Can Western mobility solutions apply to East Asia's cities ?
2009
International audience; Cities around the world are experiencing traffic congestion and test different solutions to insure adequate mobility for their inhabitants while at the same time taking into consideration the relatively new concern for sustainable development. Several Western countries, such as France and the United States, have seen a resurgence of streetcars/tramways as a way of enhancing mobility at a lower environmental cost in central parts of their cities. Many European towns have embraced the concept of bike sharing. Reflections on the urban environment have led to transit-oriented-development schemes. This presentation considers the relevance of such schemes in Asian cities c…

The airport as edge city : the case of Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport
2005
International audience; Most of the recent research about airports has considered them in their role as points within airline networks, and the focus has been generally on hub airports. But airports are also places offering many similarities with cities, particularly with edge cities. They are places of human diversity and job centers for surrounding areas. Traffic jams are common on ground facilities as they are on taxiways, runways and airways. Often divided in specialized districts, such as cargo warehousing, hotel rows, rental car parking lots or office clusters, they are also urban organisms exerting strong demands on the local environment. In the post 9-11era, their importance for econ…

High-speed rail in China and its territorial impact
2011
International audience; China has started a massive development of high-speed rail projects, as part of a stimulus package, to ease congestion on tracks and in the air, and to limit emission of greenhouse gases. It will affect the geography of China and on its cities. Experiences gathered in France by researchers of the " TGV effect " are put forward as questions to foster research on the changes induced by high-speed rail. A " shrinking of China " has begun. The 505 km Zhengzhou to Xi'an line has cut the travel time between these two cities from 6 to 2 hours. The 1069 km Wuguang line has slashed from 10,5 hours to 3 the travel time between Wuhan and Guangzhou. By making it easier to move p…

New spaces of walkability in Asian cities
2014
International audience; Not long ago, the streets of Asian cities (South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia) were mostly used by pedestrians and cyclists. But in recent years, they have experienced in recent years a huge growth in the number of vehicles plying their streets: nowadays it has even become hazardous to try to cross these streets, and in some cases pedestrian sidewalks have been invaded by parked vehicles (cars and motorbikes), in addition to commercial activities. The walking experience is unpleasant and unhealthy. What have been the adaptations to the conflict between motorized mobility and non-motorized ways to get around the city ? After reviewing some of the difficulties encou…
Spaces of transit intermodality in Manila, Philippines
2013
International audience; Public transportation in the Philippines' capital Manila takes different forms : elevated subway (LRT and MRT systems) and ground transportation (provincial and local buses, jeepneys, trisikel and pedicabs, taxis). This presentation, based on field work in February, April and December 2012, will examine the characteristics of transfer/connecting areas between different modes of transportation (such as LRT to jeepneys, LRT to MRT, ...) in several locations of the Manila metropolitan area, in order to determine some of the problems making transfer difficult, but also the commercial activity generated by heavy pedestrian and passenger traffic in and around the transit c…
Les espaces du tourisme et des loisirs
2017

Introduction - La Bourgogne - Dynamiques spatiales et environnement
2008
Extra...

Solving congestion in cities : policies and contradictions
2009
International audience; Most cities in the world are now facing traffic gridlock. Local governements and transportation authorities are trying to tame a phenomenon which takes in fact very different forms depending on the level of social and economic development. Is it really possible to compare freeway gridlock in Los Angeles with rickshaw gridlock in Dhaka, Bangladesh ? When French cities embrace the development of urban bicycling, Chinese cities limit the use of bicycles. Using cases of cities in different parts of world, this presentation willl try to find some common trends in urban mobility policies and examine some contradictory developments.
From PLU to Eco-PLU : strategies for a sustainable city in Dijon, France
2010
International audience; Capital city of the region of Burgundy, Dijon, like many French cities, has now embarked into a strategy of ecodevelopment, putting sustainability in the center the public discourse of urban planning. City planning is run by the Communauté d'agglomération Dijonnaise, " Grand Dijon ", with competencies in transportation, housing and land use planning. According to French laws, a greater emphasis must now be given to " solidarity " in the governance of urban areas, which implies requirements for social housing in all municipalities, but also to sustainability and " green " urban policies. The PLU " Plans Locaux d'Urbanisme " must become " eco-PLU ", reflecting the incr…

Philippines ports and airports in Asian transportation networks
2013
International audience; Favorably located half-way between Singapore and Japan, not far from Hong Kong or Taiwan, the Philippines appear as as a weaker participant in the vitality of trade and transportation in this part of the world. Maritime ports' output and international aviation passenger traffic reveal weaknesses in the overall transportation system of this archipelagic country. Runway limitations to the number of flights at Manila airport, as well as the growing importance of inter-island flights have constrained the availability of slots for international flights, even if some linkages between Asian cities and Cebu can provide some relief. This is why the former Air base at Clark- P…
Etalement urbain et politiques anti-sprawl à Denver, Colorado
2007
