several kinds of regular helical conformations usually called beta-helices. The major feature of these structures is that they can be associated with the transmembrane ion-conducting channel activity in some natural antibacterial peptides. The study of alternating D,L synthetic peptides is critical to understand how factors such as surrounding media, main chain length, type of side chain and terminal groups, among others, can determine the adoption of a specific kind of beta-helix. Early studies pointed out that the peptides Boc-(D-NLeu-L-NLeu)(6)-D-MeNLe-L-Nl-D-Nl-L-Nl-OMe (Boc: tert-butyloxycarb…

Natural and artificial radioactivity levels in Livingston Island (Antarctic regions).

Radioactive contamination of the sea and land is due, on the one hand, to fallout from atmospheric atomic explosions since 1945, and, on the other, to emissions produced by nuclear and radioactive facilities. Given its geographic position far distant from the aforementioned main sources of radioactive contamination, Antarctica should have the lowest levels that can be measured on the Earth of artificial radionuclides in the various receptor media which are characteristic of the trophic chain. In the case of Antarctica, these are melt-water, sea-water, mosses, algae, and lichens. With the aim of contributing basic information on the radiation levels present in the Antarctic ecosystem, we hav…

Short and medium effects on the environment of Valencia, Spain, of the Chernobyl nuclear plant accident.

As a consequence of the 26 April 1986 accident at the Chernobyl nuclear plant, a large amount of radioactivity was released into the atmosphere. The radioactive plume formed could be detected in practically the whole of the Northern Hemisphere a few days later. The zone most affected by the radioactive cloud over Spain was that of the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands. In this paper, the authors examine the level of the radioactive contamination reached in various receptive media in Valencia, such as air, dry-fallout, water, soil, grass and milk samples collected in Valencia immediately after the accident. The activity levels are compared with those found during 1964 and 1965 due…

Solution structure of aD,L-alternating oligonorleucine as a model of double-stranded antiparallel ?-helix

Conformational characteristics of alternating D,L linear peptides are of particular interest because of their capacity to form transmembrane channels with different transport properties, as some natural antibiotics do. Single- and double-stranded beta-helical structures are common for alternating D,L peptides. The stability of the beta-helix depends on several structural factors, such as the backbone peptide length, type and position of side chains, and nature of terminal groups. The NMR and molecular dynamics solution conformation of a synthetic alternating D,L-oligopeptide with 15 norleucines (XVMe) has been used as a model to get insight in to the conformational features of double-strand…
