mCLT: an application for collaborative learning on a mobile telephone

Mobile technologies offer new opportunities for distance learning and enable people to collaborate anywhere. This paper introduces an innovative mobile platform for computer-supported collaborative learning in which traditional methodologies of collaboration have been improved, based on 3rd-generation mobile telephones. Students can collect and share live data immediately, anywhere and at any time. This enables them to play an active role in the knowledge-building process. The mCLT is potentially an application for ubiquitous collaborative learning.

A Fuzzy-based Clinical Decision Support System for coeliac disease

Coeliac disease (CD) is a permanent inflammatory disease of the small intestine characterized by the destruction of the mucous membrane of this intestinal tract. Coeliac disease represents the most frequent food intolerance and affects about 1% of the population, but it is severely underdiagnosed. Currently available guidelines require CD-specific serology and atrophic histology in duodenal biopsy samples to diagnose CD in adults. In paediatric CD, but recently in adults also, non-invasive diagnostic strategies have become increasingly popular. Potential of the atmospheric monitoring system of JEM-EUSO mission

The existance of high energy particles with energies >1020 eV in the space is a basic problem in fundermental physics, because it means a violation of the GZK theoretical limitation. JEM-EUSO will try to detect such high energy particles in the space by the oprical fluorescence from the high energy paticles incident to the atmosphere. For caliblation of the optical background an atmospheric monitoring system consisting of a spaceborne lidar with an ultraviolet pulsed laser and an IR camera will be used. A study of the effect of molecular and aerosol conditions in the atmosphere on air fluorescence measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The air fluorescence detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory is designed to perforin calorimetric measurements of extensive air showers created by Cosmic rays of above 10(18) eV. To correct these measurements for the effects introduced by atmospheric fluctuations, the Observatory contains a group Of monitoring instruments to record atmospheric conditions across the detector site, ail area exceeding 3000 km(2). Image segmentation to evaluate islets of langherans

This contribution deals with an unsupervised system to process digital photomicrographs in order to locate and analyze islets of Langherans in human pancreases. The experiment has been conducted on real data and, though we are still going to complete the evaluation of the whole method, we expect to define a set of proper features (e.g. area, perimeter, fractal dimension, shape complexity, texture and entropy) useful for a fast and reliable counting of healthy cells. Measurement of the Depth of Maximum of Extensive Air Showers above 10(18) eV

We describe the measurement of the depth of maximum, Xmax, of the longitudinal development of air showers induced by cosmic rays. Almost four thousand events above 10¹⁸ eV observed by the fluorescence detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory in coincidence with at least one surface detector station are selected for the analysis. The average shower maximum was found to evolve with energy at a rate of (106⁺³⁵₋₂₁) g/cm²/decade below 1018.24 ± 0.05 eV and (24 ± 3) g/cm²/decade above this energy. The measured shower-to-shower fluctuations decrease from about 55 to 26 g/cm². The interpretation of these results in terms of the cosmic ray mass composition is briefly discussed.
