Spectroscopy along flerovium decay chains. II : Fine structure in odd-A289Fl
Fifteen correlated α-decay chains starting from the odd-A superheavy nucleus 289Fl were observed following the fusion-evaporation reaction 48Ca+244Pu. The results call for at least two parallel α-decay sequences starting from at least two different states of 289Fl. This implies that close-lying levels in nuclei along these chains have quite different spin-parity assignments. Further, observed α-electron and α-photon coincidences, as well as the α-decay fine structure along the decay chains, suggest a change in the ground-state spin assignment between 285Cn and 281Ds. Spectroscopic Tools Applied to Flerovium Decay Chains
Abstract An upgraded TASISpec setup, with the addition of a veto DSSD and the new Compex detector-germanium array, has been employed with the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, to study flerovium (element 114) decay chains. The detector upgrades along with development of new analytical techniques have improved the sensitivity of the TASISpec setup for measuring α-photon coincidences. These improvements have been assessed with test reactions. Global lifetime measurements of highly-deformed and other rotational structures in the a ∼135 light rare-earth region: probing the single-particle motion in a rotating potential
It has been possible, using GAMMASPHERE plus Microball,to extract differential lifetime measurements free from common systematic errors for over 15 different nuclei (various isotopes of Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, and Sm) at high spin within a single experiment. This comprehensive study establishes the effective single-particle quadrupole moments in the A~135 light rare-earth region. Detailed comparisons are made with calculations using the self-consistent cranked mean-field theory.
Evidence for isovector neutron-proton pairing from high-spin states inN=Z74Rb
High-spin states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus Rb-74(37)37 were studied using the Ca-40(Ca-40,alphanp) reaction. A previously observed odd-spin T=0 band has been extended to I-pi=(31(+)) and an even-spin T=0 band has been observed for the first time to I-pi=(22(+)); both have a pi(g(9/2))circle timesnu(g(9/2)) structure. A strongly coupled low-spin T=0,K=3 band has been interpreted as being based upon a pi[312]3/2 circle timesnu[312]3/2 configuration. Cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov calculations, which are corrected for the t=1 np-pair field by restoring isospin symmetry, reproduce the observed spectrum. Evidence for Magnetic Rotation in the Light Tin Region
Lifetimes have been measured for three M1 bands in light Sn/Cd nuclei using the DSAM technique. B(M1) values deduced from these measurements show a rapid decrease with increasing spin for a given configuration. The results have been compared with both Tilted axis cranking and semi-empirical model calculations. These suggest that the shears mechanism is present in this mass region, and that the band in 106Sn appears to be the first example of almost pure magnetic rotation.
Evidence for Shears Bands in108Cd
High-spin states were populated in ${}^{108}\mathrm{Cd}$ using the ${}^{96}\mathrm{Zr}{(}^{16}\mathrm{O},4n)$ reaction at a beam energy of 72 MeV. Two magnetic dipole bands have been observed, both of which contain weak $E2$ crossover transitions. Lifetimes for the stronger of the two bands were measured via the Doppler shift attenuation method. Spectroscopic study of228-234Th nuclei using multi-nucleon transfer reactions
Light-actinide nuclei in the octupole deformed region have been populated using multi-nucleon transfer from Th. The energy level schemes of several thorium isotopes with A = 228-234 have been extended up to and negative parity states have been observed for the first time in Th. A systematic study of the difference in alignment between the positive- and negative-parity bands in thorium nuclei in this mass region shows that Th behave like octupole vibrators, in contrast with Th, which are octupole-deformed in character. An intrinsic electric dipole moment has been measured for the first time in Th. The small value obtained is consistent with the vibrational description of this nucleus.
Spectroscopy along flerovium decay chains. III : Details on experiment, analysis, 282Cn, and spontaneous fission branches
Flerovium isotopes (element Z=114) were produced in the fusion-evaporation reactions 48Ca+242,244Pu and studied with an upgraded TASISpec decay station placed in the focal plane of the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany. Twenty-nine flerovium decay chains were identified by means of correlated implantation, α decay, and spontaneous fission events. Data analysis aspects and statistical assessments, primarily based on measured rates of various events, which laid the foundation for the comprehensive spectroscopic information on the flerovium decay chains, are presented in detail. Shears Mechanism in theA∼110Region
Lifetimes of states in a rotational-like $M1$ band in ${}^{110}\mathrm{Cd}$ have been determined through a Doppler-shift attenuation method measurement performed with the Gammasphere array. The deduced $B(M1)$ values, which agree well with the predictions of the tilted axis cranking model, clearly confirm that it has the character of a shears band. Using a semiclassical scheme of the coupling of two long $j$ vectors we deduce information on the strength and form of the effective interaction between the constituent nucleons. These results are the first definitive evidence of the shears mechanism and ``magnetic rotation'' in this mass region.
Spectroscopy of Rn, Ra and Th isotopes using multi-nucleon transfer reactions
Abstract High-spin spectroscopy of Rn, Ra and Th isotopes has been performed. The nuclei have been populated using multi-nucleon transfer reactions involving a 232 Th target and a 136 Xe projectile. This type of reaction offers the only mechanism for populating high-spin states in many of these nuclei. Interleaving bands with opposite parities have been observed to high spin ( ∼28 h ) in 218,220,222 Rn, 222,224,226,228 Ra and 228,230,234 Th. Observation of octupole structures in radon and radium isotopes and their contrasting behavior at high spin
Multinucleon transfer reactions have been used, for the first time, to populate high-spin bands of alternating parity states in {sup 218,220,222}Rn and {sup 222,224,226}Ra. The behavior of the angular momentum alignment with rotational frequency for the Rn isotopes is very different when compared with Ra and Th isotopes with N{approx}134, indicating a transition from octupole vibrational to stable octupole deformation. Throughout the measured spin range the values of {vert_bar}D{sub 0}/Q{sub 0}{vert_bar} remain constant for {sup 222}Ra and {sup 226}Ra and have a very small value for {sup 224}Ra, suggesting that the charge and mass distributions are not affected appreciably by rotations. {co…

A nuclear spectroscopy experiment was conducted to study α-decay chains stemming from isotopes of flerovium (element Z=114). An upgraded TASISpec decay station was placed behind the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany. The fusion-evaporation reactions ^{48}Ca+^{242}Pu and ^{48}Ca+^{244}Pu provided a total of 32 flerovium-candidate decay chains, of which two and eleven were firmly assigned to ^{286}Fl and ^{288}Fl, respectively. Decay and Fission Hindrance of Two- and Four-QuasiparticleKIsomers inRf254
Two isomers decaying by electromagnetic transitions with half-lives of 4.7(1.1) and 247(73) μs have been discovered in the heavy ^{254}Rf nucleus. The observation of the shorter-lived isomer was made possible by a novel application of a digital data acquisition system. The isomers were interpreted as the K^{π}=8^{-}, ν^{2}(7/2^{+}[624],9/2^{-}[734]) two-quasineutron and the K^{π}=16^{+}, 8^{-}ν^{2}(7/2^{+}[624],9/2^{-}[734])⊗8^{-}π^{2}(7/2^{-}[514],9/2^{+}[624]) four-quasiparticle configurations, respectively. Surprisingly, the lifetime of the two-quasiparticle isomer is more than 4 orders of magnitude shorter than what has been observed for analogous isomers in the lighter N=150 isotones. …
