Fine tuning of thermoelectric performance in phase-separated half-Heusler compounds

Two successful recipes to enhance the thermoelectric performance, namely carrier concentration optimization and reduction of thermal conductivity, have been combined and applied to the p-type (Ti/Zr/Hf)CoSb1−xSnx system. An intrinsic micrometer-scale phase separation increases the phonon scattering and reduces the lattice thermal conductivity. A substitution of 15% Sb by Sn optimizes the electronic properties. Starting from this, further improvement of the thermoelectric properties has been achieved by a fine tuning of the Ti to Hf ratio. The microstructuring of the samples was studied in detail with high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and element mapping electron microscop…

Weak itinerant ferromagnetism and electronic and crystal structures of alkali-metal iron antimonides: NaFe4Sb12andKFe4Sb12

The synthesis, chemical, structural, and magnetic properties of alkali-metal compounds with filled-skutterudite structure, $\mathrm{Na}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{12}$ and $\mathrm{K}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{12}$, are described. X-ray and neutron diffraction and elemental analysis established the crystal structure without defects and disorder on the cation site. The temperature and pressure dependence of the cubic unit cell of $\mathrm{Na}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{12}$ and the displacement parameter of Na are investigated. The electronic structure is calculated by density functional methods (LMTO, FPLO). Quantum chemical calculations (electron localization function) reveal …

Bacteremia after diagnostic conventional laparoscopy and minilaparoscopy: a prospective study in 100 patients.

Background/Goals: Diagnostic laparoscopy under sedoanalgesia is a valuable tool in the work-up of liver diseases and is helpful as a staging procedure. The rate of bacteremia caused by this procedure is unknown, in particular when performed as minilaparoscopy. Study: A 100 consecutive patients having undergone diagnostic laparoscopy carried out either conventionally (group I, n = 50) or as minilaparoscopy (group II, n - 50) were prospectively enrolled in this study. Blood cultures were drawn before and within 5 minutes after the procedure. Risk factors for bacteremia were evaluated. Results: Bacterial growth occurred in 4 blood cultures drawn immediately after laparoscopy. No patient develo…

Using crystallographic shear to reduce lattice thermal conductivity: high temperature thermoelectric characterization of the spark plasma sintered Magnéli phases WO2.90 and WO2.722.

Engineering of nanoscale structures is a requisite for controlling the electrical and thermal transport in solids, in particular for thermoelectric applications that require a conflicting combination of low thermal conductivity and low electrical resistivity. We report the thermoelectric properties of spark plasma sintered Magnéli phases WO2.90 and WO2.722. The crystallographic shear planes, which are a typical feature of the crystal structures of Magnéli-type metal oxides, lead to a remarkably low thermal conductivity for WO2.90. The figures of merit (ZT = 0.13 at 1100 K for WO2.90 and 0.07 at 1100 K for WO2.722) are relatively high for tungsten-oxygen compounds and metal oxides in general…

Enhanced thermoelectric properties of the n-type Magnéli phase WO2.90: reduced thermal conductivity through microstructure engineering

The thermoelectric properties of the Magneli phase WO2.90 were investigated, with special attention to how the thermoelectric performance can be altered by changing its microstructure. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) allowed the direct preparation of large amounts of consolidated material. Adding Ta2O5 to the reaction mixture lead to the formation of solid solutions W1−xTaxO2.90via a concurrent reaction between WO3 and Ta2O5 during the SPS treatment. In addition, micron-sized inclusions containing tungsten surrounded by WOx embedded in a WO2.90 matrix were formed, which act as additional scattering centers. As a result, the thermal conductivity of the Ta-containing samples was reduced by ≈30% …
