Real metrology by using depth map information

2004

Usually in an image no real information about the scene’s depth (in terms of absolute distance) is available. In this paper, a method that extracts real depth measures is developed. This approach starts considering a region located in the center of the depth map. This region can be positioned, interactively, in any part of the depth map in order to measure the real distance of every object inside the scene. The histogram local maxima of this region are determined. Among these values the biggest, that represents the gray-level of the most considerable object, is chosen. This gray-level is used in an exponential mapping function that converts, using the input camera settings, the depth map gr…

SVG rendering for internet imaging

2006

The SVG (scalable vector graphics) standard allows representing complex graphical scenes by a collection of graphic vectorial-based primitives, offering several advantages with respect to classical raster images such as: scalability, resolution independence, etc. In this paper we present a full comparison between some advanced raster to SVG algorithms: SWaterG, SVGenie, SVGWave and some commercial tools. SWaterG works by a watershed decomposition coupled with some ad-hoc heuristics, SVGenie and SVGWave use a polygonalization based respectively on data dependent and wavelet triangulation. The results obtained by SWaterG, SVGenie and SVGWave are satisfactory both in terms of perceptual measur…

Restoration of out-of-focus images based on circle of confusion estimate

2002

In this paper a new method for a fast out-of-focus blur estimation and restoration is proposed. It is suitable for CFA (Color Filter Array) images acquired by typical CCD/CMOS sensor. The method is based on the analysis of a single image and consists of two steps: 1) out-of-focus blur estimation via Bayer pattern analysis; 2) image restoration. Blur estimation is based on a block-wise edge detection technique. This edge detection is carried out on the green pixels of the CFA sensor image also called Bayer pattern. Once the blur level has been estimated the image is restored through the application of a new inverse filtering technique. This algorithm gives sharp images reducing ringing and c…

Ad-Hoc Segmentation Pipeline for Microarray Image Analysis

2006

Microarray is a new class of biotechnologies able to help biologist researches to extrapolate new knowledge from biological experiments. Image Analysis is devoted to extrapolate, process and visualize image information. For this reason it has found application also in Microarray, where it is a crucial step of this technology (e.g. segmentation). In this paper we describe MISP (Microarray Image Segmentation Pipeline), a new segmentation pipeline for Microarray Image Analysis. The pipeline uses a recent segmentation algorithm based on statistical analysis coupled with K-Means algorithm. The Spot masks produced by MISP are used to determinate spots information and quality measures. A software …

Depth Map Generation by Image Classification

2004

This paper presents a novel and fully automatic technique to estimate depth information from a single input image. The proposed method is based on a new image classification technique able to classify digital images (also in Bayer pattern format) as indoor, outdoor with geometric elements or outdoor without geometric elements. Using the information collected in the classification step a suitable depth map is estimated. The proposed technique is fully unsupervised and is able to generate depth map from a single view of the scene, requiring low computational resources.

Digital Mosaic Frameworks - an overview

2007

Art often provides valuable hints for technological innovations especially in the field of Image Processing and Computer Graphics. In this paper we survey in a unified framework several methods to transform raster input images into good quality mosaics. For each of the major different approaches in literature the paper reports a short description and a discussion of the most relevant issues. To complete the survey comparisons among the different techniques both in terms of visual quality and computational complexity are provided.

A novel technique for opus vermiculatum mosaic rendering

2006

In this paper we present a method to generate a digital mosaic starting from a raster input image. Mosaics generation of artistic quality is challenging. The basic elements, the tiles, typically small polygons, must be packed tightly, emphasizing orientations chosen by the artist. An adhoc boundaries detection have to be performed according to the directional guidelines. Different mosaic styles can be automatically rendered, depending on artistic techniques considered (“opus musivum”, “opus vermiculatum”, etc.). The proposed method is able to reproduce the colors of the original image emphasizing relevant boundaries by placing tiles along their direction. The boundaries detection is based o…

Adaptive Techniques for Microarray Image Analysis with Related Quality Assessment

2007

We propose novel techniques for microarray image analysis. In particular, we describe an overall pipeline able to solve the most common problems of microarray image analysis. We pro- pose the microarray image rotation algorithm (MIRA) and the statis- tical gridding pipeline (SGRIP) as two advanced modules devoted to restoring the original microarray grid orientation and to detecting, the correct geometrical information about each spot of input mi- croarray, respectively. Both solutions work by making use of statis- tical observations, obtaining adaptive and reliable information about each spot property. They improve the performance of the microarray image segmentation pipeline (MISP) we rec…

A Novel Artificial Mosaic Generation Technique Driven by Local Gradient Analysis

2008

Art often provides valuable hints for technological innovations especially in the field of Image Processing and Computer Graphics. In this paper we present a novel method to generate an artificial mosaic starting from a raster input image. This approach, based on Gradient Vector Flow computation and some smart heuristics, permit us to follow the most important edges maintaining at the same time high frequency details. Several examples and comparisons with other recent mosaic generation approaches show the effectiveness of our technique.

Statistical Modeling of Huffman Tables Coding

2005

An innovative algorithm for automatic generation of Huffman coding tables for semantic classes of digital images is presented. Collecting statistics over a large dataset of corresponding images, we generated Huffman tables for three images classes: landscape, portrait and document. Comparisons between the new tables and the JPEG standard coding tables, using also different quality settings, have shown the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in terms of final bit size (e.g. compression ratio).
