Marginal Notes of a Translation The aim of this paper is to present some relevant themes of Language Policy and Planning in the People’s Republic of China focusing on two key terms: fangyan (often translated as ‘dialects’) and ‘language harmony’ (yuyan hexie ). Both of them do not belong to the western linguistic tradi- tion and are therefore of particular interest. The paper examines official texts from the last ten years.

In 2018, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China proposed the establishment of the Xin Wenke, the so-called ‘New Humanities Disciplines’, emphasizing interdisciplinary interaction, improvement of teaching, and integration between education and technology. Before the Xin Wenke reform, some Chinese universities had already practiced interdisciplinary integration, but these individual attempts still needed further improvement. In the context of the Xin Wenke reform and the Belt and Road Initiative, the importance of teaching Italian in China is becoming increasingly prominent.
