Daytime sensible heat flux estimation over heterogeneous surfaces using multitemporal land‐surface temperature observations
Equations based on surface renewal (SR) analysis to estimate the sensible heat flux (H) require as input the mean ramp amplitude and period observed in the ramp‐like pattern of the air temperature measured at high frequency. A SR‐based method to estimate sensible heat flux (HSR‐LST) requiring only low‐frequency measurements of the air temperature, horizontal mean wind speed, and land‐surface temperature as input was derived and tested under unstable conditions over a heterogeneous canopy (olive grove). HSR‐LST assumes that the mean ramp amplitude can be inferred from the difference between land‐surface temperature and mean air temperature through a linear relationship and that the ramp freq…

International Symposium on Greener Cities for More Efficient Ecosystem Services in a Climate Changing World
The idea of garden is expressed, for the first time in history, by the Mesopotamian civilization as early as the IV millennium BCE as drawings and poetry texts showing a wall fencing one single tree. This is the first representation of the idea of sheltering/protecting a tree by human artifacts and, in its simplest form, brings the idea of the tight relationship between horticulture and urban environment. The "jardinu" of Pantelleria, a drystone wall shaped into an open-top tower encircling a single citrus tree, fully matches both in its founding idea and its physical implementation the elemental idea of the Mesopotamian garden. Such traditional growing system, developed in Pantelleria to c…
Shelf-life of mozzarella cheese samples packaged without liquid and stored at different temperatures
The effect of different temperatures on the shelf-life of Mozzarella cheese was studied. pH, non-protein nitrogen, moisture, total proteins, methyl esters of combined fatty acids, Total Viable Count, lactic acid bacteria, enterococci, Micrococcaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, psychrotrophic bacteria, Pseudomonas, yeasts and moulds were evaluated during 9 days of storage at 4 degrees, 7 degrees and 13 degrees C. Samples stored at 4 degrees and 7 degrees C showed insignificant variations in the chemical parameters and acceptable increases of the microbial groups. Samples stored at 13 degrees C exhibited a greater increase in the microbial number and higher non-protein nitrogen.
Probiotics, prebiotics and symbiotics in inflammatory bowel diseases: state-of-the-art and new insights
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) consists of two distinct clinical forms, ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), with unknown aetiology, which nevertheless are considered to share almost identical pathophysiological backgrounds. Up to date, a full coherent mechanistic explanation for IBD is still lacking, but people start to realize that the pathogenesis of IBD involves four fundamental components: the environment, gut microbiota, the immune system and the genome. As a consequence, IBD development might be due to an altered immune response and a disrupted mechanism of host tolerance to the non-pathogenic resident microbiota, leading to an elevated inflammatory response. Consideri…

Colesterolo e rischio cardiovascolare: Percorso diagnostico-terapeutico in Italia
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease still represents the leading cause of death in western countries. A wealth of scientific evidence demonstrates that increased blood cholesterol levels have a major impact on the outbreak and progression of atherosclerotic plaques. Moreover, several cholesterol-lowering pharmacological agents, including statins and ezetimibe, have proven effective in improving clinical outcomes. This document is focused on the clinical management of hypercholesterolemia and has been conceived by 16 Italian medical associations with the support of the Italian National Institute of Health. The authors have considered with particular attention the role of hypercholesterole…
The essay examines the rights that the art. 230-ter c.c. assigned to unmarried partner, which devotes permanently his work in the company of the other cohabitant. It aims to identify reason why the legislator recognizes only to the cohabitant of fa…
FOCAL ACTIVE COLITIS AS A PREDICTOR OF INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE: RESULTS FROM A SINGLE-CENTER EXPERIENCE.
The term focal active colitis (FAC) is conventionally used to describe the presence of isolated cryptitis, characterized by an inflammatory infiltrate consisting of intraepithelial neutrophils and/or neutrophils invading the lumen of the criptae, with no other microscopic alteration of the colonic mucosa and, in particular, without the presence of signs of chronic inflammation. To date, only four studies, including one conducted in a pediatric population, have been performed to evaluate the clinical significance of this disease. The aim of this retrospective study on prospectively-collected data is to evaluate the clinical implications of the focal active colitis, since there still remains …

Italian cancer figures, report 2014: Prevalence and cure of cancer in Italy
This Report intends to estimate the total number of people still alive in 2010 after cancer diagnosis in Italy, regardless of the time since diagnosis, and to project these estimates to 2015. This study is also aimed to estimate the number of already cured cancer patients, whose mortality rates have become undistinguishable from that of the general population of the same age and sex.The study took advantage of the information from the AIRTUM database, which included 29 Cancer Registries (covering 21 million people, 35% of the Italian population). A total of 1,624,533 cancer cases diagnosed between 1976 and 2009 contributed to the study. For each registry, the observed prevalence was calcula…

Nutrition, malnutrition and dietary interventions in inflammatory bowel disease
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which includes both Crohn's disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC), is a chronic idiopathic inflammatory disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Diet, as a source of luminal antigens, is thought to be an important factor in the pathogenesis of IBD. often the nutritional status of patients is significantly compromised, particularly in CD. several factors, including drug-nutrient interactions, disease location, symptoms, and dietary restriction can lead to protein energy malnutrition and specific nutritional deficiencies. solid evidence regarding the accountability of certain dietary components in the etiology of IBD are lacking. With regard to malnu…

Scientific and Technical Contributions from Research Projects
The main goal of this project is to demonstrate the advantages of sensor integration on a remotely controlled robotic platform for increasing operator safety and improving the classification of explosive targets. This is accomplished by combining the imaging provided by radars and an optoelectronic sensor, a time-of-flight (ToF) depth camera. An additional aim is to demonstrate the operability and practicality of the system in a field with landmine simulants having plastic cases.
Colorectal cancer in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a single-center experience
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). The aim of the study is to evaluate the prevalence of CRC in a cohort of Caucasian patients with T2DM and the association with other variables previously known to be related with increased risk of CRC. We retrospectively evaluated the data of 741 consecutive Caucasian patients with T2DM who underwent colonoscopic screening in our tertiary referral center. A control cohort of 333 patients with thyroid disease was selected to evaluate the difference in the incidence of CRC. At a median follow-up of 132.5 months (range 33.3-175.7), 67 cases of cancer (prevalence 9%) occurred; among these, 14 cases …
Pouchitis: A tridimensional view
The preferred surgical treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is represented by proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA). However, patients with UYC who have undergone IPAA are prone to develop several complications, which include surgery related/mecchanical complications; inflammatory or infectious disoreders; dysplasia or neoplasia; and systemic or metabolic disorders. Pouchitis, which is defined as the acute and/or chronic inflammation of the ileal reservoir, represent the most common long-term adverese sequela after IPAA. Gut microbiota play a pivotal role in the initiation and disease progression of pouchitis. Pouchitis can be clas…
Risk of surgical site infections following hip and knee arthroplasty: Results of the ischia-gisio study
